Ifritt: Multi-Purpose Pod 1st
Thanks to everyone who voted for me. I honestly didn't expect anyone to vote for my ships after I've seen all the great entries. :)
---
3rd place:
Dominicaninja...
"Red Fighter"
Also a very detailed and cool looking fighter. I like the colors.
2nd place:
McLelun...
(no name given)
So clean and so simple. Great entry. I was debating wether to give this one 1st place or Ifritt's ship. I picked Ifritt's as first because it's just a little more detailed.
1st place:
Ifritt...
"Multipurpose Utili-Pod"
This is a really original entry. I really like it. Exellent example of pixel art
Honorable Mention:
EgoAnt...
"Crimson Mercury SE-C"
This ship looks fast and cool. I like it. It also looks like it belongs in a retro pixel game.
---
I really like Slight's ships but I didn't vote for them because I don't consider them pixel art.
According to wiki and other pixel artists, they're not:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pixel_art
He's an amazing artist but, I'm sorry, his ships are just not pixel art.
"Devourer Class Heavy Fighter" is also more than 100x100 pixels along with some other submited ships.
Adi4X's "Greenpower 709" & "DeathShipX" aren't even close to pixel art. He did a lot better with his latter entires.
Sorry to be a party pooper but I needed to point these things out.
Many of the ships are great so congrats to all!
It was a bit diff. to choose but here u have my top 3
1) Slight: "Scorpion Class Fighter" >>> BEST GRAPHICS (pixel Art?)
2) PRadvan: "Enemy Heavy Assault Fighter" >>> BEST DETAILS
3) Ifritt..."Parabolade 3030" >>>
1st Slight, ship a - well liked all of hes ships very nicely drawn
2nd Tonypa, torpedo 2 - very original like the colours :)
3rd McLelun, no name given - very simpel and clean
Congratualtions and a BIG thank you to all who entered. Now we have such a great resource for people's games in the future. Nice work from everyone, and I hope you all had fun. It was a great learning source for me...
(I can't believe some people actually voted for my ships!...Cheers  !)

So, congratulations to Slight. The winner of the first pixel art comp. Here's your prize, (should you choose to display it not, its up to you!...Whoever wins the next one, the avatar gets passed on to!)...
http://board.flashkit.com/board/
You get to choose the next 'topic' for Pixel Art Game Sprite Comp 2...A few suggestions, (heroes, cars, buildings...)
(Maybe someone can add this as a sticky topic for future reference, so it doesn't get lost in the boards???)
Hey,
I'd first like to congratulate to the winners :) Good work..
Even though I agree that Slight get's a first place, I don't think he should get a second place aswell. I think it's quite unfair for the other people competing. We could make a little rule that you can post more than one entries, and that people can vote for all of your entries, but that they can only vote for one entry per person (and that will offcourse be what they think is his best). Just to keep things fair. So you'll actualy be voting per person instead of per entry. This will still give people who submit more a bigger chance, because you'll always have more chance that people will like your stuff.
About the entries; it might be a good idea if everyone kept posting his entries in 1 post to keep things neat and well-sorted. This is also so that voters won't have to search the whole thread for ships of that person. Not trying to be *****ing here ;) Just trying to keep the competition as fun as possible :)
~Sph
I agree. Either all the votes for one persons ships should be added togeather, or people vote for a persons ships as a group (so entering a bad ship as well as a good one would have lowered your chances). At the moment, sombody could just enter 10 really good ships, and get 1st to 10th place :p.
Congrats to the winners, and everyone else too :)
Ali
Yup, great...good ideas.
Everyone keep them in mind for the next comp...
How about then that anyone who enters, gets one post in the thread. Then they can edit their post, with however many entries they want!...Obviously editing can last up until the last day of the comp, before voting starts.
Enjoyed that comp so much, looking forward to entering in the next one...Maybe we should shorten it even more? (10 days of designing, 4 days of voting???)
Wowzers!
Thanks and congrats to pointguard and everyone who participated for making a great and fun competition, not to mention the cool, free resource we've made for others to use.
I agree that there should be maybe a different scoring system, and also I wont wear the badge of honor because there is some question as to whether or not my entries were really "pixel art".
For the next comp, to continue the theme (and to pick something I suck at ;) ) my suggestion is "explosions" These could be animated, or not... What do you think?
Yes, I think people lost interest in it as the time went by.Quote:

Special thanks to pointguard for creating the competition, good job :)
Congrats everyone. I may actually try in the next comp...depending on what the subject is. :)
I will enter the next one too probably, im not great at pixel art though, vector is my strength (vector comp anyone ;))
Ali
Sooooooooooo! Slight! What'll be the next subject? And when will the new competion start/end?

For the whole explosion idea, I would think the explosions would have to be animated, still explosion shots are no fun. :)
Congrats again all!
As pixel art theme? You mean drawing a picture of explosion? I am sorry, but I dont think its good idea. Maybe I just dont understand it.Quote:

Wow! Congrats to everyone! I can't beleive my ships both came in the top 15 out of 45. That's awesome. I also did a quick 3D flyby of the Alka Gavel... Not really a pixel art sort of thing to do, but I couldn't resist.
Alka Gavel Fly-By
That's awesome! Nice work.Quote:

Yea, or planets/ asteroids / comets, space buildings (that could be interesting, space stations, resturants, swimming pools :p), or we could change theme and do anything else... animals, trees, tea pots...
Ali
Yeah:Quote:

i know this is extremely off topic, but, hey, dig my space duel thingy!
i know, it's as buggy as a wagon (get it?), but i might go somewhere with this engine.
peace :smoov:
ps. lets make ships that are supposed to be heavily armored and with asteroids in the back!
I'm all pixeled out for now, but it would be nice to see some heroes or pilots for these ships in the next competition. Thanks to all who voted for my ships, all your comments really meant a lot to me :')
I'd like to see underwater craft/submarines, robots, tanks or mechs in the next contest.
Also I would like to suggest a size guide for the next contest. What that I mean by that is this; let's say for size comparison, a human would be 3 pixels tall or 5 pixel, or 10. That way our ships or whatever can be more or less the same proportions. What do you think?
Changing the theme completely, (as we have the basics for a shoot em up game with the ships!)...
How about we target Zelda style games?
What about the next topic being based on characters you'd find in zelda style / gauntlet style games, (ie) warriors, barbarians, princesses, wizards, knights, goblins, demons, dragons, etc...
This topic could be endless with the type of character you could create. Obviously we could place some sort of restriction again on size of the pixel sprite, but think of the possibilities...???
What do you think?
This sounds like a great idea as well...However, would that restrict people on where they can use the sprites in their game? By this I mean, people would obviously be designing sprites to work well underwater...Quote:

We could have someone make a shape (or a few?) and then have everyone colour it, give it pants, weapons, a job, etc. Another thing that made the site more interesting, was that the user had to make some palette, so they can't just go crazy with the brush and anti alise tools.
Edit: Found it :D http://www.pixeljoint.com/wee/
As you can see on the site, the shape they use on their site is very simple and small. We might could take it on a bit higher level by making the shape a tad bigger and and some more detail. The turorial shows exactly what it's all about..
sounding good...
kinda like the idea we can all design different characters...endless possiblities...!
What would people prefer...?
A) a normal pixel art game sprite comp, (similar to the one just run!)
B) using Saphua's idea of a pre-defined "shape(s)", for the characters bodies?
If we were to use idea B, if someone were to be kind enough to make a really cool starting set of shapes, (ie: face forward, a series of running shapes)...???
Or, we leave it up to everyone's own devices, andsee what amazing sprites people can come up with?
What do you think?
Idea A is much better !
My english-writing still really bad so i can't explain why I think so, something about personnal creation and imagination maybe?
idea B is cool. everyone can spend less time and come up with more design
Idea B! i can enter then without having to be good at pixel art! Would be fun to see how wacky people could make their characters while sticking to the shape.
Ali
just when i started to like pixel art... now you dont want more pixel art
Idea A
I like both but leaning towards idea A with a little bit of idea B (predefined color palette)
