why wouldn't he say it was faster if it was actually faster.?
there are a number of things that could prevent this one being that the player is still constrained by the browser. which is why he would say "you can do things while the gpu is writing to the screen" rather than " the gpu processing makes it faster"
read between the lines here. they have done this every release since the dawn of time and every time we get sucked in.
i just tried some stuff with the new player on my new mac. That one has a top of the line graphics card and i couldn´t see any performance improvements there either, so yeah, i think Squize was right with the assumption that the gpu support is either completely disabled for this beta or it is only available for very few cards now and they will add more with the next beta release (well,i hope so).
Also with the mac and safari i have i have the bug that when i choose settings in the right click (on mac control click) menu it opens a menu where it has "security" written as in security settings but besides that the window isn´t populated and doesn´t even have any buttons to close it or interact with it in other way. Do others with mac/safari have the same issue?
Did you try directly killing the process instead of the application? In my experience, trying to end an application that has crashed never works well, but going to the process tab and ending it usually works instantly. You probably already know this, Just can't imagine that killing the process didn't work.Quote:

to blink: other plugins that also run in the browser and have full on gpu support do run at way better performance than the flash player of course. In theory,even with just putting a chunk of the graphic world load over to the graphic card as they say it does now it should have way better performance than previous players, so yeah, at least there´s hope its just a temporary thing addressed with one of the next betas.
yeah, i ended up killing the proccess, but yeah, still took a while cause as i said for some reason it made the thing unresponsive to the degree that my whole system didn´t react propperly for a short while.Quote:

I've had that twice. Once when trying to get Dofus working, and a second time on birchlabs.co.uk when I was trying to confirm what you've said (interestingly this happened AFTER having opened it successfully beforehand and closing it). In case it helps, the only thing I was doing differently the second time was that Software Update was running a check for new software, and I think I right-clicked on the window without it having focus. There are two buttons on that prompt. Both of them appear to do the same thing, which is (if I recall correctly) close the prompt and bring you to the correct one instead.
Anyone tried out Adobe's Pixel Bender demo yet? For some reason it has a framerate counter on it, and interestingly, it's getting framerates of above 600 fps (runs at 20 fps if I force it to use the CPU to render, FYI). Perhaps more interesting is that if I drag some other app in front of Pixel Shader, covering up the canvas in it, the FPS increases dramatically, to about 800 fps. This suggests that it's not rendering pixels that are covered up. The repercussions of this are that if that is indeed the Flash Player lurking in there (for example, if this program was written in Adobe AIR or Flex rather than in Java), then we could have loads of swf banner adverts on a webpage, and they'd stop hogging rendering time if we scrolled past them. Also, the stark difference in software and hardware rendering speeds suggests that we could be looking at something like 30 times better performance when the GPU's involved. Plus it means my graphics card is compatible. :)
i have that settings menu bug on the mac anytime i open it (with the new player), so yeah, another bug to report :)
And yeah, i tried pixel blender,too and i have really cool performance using it with the graphics card,too. So yeah,if they get that supported in the flash player that´d be great.
I highly doubt Adobe will risk launching a buggy player, for something like Flash Player the cost is too great.
Overall, even if they don't deliver on all that is promised, I still think that its a nice upgrade. After AS3.0 the changes seem pretty minor and easy to adapt to.
Did inverse kinematics make it in?? ;-)
Looking forward to this, i would definately like to know more about the inverse kinematics.. If this is an easily enabled runtime feature we might see a bit of an onslaught of 'ragdoll' games :-|

Mike, I gotta ask, what features do _you_ want in Flash? I've never known you post any positive or enthusiastic comments regarding any new or upcoming technology? I really am just curious that's all..

Mike, all I ask to flash is to provide the basic tools to make everything. Adobe don't have to make top complete libraries, the community will take care of this. I guess PaperVision will take advantage of the new 3D tools and that we'll see very soon incredible sound libraries poping up.
That's all I'm asking. Make it fast ( that would be te most basic "tool" ), so it can maintain frame rates reasonably well. Same with sound. All I really need is a reliable way to sequence different sounds and ability to alter pitch with actionscript. nothing else.
Papervision will not take care of 3D for games though, not games that I want to do, so for that we need at least Director level 3D.
Until then I'm sticking with fake 3D that runs well.
You don't consider Inverse Kinematics or Hardware acceleration basic tools then? IK is one of the most important tools in 3D and hardware acceleration should offer the stable frame rate you're talking about
