how many pixles per inch do you use RipX?
huh? I dunno! If your talking about the scanning, I would say until the image is clear at 1x - Did say earlier, I actually used a crummy webcam to take my picture cos I don't have a scanner set up!!! (I have about 50 old computers and can't find the scanners mains adapter amongst the million wires) :D - I'm suree I'll search it out pretty soon!
RipX
no when you create a new file it asks you how many pixles/inch. what do you use?
i really didnt read the guidelines....but i made a character!

This is why, NO ONE SHOULD MESS WITH ED MACK! :yarr:
lol. I think I'll do some of this.
this isnt a competition entry (because it blatantly flaunts the rules!) but i thought id post it anyway, i was thinking of possible platformer characters, and experimenting new styles (heh, if you can call your second sprite experimenting with new styles!!), anyway, a game sprite would be much smaller, but this was just concept really! anywho, its a weird blue bear thingy!

comments and criticism welcome!

its groovy! lol, like my SMB Bear! (click my sig)
Looks very 3D, which is cool...
Which program do u make your sprites in?
mbenney, your bear is very well done, and yes it looks 3D. anyway, it's more a character for a fighting no? a la clayfighter ^^
thats not a stance that could be used in the game, just trying to get a characterQuote:

Love this thread! Shame I've been missing out on it so much!
The most pixel stuff I do is limited to cars and buildings:
http://www.razormedia.co.uk/~markp/screeng.gif
If anyone here would like to make a pixel building, make sure its in proportion to the new game, any tile size and any colours. Just make it look as though it fits in with the above image :)
If its good enough I'll use it in the final game and you/your site will be credited.
Thanks! :)

update your game mark!!! and stop spending all ur time in the lounge - next time i see you there u get a bare bottom spanking
games is the place to be
Very nice work guys , does every one find the height and width restrictions to be fine ? I have totally redone my character in embarasment towards how good everyone is and ill post him later today. BTW why hasnt anyone done a female character yet :P Do Female versions of your ninja's
Ok you guys have about 2 days to have your character submited and ready for the next stage in the Pixel WAR!
You can have a maximum of 2 characters to be submitted but you must select your best one and upload the image to the thread.
And to those of you who are interested in joining the war start pixeling now :)

well its not related to the contest, but i think ill post it anyway.
this is a sprite from a game i am currently making. i couldnt decide whever to do the graphics in vector or bitmap. in the end i went with vector.

Hey watermelon isnt that that japanese bear thing ? Its a cute bear that attacks ppl , like a big craze in japan
Bleh, what programs are you using to make these pixel dealies? If its Photoshop, which tool does pixel work?! Im confizled. And im on a mac...
i use photoshop. You can use any pixel program really even ms-paint if you really wanted to. You just have to use the pencil tool and draw it. The most advisable thing to do would be to create a rough idea of what you want to draw on the lower layer and then each time you redo the character you can use a new layer and trace bits you want to keep. Another reason i use photoshop is i can open 2 windows of the same image , zoom one in to full scale and leave the other at its normal scale. So i can view the progress of each stroke.
heres a character i've been working on, pretty sucky, but its one of my first complex pixel drawings
:doughnut:
whats the problem? the tut said to go find photos!

I just thought about something too when I looked at the light source on mbennys sprite, that I hadn't said about. You should make the light source come from a position central to your character! The reason for this is that when you flip your sprite using the _xwidth = -100, the light source shouldn't appear to move. if you've highlighted the left hand side, when the sprite flip the light will then be on the right hand side! This will look very strange in your game!
My sprite is not a great example of this, as I said earlier it only took me about 35/40 minutes!!!

Eh, heh, this is the exact reason why I don't do pixel people:

Can I enter my Domokun insted? ==> :domo:

It is a ninja right... :p
I am just letting people know, that there is going to be a big hold on my project as I'm doing something to improve it, but this time i'm keeping it a secret! Since everyone seems to be jumping on anything I put on this board these days. Not that that's a problem but I start putting on some pixel art and this thread and many other pixel threads appear, I start working on tile engines over a year ago, and now look - before that I was working on one of the first rotational isometric engines, (my name was either arcadenetwork/garypaluk/something), this board ever saw and it was an open source project and a load of people started pushing for certain things in it and I got demorolised and jacked it in. Then a load of iso games appeared. I'm glad that when I get an idea I inspire people to get involved but people here just seem to jump on the bandwagon. If I was to make a terrain engine tommorow, 100 people would want to make one! Why? Just me saying that will make 20 people try!
I decided to make a full scrolling tile game, the next day there were 4/5! Hmmmm - I don't want to be *****y but can't help feeling that when people are copying your work or bettering you on your ideas that It takes away from your original work, and it doesn't look impressive any more. I was actually banned from this forum twice for putting a couple of comments to people and even after being a user of this forum for about 2.5 years it seems that many influential people who keep this board alive from the beginning have been baned. This forum is too full of people who suck up to each other because they don't want to be dragged into an argument.
terrain engine
the sims (2d/iso game)
wipeout (one demo I did that didn't get coppied, WOW)
3d space ship using drawing api (like starfox/starwing)
Look there's some of the next generation ideas!! Why? cos if i'd put them on later they would be!! :) I just thought of them in 2 minutes! Now everyone else go and do the same and then guess what, you have an original idea!
I'm bored of zelda, gta, tile engines, isometric engines. I'm going to come back in a few months with some stuff that's gonna blow you away! I'm not saying that this board hasn't inspired me to do some stuff cos it has, but I always push the boundries.
RipX
I totally agree with you RipX thats a reason i never release my games on flashKit :) But when you done with this mindblowing stuff you gotta show me :) Keep up the great work ripX
lol, Yes it's a ninja! :DQuote:

Rip X, just remember that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, your inspiring people man! :)
I'm gonna start a monster pixel war, with monsters not people! and I know Ed Mack wonn't mind me putting it in the games forum because I idplise his scripting skills and youth :D ;)
Yeah, that's why I want to inspire people to be original!
why not a flash utility, tile based, that let you create your own music with configurable sounds loops, external mp3.swf to load, percussions sounds to arrange?
like in a tile based map editor, but with sounds as a result ^^
