The people here, and all the mods and admins don't, they really give so much to keep this community alive, and that's what keeps me here, but as a whole "designer forum" they [jupitermedia] do give a very wrong image.

they're a company that makes money from people visiting their sites that offer information. sorta like a huge google ad type of company... but with more intrusive looking ads. they make their money, they must be doing decent enough to have a lot of websites.
Hell. It worked for the creator of Flashkit who sold it to them. He created it, they wanted it, he sold it for a lot of mf'n money. Now there's a service that could make you money. Dunno. Perhaps I see it a lot more cut and dry than any of you.

It was suggested that we should be more respectful of JupiterMedia. I hope nothing I've said is seen as disrespectful. Honestly, I'm trying to be constructive. I see the site as something of an equal partnership between the mods/users and JupiterMedia. Unless Im missing something, they are making money from the ads while people come here for what other people do for them, not because its a stellar product in terms of a website. In fact, there are 30,000+ other forums people could go to and start using for community purposes and there is a growing number of flash support options as well. So, I think they owe some respect to the users as well. Im sure they have some sort of plan or system in place to keep it worthwhile for them and we do benefit from and am thankful for that.
Just my 10 cents, I think everyone, them included, would stand to gain if they invested more in improving the site here rather than branching off of it with something like FlashFoundry. For instance, since its FlashKit, the site should (and could) be in flash. I just believe that more business options would open up if more attention were given to the site itself to make it into something you cant get anywhere else. I think the concept of selling components would work better if it were mixed in with the free stuff like Macromedia Exchange so that browsers are more apt to scan across a product they are already looking for and be tempted to buy it.
That was far more constructive than a cartoon about someone you don't know ever would have been. :)
I'm not saying we should all bow down and worship JupiterMedia for letting you hang out here, just that someone has to pay the bills for all the bandwidth and server space. Personally I don't mind if JupiterMedia wants to make a few bucks. Don't we all? It doesn't cost you or me one penny to come here and do our thing.
No. I agree. I don't begrudge any business wanting to make a profit. Just that they arent paying the bills out of their personal pockets but out a budget that is accomplished in part by users free participation. Im just guessing, but Im pretty sure that JupiterMedia does recognize that also. I just think they would do well for themselves to articulate that through re-investing into the site vs. making the branch off that Foundry is. Just my 10 cents though. Maybe it will prove me wrong.
There was a discussion a while ago that raise some controversy: Flickr makes money from ads next to users' photos. Users create content so the ads get displayed. So, people started saying they should get paid by flickr, because if they didn't upload their photos, there would be no flickr.
That's a stupid idea, but has a valid point: users provide the content, without it, there would be no community to pay bills for. If there weren't so many users coming here, they wouldn't be making money with the ads. So it's a circle: they depend on us users us we do on them to keep flashkit up.
The people here, again, are great. They make flashkit nice. Mods and admins are great, and do a lot for the community. Eventhough you mods don't get paid (do you?). I don't think jupitermedia is barelly making money, if flashkit isn't rentable, they wouldn't maintain it. Simple.
But people stay in this ghetto because there's no other resource like this. And by resource I talk about the people of this community, not the website itself.
You can't deny that flashkit, just in code, could be improved a lot to save bandwith and improve the site. This page (edit post)(i don't know if all pages have the same issue) have the html tag twice. Just by fixing that, i guess you make the page smaller, and with the amount of bandwith fk uses, they can reduce that.....just by removing a tag, and there's so much they could do. The new header uses tables (nothing against that), but couldn't they be a little more progressive and try css? and flashkit foundry is HTML 4, and done with tables and font tags....for a new site, couldn't they make a better design? the even got a forum to post job offers. I bet even flashkid could have made something better.
Yes, we should respect the company that provides a free service, and I'm sure there's a lot work behind fk (starting with Planet). But shouldn't they care about the COMMUNITY, besides just to see where they can place more ads?. If it weren't for the people that don't work for jupitermedia, but do work for flashkit (mods, I'm talking about you), and all the helpful users, the community wouldn't be what it is.
Just tell me, when was the last time Jupitermedia gather resources to invite flashkit users to battle another community? When was the last time Jupitermedia promoted a flashkit official calendar? Aren't those iniciatives of flashkit's users, right?
I'm not asking much, but you know they can do much more from the community, which would benefit us and them, and maybe I'm wrong, but that's the way I see things (I'm entitled to my opinion right?) in the end, flashkit is just one more of the many websites it owns, why should they care?
If I say they suck, I give arguments. I think they suck, and I'm saying why. And I'm not saying this because I'd like to see a better flashkit. I'd just like to see a flashkit as good as it was a few years ago. I think the quality of this site and it's forum has decreased a lot over the years. If jupitermedia isn't able to improve, at least they could keep fk's quality, no?

In all honesty, Flash Foundry was created from the concept of trying to serve the Flash Kit community, as a way for the many world class Flash artists and designers that participate here and make this community what it is. And it is just that, a community that’s circular.
Flash Kit wasn’t built over night, nor will Flash Foundry so please bear with the folks who are trying to make this happen and just like Flash Kit… Flash Foundry too will be what you folks make it.

Yep, you're right that it's the people who come here on a daily basis that make Flash Kit what it is. And no, while there is a perk or two that comes along with being a mod none of the mods get paid any kind of wage. :)
And you make an excellent point about flickr and their ilk. Have you ever read the user agreements on any of those 'free' image hosting sites that are so very popular these days? Maybe other people aren't concerned about all the personal information required for registration being farmed out to whoever is willing to pay for it, but it's not something I'm willing to commit to just for some free server space.
Should JupiterMedia care more about Flash Kit and it's members? I'm sure it would make a difference if they were to take a more active role in taking Flash Kit in a positive direction. You could probably say the same about the other 150 web sites that they operate, though. About Jupiter
If you want to make Flash Kit a better place, then provide meaningful feedback in the forum set up for that very purpose. The admin does actually read and respond to comments placed there. If enough people want something to happen then I don't see why it wouldn't be considered. And look at that...Planet popped in here while I was writing this. :)

according to the flash foundry home page you can pay a one off fee and
have access to unlimited downloads.
so for $9.95 you could download everything.
you do the maths.
I could be wrong but I dont think there is much of a market for animations at all. However, I think people might pay for components and packages of classes. There are zillions of people who know how to animate the things they want to in flash but they get stuck when it comes to programming gadgets and interactive pieces and I believe would be happy to buy a skinnable component instead of figuring it out.Quote:

Well, personally, what keeps me away from it it's its design and presentation. Looks very unprofessional to me. A template from templatemonster looks way better than it.
And the presentation is important, it's the image of your company. Why didn't you do something like this? http://www.advanceflash.com/ disregard it's all flash, or the small fonts or whatever you don't like about that site, but it looks way more professional anyway. And see how they don't need to put their previews as animated gifs??????
