well done everyone, i didn't pick any, especially your one gerbs.
congrats to all the sweet sixteeners, though all the images rocked.
and i too had everyone's arse-backwards.
I had a couple picked out right, EVP, Fearless, and Gerbs...other than that, wow...
But the award goes to MarkP for suprising me the most. Who knew he had any talent for making anything but weird aminated gifs.
EDIT: Oh and I am going up against Ctranter? I'm screwed
on second though, F typing, I am not giving a synopsis, if you want to know what I thought of you image PM me ;)
p.s. markpenis, you are going down in the next round. *secretly hides fear behind taunting jibs, whilst worrying that the name calling will inspire him to try even harder in his next image*
A super big WELL DONE to gesteves. Nice going, my man. You stomped me goooood! :D
And congrats to all who will be progressing to the next round. Great job!!!
I've just posted a thread showing how my image was put together. Comments and crits welcome...let me know what went wrong, guys. :)
that's an amazing tutorial rush...
I don't feel deserving
Althoug It feels good to go head to head with Dri, the fact that my oponents didn't drop I move on by default. I put a lot of work with my image but it doesn't feel right.
I had evp and feerlless guessed right, fearless was easy, the image he dropped looked inspire by one that was dropped in that famous O vs F battle.... and evp had his signature female facials with great type.
Natsia I think you are to harsh on your self, your image and your pairing was one of the most difficult to vote for, you did an amazing job
Hybrid inc you also blew me away with your drop man, fresh and just brilliant
I have a comments for everyones image, but its 1:45 A.M. and I have to be up at 7, see you guys then.
Great job to everyone! :grouphug:
Wow! Congrats everyone! I was suuuuuuure I was going to lose! :)
It was so close!
When are the hollywood style acceptance speeches? :D

hope you bought an umbrella girl, cause i'm gonna take you to a world of rain!

Alright, so I'm not going to wait for anyone to ask. Why? Not because I believe you want to know what I think specifically, but I know that you want to know what other people think in general and I'm just one of those people. Personally I know I would appreciate it if each and every one of you took the time pen down a few of your thoughts regarding my image, especially since everyone seemed to hate it so much. :D Your input will be invaluable in helping me do better next time.
We all want to know. And just to make sure I'm not asking for more than I'm willing to give, I took the time to try to give an accurate representation of the factors that I took into consideration when I was voting. I also made an effort not to say anything negative without also including ideas on how I thought it might be improved. If I happen to say something about your image that you don't like try not to take it personally. It's only my opinion, and from my perspective I would rather have the truth about what someone sees in my work so it might actually help me improve.
So yeah, talk to me. No need to be rude, but I'll tell ya now I want your opinions and I want it straight. Anyone need a clearer invitation for a crit? :)

I only seem to have but a small group of fans, but you're welcome to it, lol. Thanks, bud! :D
Onto the crits...
March Madness 2006 Round 2 Critiques
Pairing A
Image 1 - EVPohovich
This is a beautiful image. I love the vibrancy of the purple and the striking nature of the girl's green eyes. Image blending was skillful and the typography was tight. I liked everything that was going on with the globe...highlights, reflections...and the whole image support the message. This is the image that got my vote.
Image 2 - Markp.com
I've got to give you some props here, Mark. gerbick-worthy type treatment along with some artfully done accents gave this image a certain level of sophistication. Keeping things simple worked for you and kept the focus for the image narrow and tight. It was a tough call.
Pairing B
Image 1 - mr_malee
I thought this was a cool image. Fairly simple, but effective. The splotches I found to be somewhat indicative that something gruesome had just happened. Choice of colors was good and the type was well done. If I hadn't voted for this image those eyes just might have haunted me forever.
Image 2 - squidlips
I thought the basic concept behind this image was reasonably good, but overall the image lacked visual interest for me. I think this image might have been improved by replacing the white space with something that had a little more energy. It could be argued that the 'deadness' of the image supports the message, but I still think it needed something more.
Pairing C
Image 1 - pointguard
I'm afraid this image just didn't work for me.The gates seemed rather out of place and what lay behind them bore little resemblance to heaven as I understand the concept. If not a different gate altogether, I think that making the gate white would have strengthened it's connection to the concept of heaven for me. This is a completely subjective opinion, though. I thought the blending of the black could have been a little more subtle and the bottom text block I think would have been better centered on the black space rather than pushed over to the left. Either that or the bottom sentence moved up and to the right so it nestled in that space to the right of the 'H' in heaven. The upper type looks very discordant and I think could use a tighter arrangement, but other than what I mentioned, I liked how you set up the text on the bottom block.
Image 2 - TheWaste
This was a great image. I liked the concept and the excecution. Just a couple of things I might have changed. I think the focus of the image could have been improved by darkening the right side of the image so that the light of the door held a little more visual weight. As strong a visual lure as the door is, I still find myself getting distracted by the right side of the image and my focus keeps getting pulled back over there, where there is really no reason for my eye to be lingering. Another very minor thing is that the upper right corner of the door seems to be ever so slightly less blurred than the rest of it. This is making the door stand out just a little too much for me, jarring the believability of the image. On the boy I think I would have pushed the whites just a little bit farther and if you were to remove the black matte around the boy it would get rid of those dark edges which should (imho) be if not full on white, then very close. But I nitpick...like I said this is a very cool image with a great concept...and that's why it got my vote.
Pairing D
Image 1 - gesteves
Great stuff, man. Clearly the popular choice, which makes you numba one in da hood, g! Who doesn't like the domo? Fun concept that was obviously very succesful. Well done. :) I didn't vote for you though, because...well, that would have been stupid seeing as how I was your opponent. :D Good luck in the later rounds!
Image 2 - RUSHVision
I loved everything about this image. Simply stunning. A masterful piece of artist brilliance. What more can I say. Oh yeah...thanks to the other two people who voted for me! :D
Pairing E
Image 1 - gerbick
I liked everything about this image except for the chickens themselves. I think the lighing on the chickens would be better suited to placing them over to the left where there is more light falling in the background image. This one got my vote.
Image 2 - hightech
Again I thought the chickens looked rather out of place. The general concept was fairly good and I liked the 'lucasification' of the logo. The background explosion is decent, but I think it could have been blended in with the background a little better.
Pairing F
Image 1 - Dave-O
I think the message fit the mood fairly well, but this one could have used a little something more. Things I might recommend would be to possibly move the girl over to the right side and maybe play with the colors a little bit to give everything more of an overall red tone.
Image 2 - Dricciotti
I thought this was an interesting melding of imagery. The blood dripping down into the shape of a heart was a nice touch. Using the negative space of the diagonal lines added depth and the lines themselves served to draw your eye up to the face. The artist also made good use of selective color. All of these elements served to sway my vote in favor of this image.
Pairing G
Image 1 - NJP3
I thought this was a pretty good use of the given stock. The lighting was a little bit off on the hand, but I gave it my vote anyway.
Image 2 - nordberg
I think this has the makings of a good image, but I couldn't really get the message that this image was trying to put across. There seems to be several disparate styles at work that aren't really meshing with each other. Purely my opinion, but this one just didn't impact me in a meaningful way.

Pairing H
Image 1 - Fearless
This one had a lot of things going on. A lot of dark disturbing things going on. The font choice fit in perfectly with the mood and the colors were appropriately depressing. My vote went to this image.
Image 2 - TheDevilRidesIn
This image was actually really good. The choice of the masked figures and the general style fit well with the March Madness theme. Type was well done and suited the rest of the image nicely. If this had been up against a weaker image then I would have voted for this one. Poor luck of the draw in this case.
Pairing I
Image 1 - Hybrid Inc
I have to admit the message of this image was somewhat lost on me. I couldn't quite make out what the artist was trying to say. I thought that the use of the stock was creative however, and while it was a tough decision, the overall lines and presentation of the image held a coherency that garnered my vote. Whatever it was, it looked good.
Image 2 - lefteyewilly
What I liked most about this image was the typography. I thought the choice of font, treatment of the text and the message itself was all very well done. What I wasn't quite as excited about was the zebras. It fits rather well with the 'head2head' theme, but I wasn't feeling any other kind of connection to the rest of the image. I like the vector circles in the background, but I think they could have been made a more prominent element of the overall design. A good effort, but not quite as successful as the opposing image.
Pairing J
Image 1 - clicky2
This image had a number of things going for it. The background was interesting without being distracting and the overall tones fit well with the theme. Selective and subtle use of deep and subdued color made the eyes especially stand out in a very striking manner. The type was well-arranged and the font choice fit well with the rest of the image. The successful merging of all these elements was a key factor in my choice to vote for this image.
Image 2 - Natsia
I thought that this was literally a work of art. It had a painterly style that lent the image a soft richness. I was especially drawn to the area around the base of the flower as this was most reminiscent of and old-style oil painting. The presentation was clean and simple which gave the image a certain elegance. The only thing I really found lacking in this image was typography. It may be said that if this image is to be likened to an oil painting then one might expect not to find writing all over it, but I have to admit that the lack of it was the deciding factor in my choice. A lovely piece of work with tough competition.
Pairing K
Image 1 - nepzap2
This was an image that I thought was really well done. Overall tones of the image are consistent and again the artist has made good use of selective color. The woman's eyes are an excellent mechanism for leading the viewer's eye down towards the cherry and open mouth. Big on the 'just plain cool' factor.
Image 2 - No Image
Pairing L
Image 1 - pea3698
This was a really good concept. I like the idea of having a face coming out of the side of that building, but I think the blending of the two elements could have been a little more seamless. I liked the way the eyes capture your focus though, and the colors are in pleasing harmony.
Image 2 - creativeinsomnia
This was a very simple image in that there wasn't a whole lot of radical modification of the stock. What did get done though, fits in absolutely wonderfully with the message and the mood of the image. The type arrangement is also nothing short of..."Yeah, that's how ya do it.". The two images of the girls in the forefront do a beautiful job of portraying inner conflict and doubt. Superb and well deserving of my vote.
Pairing M
Image 1 - alty29
This is a good example of the successful merging of photographic and illustrative styles. There is a flow and a rythym to the image carries the eye to all kinds of interesting places. The subdued nature of the background is offset by the bold statement of the pink stripe and gives the image a reserved vibrancy. The white serves both as a nice separator and as a unifying element at the same time. It's all good here and that got my vote.
Image 2 - onine
I'm going to step out of my little narrative here and direct my comments directly to you, onine. I've seen you do some absolutely amazing stuff, so I'm not worried about you thinking you're crappy. I'm going to be honest with you though, and say that this isn't it, my friend. It really just doesn't do your talent justice at all. The message fits the content well, but the type treatment lacks...interest. I'm guessing that you chose yellows and reds in an effort to convey the intensity of a high-pressure situation, but I think it might be a little too intense. My eye keeps getting drawn away from the image where there is nothing to look at. The pressure guage in front is an obvious tie-in, so I can understand why it's there, but I think it should be just about to burst or something. I can see where (I think) you were trying to go with this, but I believe the image could have used some more refinement. Again...just so you know...I'm being more 'brutal' with you only because I know how good you are.
Pairing N
Image 1 - This image was a bit of a mystery to me. It is my belief that the simplicity of it requires there to be something to capture the viewer's interest behind the bars on the door. It's not too terribly obvious what might be in there, though. Just to make sure I didn't miss anything, I ramped up the gamma and finally noticed the word 'confinement' on the bottom, but to be honest I didn't see this when I was voting.
Image 2 - No Image
Pairing O
Image 1 - Ghostgirl705
This too, I thought was a nice merging of photographic and illustrative styles, though not quite as sophisticated as that presented by alty29. The comic book panel presentation fit perfectly with the text treatment and the message. I don't know why, but this image has an intangible 'fun' quality to it. It has an unusual 'life' to it. My vote went to this image.
Image 2 - silverx2
I wasn't sure what the artist was trying to get across with this image. The background pattern seemed very disconnected from the rest of the image and I couldn't grasp the significance of the blue stockings and both the blue and the red on the tips of the shoes seemed rather out of sync with the rest of the image. The pattern on the floor also seemed a little more suited to what you might find in a kitchen than on a dance floor. I guess I was just confused and need a little more direction to get the artist's message.
Pairing P
Image 1 - ctranter
This was beautiful, beautiful thing. Lighting, mood and content all served to evoke a powerful ambience. Rich textures and subtle detail added visual interest and the overall subdued tones are contrasted nicely with spots of color. My vote went here.
Image 2 - e-sharp
This had the makings of a fine image, but I felt that the type treatment could have used some refinement. The image as a whole had a nice ethereal quality to it that lent itself well to the message, but I believe the execution of the text keeps this image from getting truly high marks.
Ok, that's it, folks. Love me or hate me, there it is. :mrpimp:
great post RUSH! kind of reminds me of my roll canvas review. and you hit the nail on the head with my volley...i just sort of pecked at it all week, and didn't come up with a good concept at all. i am always trying to learn stuff, and this time i was messing with illustrator for the last three days, but didn't get anything i liked out of it other than those lines. i was going to add a bunch more white accents, but couldn't quite execute. that's why i had totally resigned myself to losing, and was OK with that - NJP3's image is a great concept. the voting was neck and neck the whole time...i'm surprised i came out on top.
