for photo manipulation I use photoshop but for basic contrast and colour 'correction', such as the building above, i use irfanview which is a free image viewer.

It's a great tool and I'd recommend it to anyone, it allows you to browse through all images in a directory or view thumbnails and you can do resizing, optimisation and simple effects (colour ranging, brightness and contrast). It's much better at optimising than PS.

and I just play with the settings to find what I think is right rather than having a standard.

aversion: i use irfanview as well but just to scroll images, and i would reccomend acdsee 5.
cause it sorts everything nicely and loads pics faster then anything else.

Hehe, cool pics aversion. I wish I knew how to get that much color to the sky. In my pics the sky is always a really dull blue or grey.

Ian & Aria --> I wish there was snow like that in Colorado.

I must say that I enjoy traditional black and white photography more than digital. Digital is really easy and convient, but there is an edge to B&W that I like. Maybe it is just the darkroom or something, but I enjoy all the cool things you can do with darkroom equipment. I have not posted any of my B&W's because I am no longer in a photography class, but that will change this upcoming slemester.

i unfortunately, am still using kmart developing :p

i have been looking around here for places to get access to and learn to use a darkroom, but unfortunately i havent found one yet.

yeah , I'm going back to college in 2003 (part-time)which means I will have access to a darkroom among other things and that--> i really need !

there's so much more to developing and printing your own photos - not to mention all the processes and different types of paper you can experiment with.

Hey this is a great thread. I have a question for you photo experts that I am sure has been asked a million times already. I am looking at getting a digital camera. What would you recommend for a first timer. I have money, but not too much. I was looking at getting a Canon Powershot S30/S40. Thoughts? There are so many picturesque shots in and around my apartment in Arlington, VA and I would love to start posting them in this thread. Once again, great thread. :)

polarising filter for the most part and push up the contrast a little :)

There was a big fire near my house last night and I managed to take some pics near to the fire becuase I have some friends who work with the firedepartment.

there even was a chance that the fire would cross the road and hit our houses. luckely this didn't happen!

the pics are a bit blurry sometimes but that is because of all the people bumping into me and everything else..

This was also in Jersey as was the sunset, but this was in a German WWII undreground hospital.

It looks quite spooky but its like that because we had no tripod at the time and it results in camara shake, but I think it has quite an effect on the picture.

canon G1 (digital) and a canon EOS. Of those images above, first two there are analogue, last two digital. I use a polarising filter a lot, it brings out the colours in the sky.
