It's based aboard a space ship which has been over run by droids ( For all the retro kids out there think Paradroid and Alien Breed ). I'm hoping to put some mission based stuff in there but still allow complete freedom of movement ( The first 3 decks are in place at the moment, some of the levels are going to be huge ).
It's still really early days ( Hence no alpha for you guys to play with yet ) but the first version of the baddie AI is in place ( Different droids are going to react differently, so the battle droids will go wading in, maintaince droids will just potter around as cannon fodder etc. ), the line of sight routines ( You can see droids open doors but can't actually see the droid itself ( Pure Paradroid )), the lift routines are 90% done.
I dunno what else to say really, I'm using token3's scroller engine 'cause it just blows mine away, I'm using hitTest for the player-2-background collision so you can get really close to objects ('cause the collision detection is not tile based you can get within a pixel of a hittable object ) and I've got quite a nice run length encoding routine for the maps so the file size won't be too silly.
Oh, you're going to need at least 900mhz under the hood to play it.

I use a seperate collision map ( The baddies use simple and quick tile based collision, it's only the player sprite which uses hitTest ) and the los routine uses the data from that (ie each baddie looks towards the players postion. If there is a hitable tile in the way then I set it's visible property to false).
I'm not using los for baddie AI ( Like a crude path finder ) but rather to make them disappear when you can't see them directly. Sounds weird I know, but it means when you enter a room you won't know if there is a baddie ( Or eight ) waiting for you.
In saying that I'm going to have to improve the accuracy on it. Where I've got this funky hitTest thing going on I can have an object on the floor any size ( The tiles are 32x32 ) anywhere within a tile. I set the attribute for that tile as hitable so the baddies can't just walk over it, but the whole tile is then treated as a solid wall in as far as the los routine is concerned, which means a baddie will be able to hide behind an object which is smaller than itself.

Hey squize, that game sounds great.. a bit like one ive had before called Cyberdogs - just err with droids. Anyway, id like to know what you mean by:

My current game will be using LARGE arrays, does the above statement mean you shrink them?? Im not sure, please explain.

Thanks for the good words. I've really tried not to hype it up too much 'cause that seems to happen a lot and then the game either sucks or never sees the light of day. I'm trying not to fall into that trap ( Says the boy who posted a screenshot ;) ).
Run length encoding is the easiest form of data compression I know of and works a treat in Flash.
Basically you count any repetitions in your map array and just store that with a count.
Make a seperate fla which just reads through your map data array. If the next tile is different from the current one then just store it as normal. If it's the same then put an identifier into your array ( I use "R" ), the actual tile number and then count up how many times that tile repeats and then store it. Once you've gone all the way through the map use trace and save it out as normal.
In your decrunch routine ( Which will be in your actual game swf ) you copy the crunched map data into a new array. When it comes across the identifier ( "R" ) it knows the the next tile has to be copied the number of times in the count value.
For example...
Normal Map data:
1,0,0,0,0,2,2,0,0,0,0
Crunched Map data:
1,"R",0,4,"R",2,2,"R",0,4
There are certain situations where you can lose ( If you look at tile "2" because it's only repeated twice you are actually increasing the map size ) but you can put checks in for that, and depending on your map you should get a really good saving. Mario is a great example with all that sky on the first level and the ground running along the bottom.
There are loads of ways to further increase the compression, by looking at patterns within your map data etc. but you've got to keep in mind the decrunch speed ( In Ionic you can go between levels via a lift so I need to decrunch the data as quickly as possible ).

Well, ive just created a compression algorithm similair to the one you said and managed to get the size of my map down from 30Kb to 5Kb - which can only be a good thing! Ive just got to make the one for turning it back into a readable array now...

3d game looks really nice fospher, when do you think it will be finished. I know it probably wont be soon but its nice to have something to look forward to.
