I think that the increasing level of rudeness towards 2a is getting out of hand. It's a shame that Tony has to come to this thread and defend everything about his studio. I doubt that anyone posting here really has this much anger towards 2advanced - I think it's more jealousy.

[rant] Im getting sick of going thru 300 ****ty posts to get to a good one, specially coming from ppl whos biggest clients seem to be theyr uncle and girlfriend dad, who are going on and on about the mistakes they did when the ver was launched, its ok, its a good thing when its constructive but i mean, hell, looks like everybody is just trying to flame the guys why? just because they have a succesfull studio? because they did a party? because of the resolution? because of the hype? looks like everything they do will be judge just because.
They sure know how to promote themselves, and what target they are reaching, when u have some experience on this bussiness u learn that knowing how to sell yourself and creating expectation to your work is a VERY important matter, if not try to get a job where other 50 guys are showing a good portfolio, me as a graphic designer have had to go thru all of that, having to fight with other 50 ppl to get a good steady job and i know what a difference your image can do i mean mygod thats what youre selling, and thats what your potential client looks and fall for, how can you trust a designer to carry your brand when he cant even sell himself or his bussines?
Sure they have mistakes and bugs to fix, i mean who doesnt? theyre not perfect, theyre not god, they have a lot of proyects going on at the same moment and that my friend is VERY stressfull and hard to deal with, the guy comes here to answer questions and get a feedback from the com and all he gets is flames, thats just not right, looks to me like we are not taking advantage of the situation, maybe ask WHY they did the things they did before flaming, use his experience, his knowledge, specially the newbies, learn all u can from those guys, im not a 2a lover btw but i respect them just as i respect every succesfull design studio, im allways open to learn from everybody, and hey if theyre on top they must be doing something right, and what bothers me the most is that ppl that are just starting are more worried about finding little imperfections then helping and getting something out of it.
They didnt make the expectations. . . thats the other thing going around, whos expectations? as someone said on another post, mygod what did u expect? a blonde to come out of the screen and get you a beer??

I don't know if there's that much rudeness. There's one or two posters who get out of hand, which is obvious to all, the rest post opinions and views that may differ from the 2A boys, but aren't rude in any way. I'm certainly of the viw that if there are any "2A haters" as such (unless Tony's been getting hate mail that we don't know about! ;)).Quote:

Even with the differing views on resolution issues, if Tony can make a business case (as he says they have) for not designing for 800 x 600 then that is there choice. They can decide not to cater for those 40+% of users - I and probably most others cannot - but that's their choice, which they have every right to make.
As for the "hype" about their copy and so forth, get real guys. It's all about the hype. To go on about being "realistic" in their marketing - hello, where have you been for the past 60 years? Much of marketing is about - if you looked at it honestly - overblown hype, but guess what? It gets the punters in, it gets them interested and excited. There is more than just one way to market to a target audience, and this is a valid technique. For those who say they have a "degree" in marketing and don't recognise that, then I would suggest you relook at what your degree covered and how companies are marketng themselves in the marketplace. Personally I don't really think that "Coke is it", but it seems many others do.
(and by the way, I'm 4/5th of a way through a marketing degree myself, which doesn't mean I know anymore than the next guy, but does mean that I'm not pissing in the dark too).
Anyway, apart from anyting else, it would seem by the work they have on that their marketing is working, so who would anyone be to say it's wrong?
its good to see people from the leading industry houses are still coming on here to talk to us.
im not a fan of the splash, feels sloppy, rushed... not sure what word im looking for, but more attention to the graphics/blending would have been nice.
im not a fan of the typography errors on the site, or a few other graphical bits which spoil the overall look of the site.
other than the errors the site is good.
serves its purpose, and 2A are obviously more than happy with it.
2A cant expect an easy ride... no top agency has ever had an easy ride, from david carson to sachii they all get flak from other designers, be it because they love surfing and have no formal design training, or because they are ecentric and dont give a toss for the 'norm'
2A chose a different size for the site. i dont see a problem with that.
they chose to make it look like some form of retro, atari spin off... which i dont mind at all... it reminds me of all the old games i used to play.
they have kept the 'techno, future' feel to the site... all good, thats thier identity.
the code is 'revolutionary'? i wouldnt know. im not a coder, and have no cares for back end coding. my thing is graphics, layout and typography etc, so i couldnt possibly pass comment on the code.
other than i dont see the point of w3c, reminds me too much of the federation of master builders... and what a pain in the arse that has been since joining! :-/
i would say it was overhyped... but to the public i think it was justified... they most probably loved it, considering the number of sites in the web that look like rathergood.com !
from a designer community point of view the site would never live up to the hype.
its common sense that not everyopne is going to like the site from an asthetic point of view.
but good marketting is good business.
only thing that worries me are those mistakes...
please fix them!

Dave, I think Shane is being mellow here. I believe he posted in reference to someone else (a few pages back) that was giving us credit for being the first to go 1024. Not that we aren't flattered by the notion... In reality, we can't lay claim to "first". :) It's all good. After all the post reading the past few days, I think we are just numb now ;)Quote:

the main navigation and mainframe are visible at 800x600.
Site dimensions should never be or have been an issue by anyone.

this is sad... well weird... and confusing to me
when I saw Billy Bussey's new website, I enjoyed the pointless 3D animation transition, but thinking to myself "this is a site with little content and interactivity... and NOT a website of today's definition, maybe for the future when broadband merges with TV and every site is like a DVD presentation or commercial short"
then I saw 2A's site, which has lota content/interactivity and well designed/structured etc, and some moderately cool 3D stills... but I wasn't WOW impressed... because there was no... those "pointless 3D animation transition" which made me take points off bb's site...

This thread is crazy! Give these guys a break. Obviously the site has a controversial design... but what site doesn’t? I think everyone got their feelings hurt when the countdown hit 0 and what they got was a regular (regular to cool site browsers anyways) website.
In regards to the screen resolution... I assume you know exactly what resolution and monitor size web users will be running in 2 years? I don't think 2A's site is getting a facelift for quite some time... so why not stay one step ahead? Your grandma might not be able to read the links... But I'm sure that's not the market they're shooting for.
I just don't feel it's right to bash the 2A team to death... In fact, after browsing through some of the negative users portfolios... I don't think they should have any say at all.

And I could imagine how numb you'd be, though think of all that free user testing!! I usually have to pay thousands for that much feedback!! ;)
To the guys ay 2A - you deserve a beer! You've taken a real flaming over the new site. I've even dished out some criticism myself. If you make statements to the effect of 'were the best' then you're asking for it! :p But........ you've responded to our criticisms and I appreciate that. It's got to be a benefit to the FK community when we have people with your experience joining in on the discussion boards. (whether we agree with you or not :D)Quote:

So Tony, from this i think we can safely assume that Launch countdowns are a bad idea if yer site is as big as 2advanced (bandwidth wise anyway).

and for the record shane...my site actually has a sniffer for 800 x 600 monitors that redirects you to another layout :) LOL
