I was on a coach for 8hours with 2 overweight people, one sitting beside me (she gets the window side) and the other sitting in front of me.
Oh man, I was the one who was sweating a lot because I was making a lot of effort to stay in one place -- I was almost sitting on the edge of the seat with my legs crammed against me by the overweight guy in front of me.
Oh man! Still gives me nightmare! That was a terrible journey -- the girl who was sitting beside me managed to sleep... bloody cheeky.
I for one am not too bothered about other people because I tend to be cool about many things (I am relaxed and laidback guy) but I do understand the points raised here.
There are some obese people with some kind of genetics problems so cutting down on fatty food etc. does not really help. These people needs specilised help. However there are others who only have a simple "illness": complusive eating. If you don't have willpower and the food is controlling you, then you are not in control of your life.
I remember a true story two or so years ago: an obese guy in US went to the doc complaining of bad stomach ache. The doctor prescribed some tablets but he came back saying that the tablets do not work so he was taken to the hospital for X-ray. The doc did find something strange in his stomach.... it was a remote control. Somehow it went into between the flabs of the fat.
Gross but true. Sad fact. Let's get these legs up and running! :D
I think it is a great idea, and also one of the funniest things I have ever heard. I can imagine it now, an attendant at the airport saying "I am sorry mam, but you are going to have to purchase another ticket" while thinking to himself "haha! your too fat to sit in one seat so I am going to make you pay for 2!"
at least that is what I would be thinking.
The galleries and museums choose what they want and it shouldn't matter if they like you or not. The problem is everyone is wasting their time for special interest groups or minorities trying to be "politically correct." If I don't want to hire someone or include a person that is fat or is of a different race [or whatever], I should have that choice.Quote:

i took a 14 hour flight from dallas, tx, to hawaii... next to an obese person. let me tell u it was NOT a comfortable flight at all, for 14 hours!! i cant use the armrests, so i just sit there... hands to my side being still. it was the worst flight id ever taken and I wouldve paid for the other persons extra ticket had i the money.
there's should be a special sit for special prize for a disabled and big passenger

buy first class tickets. all the room you'll need.

All of Southwest's flights offer coach-sized seating. Business and first-class seats do not exist. And the "people of size" policy only applies to full flights where a larger person would not have access to an empty seat.

Airplanes have a VERY strict limit to the maximum weight they can be, and the airlines (cargo and passenger) do their best to come as close to that as possible, for maximum efficiency. If a passenger plane is designed for a capacity of say 300 people...is that 300 people who weigh 150lbs, or 300 people that weigh 300lbs? Thats a difference of 45,000 lbs if your math isn't so good, and makes a huge difference in terms of the loading of an aircraft.
I think the policy (on a fully booked flight) makes sense. The last 7 times I've flown myself, I've heard the announcement of the flight being full or even overbooked, so this should be a common scenario, and if this policy is in place for my safety, then hell no am I gonna disagree with it.

you're forgetting that there's no other alternatives for the rest of us poor people who can't afford 1st class... we're not expecting any special treatment or anything like that, if a flight is not gonna be comfortable, we can accept that but at least make it reasonably tolerable...
in other words... we're saying we deserve more for what we paid for... besides... that's how services are improved, by paying attention to complaints :D
if the complaint is something that can not be immediately be done - last I checked, there is no shrink ray - then what good does it do?
btw... travel tip. 10-15 minutes before boarding, see if you can upgrade to 1st class. You can surprise yourself with doing it without a charge sometimes. You better be charming though!
Well, belonging to their frequent flyer mile club is another help too ;)

last time i check, there's a lot of substitutes for shrinkray such as treadmill, stairmaster etc etc or more effectively charging 2 seats to people who as a matter of fact ARE larger than a single seat can contain.
think of it like this... small/average size guy sit next to an obese one... due to the excess of mass, the obese person is spilling over to the next seats. now that's not fair coz that means the smaller person is paying for the extra space that the fat person is taking...

as much as i think the policy sounds fair at first-glance, i feel it isn't fair considering the following. yes, it is true that over 50% of the American population is now overweight (by definition over 30 bmi). the definition of morbidly obese, however, is over 40 bmi. i don't think most people start infringing on the other seat until they're in this latter category, which is a very small minority of the obese population. there is a large percentage of people in the morbidly obese category who have genetic disorders (such as familial hypercholesterolemia, a-beta lipoproteinemia, etc.). now the airlines hires workers to take care of its handicap consumers (bringing them from one gate to the next, often on expensive carts). why shouldn't they do the same for people who have serious medical conditions like hypercholesterolemia? these unfortunate folks often start getting heart attacks by the age of 25, surely we can cut them some slack on the airline seat issue, when it's not they're fault in the first place. just my 2 cents.

pheck, according to that, I'm overweight as well. But not obese. However... guess what, I still think that it's fair. Sorta like having a yard. You pay for your property. If you go over - say like a fire - you pay for the damages beyond your property line.
Anyway, back to the shrink ray/first class comments... obese people - and overweight people as well - lose weight. complainers? buy first class if you can't take it. Want an immediate solution? Invent a shrinking ray... then shrink the people down to fit. Otherwise... blah, blah, blah.
All talk, no solution. I stick with my initial words... seems fair to me.

just to clarify one small point, being obese (in medical terms) is the same thing as overweight. morbidly obese is another thing.
and i certainly can appreciate your (and others') point about you get what you pay for. i just think there should be some lee-way or compassion for those less fortunate.

i know it! i was shocked to find out how little it takes to be considered "obese." a lot of my classmates who work out at the gym (weights) are considered obese by the medical definition. i certainly wouldn't call them obese. scrawny runners like myself wouldn't mind being that kind of "obese." :)
