Maybe you ought to try another browser instead, like Mozilla or Opera. Mozilla has undergone much development lately, and it much faster than it used to be, plus it's standards compliant.
Personally, I use Opera 6 and it's awesome. You can have all your browser windows open in the same window (sort of like old versions of Word or UltraEdit). When you exit and start again, all the windows you had opened pop back up, so you can leave anytime and go back where you were. It has an ICQ client, an e-mail client and a news reader. It's faster than both Mozilla and IE too. Try it, it's only like 3 Mb, highly recommended. http://www.opera.com
Just bouncing around some ideas ;)

Thanks, i'll give opera a try. Is it better than Netscape/mozilla or any other browser in your opinion? Does it support most things IE supports? (or better--what doesn't it support?) Thanks.

For some reason, Opera loads the images, but I have to right click and press show image to see them
Why is that?

Play around in the settings, should be there somewhere.

Windows ME????
I have no idea why it done this but have a look....
>Because i had so many problem's with my Dell computer,
I needed to reinstall Windows ME. But the strange thing
was that it over wrote IE6 and put IE5 back on. So i am
sticking with IE5. I dont advise that you reinstall "ME"
on top of "ME" unless you really need too.
>The only other way to unistall IE6 is if you you have
Nortan Clean sweep. and do unistall wizard and click
IE6 somewhere on your start menu.

I am also on ME, i will only reinstall that as a last resort.
I have Norton Utilities...I have something called Wipe-Info..is that what you mean?

If you have Windows 95-2000 SP 1 you can Use IEradicate to kill IE 6 http://www.98lite.net and then go up to MS website and grab IE 5.X or 4.X if you want. IEradicate leaves 2 files on your machine so that your machine will still work.
Before you kill IE you may want to grab a smaller web browser so that you can download and browse while reloading IE. I use K-meleon http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/ its only 3 megs to download and is pretty resource lite and based on Mozilla code so it makes a good browser to check pages for mozilla/netscape.
In terms of functionality NS is actually ahead of MSIE- They have fully working PNG suport, better CSS support than MSIE, and MNG support and if you download actual netscape it comes with a Built in Translator, Web Composer, mail Client, Chat Client, WEb 2 Phone, WinAMP, and some other junk that you will never use but is tossed into NS becuase of some deal or another with their partners.

Johnie--
thanks, i might try that. Is the IEradicate safe though? I have the Norton Clean Sweep, would that work? If so, how do i use it?
If it won't work, i'll try the IEradicate:)
i just went to the 98lite site--it says the program is for IE 4/5 and win98...will it work on IE6 with ME?
-
IEradicate is completly safe although it may muck up your preview settings from your folders if you have them set and thus you would have to reset them.
-
alright, i'm trying it now--if it doesn't work....i know where you live johnie;)

Make sure you have an alt browser first.
IEradicat removes IE and if you don't have another browser getting another copy of IE may be problematic.

This is what you need.

No, Is is on Norton Cleansweep and on one of the
things you can do is "uninstall wizard". when you
click that you need to find the icon on your windows
start menu. After you found IE6 and uninstalled it, then
put IE5 or IE 5.5 back on.
But only do the reinstall of ME as a last resort. Because
it may cause more problems then before.

Good thing to know about ME
***************************
This is what happend with Dell.
I found out that most of the problem's on my
computer were caused by windows ME. But most
of the problems are caused by third party ME,
such as "dell" "Packard bell" and so on. Now
that I put a NEW "windows ME" on my system, all
the problems have been fixed. BUT it may uninstall
IE 6 and put 5 or 5.5 on and delete your Macromedia
flash player but u can always reinstall them.
I also advise that you dont install ME over ME too.
You should only ever reinstall the system software
if there is a major problem on your system, Mine
was USB drivers. So only install ME if it is the
last option you have.

Hockyfan this may be your problem.
Enable Java
If you're running an older version of Windows, something
else is causing Java to fail. First, you should check to
see if Java has been disabled. In IE, go to the Tools >
Internet Options menu, click the Security tab, and select
the Internet zone. Now click the Custom Level button, which
brings up another dialog box. Scroll down the list until
you see Microsoft VM. Under that item, you'll see Java
Permissions, which lists a number of options. Make sure the
Disable Java option is not selected; we prefer the High
Safety option instead.

As far as the image loading problem goes, it may be because of your image options are wrong. Try pressing g, it'll toggle between no graphics, all graphics and show only cached images. That may solve your problem.
Also try F12 for the quick preferences dialog, check if everything's OK.
As for your other questions, from a strict standards-compliance point, Mozilla is slightly better than Opera, which itself is largely better than IE6, and I won't even bother going into IE5. Opera and Mozilla have way better support for CSS2, things like sub-selectors and other neat things. Javascript support is great in IE6 and in Mozilla, passable in Opera, but enough to get you though pop-ups and rollovers and all that, which is like 95% of all javascript on the web anyway.
For plugins, Opera recently (in version 6) added LiveConnect support, which makes it on par with Mozilla. IE has ActiveX which can be downloaded automatically, which is way better for Aunt Alice-type users. Since most Mozilla and Opera users are power-users, it doesn't really make any difference at the end of the day.
For e-mail, Opera's composer is text only, while Outlook and Mozilla's composer support HTML e-mail. Personnally, I find text e-mail way better, since it saves design-impaired people from their own stupidity ( can anyone say: red MS Comic size 20 text on a black background? ). Opera and Outlook support multiple accounts for e-mail, dunno about Mozilla.
In any event, all can READ HTML e-mail. Outlook has been known, however, to have a small (*cough* huge *cough*) amount of security problems.
Speed-wise, Opera beats *any* other browser out there. IE is a close second, while Mozilla is laughably slow. All three are pretty stable. Size-wise, Opera is the smallest, followed by Mozilla, and IE is dead last.
In the end, I would choose Opera for speed and the multiple document interface, Mozilla for standards-compliance. The only reason I would choose IE is because basically every web designer in the world designs for it.

pmineault--
thank you very much...here is what i've concluded though.
I've finally managed to get rid of IE6, and am now using IE5, i still have the same errors. I've tried Netscape 6.1 (or 6.2, whichever is the newest, i forget) as well as Opera. I was impressed with Opera's speed, but to my distress, Opera and Netscape both had these same javascript errors. Which leads me to believe, that the problem resides in my OS, or something related to that, as mentioned in an above post.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to go about fixing this, (like if you had the same problem) please let me know.
Thanks:)
-
Well, if it's an OS problem, the only real way to get rid of it is, sorry to say, format c:.
Maybe you ought to try something different than Windows ME. Windows 98SE works pretty well. I recently installed Win2000 and I can honestly say that it is absolutely awesome. Super stable, extremely fast.
If you don't want to lose your docs and they're on the c: drive, then you can try Partition Magic which will allow you to create a resize your old partition nd create a new one. Then trasfer all your docs to the new partition, and format c:. This way you can still have all your docs intact and do a clean install of your OS. Don't forget to backup your e-mail too.
I don't recommend at all installing Windows ME over your current version, it's always a bad idea. What you need is a fresh start.
If you think that's an overly drastic solution, you can always download AdAware (try zdnet or download.com). It's a program designed to find and remove so-called spyware programs. Some of them, like OnFlow, stay in memory all the time behind your back and cause weird errors for no apparent reason.
But really, there's nothing better than a fresh start.
-
Yeah, right now, I am considering a format. And i've used 2000 a bunch, and it works like a charm. I've heard pretty good things about XP pro too. But i don't own either, so whichever i would get i would have to buy, so i want to get the better one.
I'm going to try and get some more help, but if not, i'm going to get the new OS. I just have a lot on this one now, so it will take some time to back up. I also have AdAware, and i use it quite frequently, but i'll do another check.
Thanks again:)
