I agree with everything said above... great work!
The water line and those tentacles look amazing! Were those from stock?

Here comes the second. Ct, if I'm letting you down with these, let me know.
I think this is better than the first one.

Comments/Crits always welcome!
Good luck on the next one Chris. We've got a good pace going.
Very nice davulf, I actually would have prefered it without the eyes, perhaps without the box at all.
Without those things, it's pretty much just layered stock with some levels, some clipping masks, some masking, some brushing.Quote:

Thanks for the comments though :).
criticism - take cover!
Overall it looks very sloppy to me...the blending/lighting at the base of the grass is not in agreement with the top of the soil layer. The grass itself is a poor quality stock, very 'jpeg compression'ish'. It looks to me as if you were going for a speed record cutting out that box...have a little more patience and you'll get a much better result. And the eyes definately don't do the image any credit...They're just goofy looking, and neutralize any 'creepy' effect you may or may not have been going for.
I have seen some pretty nice stuff from you recently, which is why I'm trying to be so thorough and specific, I don't mean to shoot you down, just to give you something to think about next time.
Thanks for the comments Ond. I'll try to respond as best as I can. I didn't even notice about the lighting of the grass and the top of the soil, although I can see what you mean. I have a 'lighting' layer where I brushed in order to make it look like the edge of a wall or something. The grass itself was from sxc.hu and was a rather high resolution image. I did scale it down in order to fit it, but I'm surprised it kept the compression. As for the box, the black around it is actually on a different layer and is brushed in to try to give it depth. I guess you're right about it looking a little off.
As for the eyes, I originally thought they were a good idea, but now that everyone is mentioning it, they have lost their appeal. I probably should have just left it without. I suppose I tend to feel that unless there is really obvious things done to an image that I will be called out for not doing anything.
It's a compliment to hear you say that you've seen some nice stuff from me. I really have been trying lately. I've been at this for about 6 months, and I'm glad I can see some progession (check out www.briancomeau.net for my images in chronological order).
Anyways, I'm glad for the comments. Thanks man.

And thanks!
Re the blur, it was supposed to be depth of feild, but also I blurred a few areas to try and recreate a 'water on the lens' sort of feel. Might have done a better job, but I'm still fairly happy with it.
Might have to slow things down for a bit, going out today and have England vs Australia rugby match this evening. But as soon as possible :)Quote:

Sounds good Chris.
Here Ond, this is for you. I messed with the lighting, and re-did the grass, I also fixed the outline on the box. What do you think now?

D: that looked so good right up until the dirt started showing...
clever consept, but I have to agree with most of the other crits here.

And before I 'cracked' the image here:
http://www.ctranter.co.uk/flashkit/b...liff/hand4.jpg
Yeah wasn't sure which I prefered, so as it's my battle and I make the rules I am posting both. :p:
You choose which one you want to use.
Wow Ct, just wow.
oooh i like that a lot
unusual style.
i definitely prefer the uncracked one- appreciate the details more. if you wanted it cracked, maybe finer cracks would work- i find the cracks in the first one too in your face, and that subtracts from the rest of the image.
my only slight criticism would be that the highlight of the apple looks a little too bright i think.
[edit] although looking at it again, it does fit in with the lighting on the fingers, so maybe i am wrong......
i love the non-cracked version. Awesome CT, just awesome!
That is so good its scary.
Prefer the uncracked version.
Awesome CT!!!! Perfer the none cracked though.
DaVulf, I have to agree with what O said. The second version looks much better. Keep up the good work you 2.
im going against he grain and go with the cracked version, i think broken into pieces makes you look at it a little harder... and that means it will keep peoples attention and all art the object is to keep people looking and make them think about it....
it also helps hide the little inperfections, makes the blending of the hand into the roots a little better, the fingers also look better on the cracked version they stand out alot less.
also the dirty brush work on the diffrent shards is very well done.
Agreed. It looked like a stock. :)Quote:

Nice image CT. I'm going to have to go and say that I prefer the uncracked version as well. I think it is a personal preference thing, but at leats from my point of view it will be easier to manip than the cracked version. As far as the image itself goes, it looks like you hand painted it. I don't know where you find your stock man, but that looks ace. The hand and the apple seem as if they were one image. The way you blended the sky looks really nice as well.
Side note question: Can you draw freehand?
I'll start work after work ;).
Thanks everyone?
DaVulf - you mean... like with a pencil? :p
Yea, or a wacom. Like, can you just grab ink (or marker, or pencil, or brush, or pastel etc.) and just draw. That image looks hand painted to me is all. Or did you use stock and just brush it to look like that?Quote:

lol. Maybe I ruined it for you D by stepping up for this one. Could have been them two instead of Ct and I.Quote:

I haven't actually tried the 'digital painting' technique, though I do have a wacom at home. It's just stocks though :)

Ond, if C says yes, will you battle him?
I will personally be willing to donate money to purchase a prize for the winner.
Sure I will :)
Oh wow, geez man. im only able to view your last piece today, and it blew my mind, ct. i prefer non-cracked version.

No problem, take as much time as you need.
I would love to battle ct, but I'm pretty much without a pc to use regularly...I'm posting this from work. In the past two weeks, the total time I've been on a pc besides at work is like 1 hour.
I won't be a good opponent until I can get my grubby hands on a private pc for at least an hour a day...

I just can't force the juice to come man. This is going to have to wait a little while if I'm going to do anything worthwhile. It is Father's day tommorow, but I'm heading to Dallas for work in the morning. As such, Father's day has been moved to today, so I don't have enough time to devote to this. I've been busy working all week so I didn't get started until Thursday. I worked a few hours on a volley, and though it looked like trash. I scratched it and did another idea. I loved the stock, but I botched the image. Then I got another idea and started working on that. It is about 40% complete, but not enough to post here.
Totally your call whether you'd like to end it, or give me the time to finish. Either way, this was a great battle and an excellent learning experience. Thanks alot Chris.
just finish your volley you turd! ;)

I hope that is up to par with you man. This was volley 'e' I could post the other ones a little later. A lot of concepts before I got to this one. I hope you all like it.
DaVulf, i really like this image!
great color, very detailed and nice high res stocks...
the bg has a very orange feel/color to it, i kinda feel like the flower/butterfly should be tinted a bit more than they are (looks like the center of the flower is perfect though)
one of your best imho
