The fuel from the shuttle is toxic. Why its a Federal crime to touch it I could not tell you.Quote:
NASA are saying do NOT touch any debris you might come across, they say it could be deadly, I wonder why that is. Radiation? Chemicals?
Because every piece could potentially be a clue to what happened.Quote:

I fail to see what is wrong with that. :confused:Quote:

I watched it burn as it came down I doubt that anything that is left would be of much help. CBS or was it NBC had a a former Astronaut on. He mentioned the importnce of the hydrolic system data going done. That system is used in controling the craft as it descends.Quote:

I fail to see why there is any flag waving going on. IT wasn't only Amreicans in the flight. There was the Israeli, who's name fails me right now.
But it went to the INTERNATIONAL space station.
Oh, and NASA has confirmed it was a break-up, and that it wasn't a terroritst act (like we didn;t know)
What a sadness I feel right now... :(
Well I don't think we need to argue about this...I guess the point is that these people represented their individual countries..
I expect that Israel is doing some flag waving themselves.
Ilan Ramon was his name.Quote:

did you report it? I'm sure they'll take it down, they usually do with stuff like this.
it was taken down, what was it?
Although it's easy to say that the Stars and Stripes is the American flag, and the shuttle is an American development, so we'll mourn bravely under the US flag, it seems to me that this is a particularly narrow-minded viewpoint.Quote:

There's more than America going on here.
I don't think it matters how small the bits are, one screw could tell them what happened. They'll want to gather every part they can and, as in plane crashes, create a reconstruction of the craft. I assume there's black boxes to be found as well.
It's worth noting that it was gliding as it came in, engines are not used in shuttle landings and there is minimal fuel on board, it's dumped when they know they're coming in. So whatever happened probably had nothing to do with an explosion, more likely to be a structural problem related to stress/metal fatigue etc. The pattern of debris, that it was close together as it fell, also suggests that it broke up without an explosion.

just clearing up some of the facts:
according to nasa.gov:
alt: 203,000
speed: 12,500mph (Mach 18)
Columbia did not visit the International Space Station. In fact, it was the first pure research shuttle since the ISS was started
It is a federal offense to remove the debris because it is property of the U.S. Government.
Some moron in Germany had posted an EBAY auction for a piece from the fallen shuttle.Quote:

while I don't see why anyone needs to mourn under a flag I don't see what's wrong with americans mourning under an american flag, what else do you want them to do, display the flag of the european union??Quote:

it's not a narrow viewpoint, it's an american viewpoint, a country well known for turning to their flag for support in times of difficulty. What's wrong with that? You're the only one I can see claiming this for america, it seems to be your narrow viewpoint if anyones....

Yeah...and I understand that this even has more gravity with Israel..and to them, this was making history..this represented their desire for normalcy.Quote:

I think we can honor these men with a little good ol' fashioned flag waving without alienatinga and excluding though. ;)

I'm of the opinion that jumping under one flag or the other is akin to taking sides. I don't think this is an appropriate moment to assert nationalism or take sides, rather it is a time for sad introspection on a personal level.Quote:

And actually, I don't care that it is specifically the American flag. I would be of the same opinion what ever the color of the rag unfurled.
I'm the most open minded and anyone who wants to question me can say hello to Mr. 45.
Bring it on!:D
Well clif, I see you're bucking the trend - I assumed you be more of a .22 kind of guy.Quote:
