It appears to be hitting land VERY soon...
And hitting hard too. The guy on the weather channel was all angry, and he started yelling about how people should get to higher ground. And he said things like "I'm serious about this" and "I'm not joking around here".
What a strange man.
i can't remember where you live virgs, but this IS serious bidness...
i didn't realize this until i moved down here.
that weather guy getting pissed is justified - people just don't listen to them.
if you are asked to evacuate, it's not a precaution - you need to do it!
there are going to be a lot of people down there having a very scary evening.
hopefully vamps will be OK, but i'll be surprised if we here from him again before tomorrow.
Serious bidness, indeed. Killed 4 on its way here.Quote:

Hunker down there, Vamps. (why is everyone saying honker?...)
i keep saying it because the weather channel guys say it constantly.Quote:

i've watched plenty of hurricane coverage of the years, and it always cracks me up.
there aren't many other situations where that phrase gets used.
i just wish this storm was in the middle of the week.
i could be missing work, but instead i get a washed out weekend.
oh, wait, did you mean honker versus hunker?
Yes. I've always said 'hunker'; not sure what the official version is... off to google (which has a cool Greek themed image up now)
*edit*
3 definitions for 'hunker' (to sit on ones heels), none for honker.
now that i've said it to myself a few times, it is hunker.
when else would one use the phrase 'hunker down'?
i might want to hunker down in my foxhole during the tet offensive.
i might want to hunker down in my airplane seat when there's turbulance.
that's all i got...
[Q] From W Walker: “When Hurricane Floyd was threatening the American east coast, every weatherman seemed to use the phrase hunker down. Do you have any idea where this word and phrase came from?”
[A] It sounds like the most typically American of phrases, but it seems originally to have been Scots, first recorded in the eighteenth century. Nobody seems to know exactly what its origin is, though it has been suggested it’s linked to the Old Norse huka, to squat; that would make it a close cousin of the modern Dutch huiken and German hocken, meaning to squat or crouch, which makes sense. That’s certainly what’s meant by the word in American English, in phrases like hunker down or on your hunkers. The Oxford English Dictionary has a fine description of how to hunker: “squat, with the haunches, knees, and ankles acutely bent, so as to bring the hams near the heels, and throw the whole weight upon the fore part of the feet”. The advantage of this position is that you’re not only crouched close to the ground, so presenting a small target for whatever the universe chooses to throw at you, but you’re also ready to move at a moment’s notice. Hunker down has also taken on the sense of to hide, hide out, or take shelter, whatever position you choose to do it in. This was a south-western US dialect form that was popularised by President Johnson in the mid 1960s. Despite its Scots ancestry, hunker is rare in standard British English.
*golf clap*
Thank you, Professor LittleCar.
;)
So, if you Brits don't hunker down, what exactly do you do?
I've always equated hunker with bunker... meaning to sorta dig in.
the brits? they probably use something proper, like shelter or something like hutch up.
I think they just keep a stiff upper lip, none of this sorted hunkering or haunching.
well the hurricane looks like it jsut turned and is making landfall just south of us.. we are looking at possible cat 1 02 force windes and tornados.. most the damage is being done to the south of us.. still gonna be messy here over the night
You know, coming from anyone else but you, I wouldn't have read that the way I read that. =^_^=Quote:

Glad to see you are still there; keep hunkering or honkering, which ever you do best. :)
I understand it is serious. But the weather guy screaming and yelling isn't going to help anything. If anything, he should be keeping his cool. Even though he was in the direct path of the hurricane...
Why would I not think this is serious business?
sorry, man. didn't mean to go all 'dad' on ya.Quote:

"If Jim Cantore is around, get the fark out of town."
well, we got a great sunset - sort of the beauty before the storm:
http://www.gloriosis.com/images/sunset_preCharley.jpg
some of the weather crews are at folley beach, one of our barrier islands.
looks like charley might come to charleston afterall.
my mom just got slammed in cocoa beach, florida.
she's a yankee, and this was her first time.
she said, "well, i'm never going to do that again".
hurricane shutters jumping, sideways rain and trees, but she's still got power.
hope you're OK vamps!
Looks like alot of people died last night. At least thats what they say.
How are do you expect a trailer home to hold upto a tree coming at it 100+mph.
we are getting it right now - it's pretty strong at times.
if i can, i'll post video later - but i don't think you can see the sideways rain....

Well over here we decided to opt for our bad weather to be spread out evenly through the year, rather than all at once on rare occasions, so we don't really have the problems of hurricanes.
Though if we did we would probly 'hunker down old chap' :)
well the aftermath was worth then the storm we got some exit bands from the storm that flodded are neighbor hood and produced some great downpours..
here's another in the tropics..wonder where this one is really gonna go
