I realise a lot of this happened before the Aussies left the scene, but the internet.com logo has been slowly spreading across the home page since the takeover.
My advice: Remove the internet.com logo, remove at least half the internet.com links and "news items", kill the casino banner ads, and make it look like a community site again.
Seriously, what is the point in making FlashKit look like all the other internet.com sites? You will kill the goose that laid the golden egg!

And I also realize you guys have to make a buck, but some of the advertising stunts of late were quite appalling.
The incessant pop up for some rabbit something or other (goes to show how effective pop up advertising is. I saw the damn thing 50 times and I still don't know what it was selling). Who's idea was that?
I know I'm ranting a bit here, but when I first came here, this place was pure and now it's not.

Granted, that's fair enough but the problem arises when you have a huge network of sites like internet.com with many conflict of interest scenarios arising within them. This can lead to sites effectively being "skinned" to ensure compliance with the strategies of others. In this context, internet.com may choose to remove features/content which they see as competitive with another member of their network but which was useful for FK members.
That is the biggest change to consider when something switches from being a community to a commercial venture. But internet.com do have a lot of experience etc etc so one would hope (and almost assume) that they would look after the site in its current state. After all, if they have invested $XX.Xm in the venture, why would they choose to destroy it? they're going to be far more intelligent than that.
i think this has to be true, even with internet.com's servers flashkit seems to just be breaking even if that. The problem for me comes in the kind of advertising we get, i mean, does anyone here visit online casinos and liquor ads?? It's just a waste of their money to advertise on here, why aren't we getting ads from mm and adobe, or erain?? There's stuff out there that i AM interested in but online casinos ain't one of them! It seems to me that this is a perfectly targeted market, we're all different ages and from different places but the one thing we have in common? The internet and an interest in it, flash development and potentially anything related to that. There are all sorts of other communities and sites within internet.com that we could be encouraged to check out.. like javascript.com, relevant stuff.Quote:

i haven't even visited the front page for months, and i bet most other people here come straight to the boards. The front page used to interest me, i read the news items and i looked forward to a new featured site. i know that advertising is pretty much the only thing generating money for internet.com from flashkit (though i'm sure jezza has volunteered himself) and i would rather we got a thread together to click thru these stupid casino banners once everytime we visit fk. That way we can help to solidify flashkit and make sure the ads don't have to get any worse. I know that it sounds a bit dodgy and deceitful but sooo many sites do this kind of thing, you always see the 'please visit my sponsor' messages at the top of sites. Why shoudln't we make an effort to help out here? It would cost us nothing.
The only other way to do it is if WE as FK users were to pay a subscription to FK. Out of the ~ 250k users, lets say a quarter were to pay, and if we all payed $4.50 a month, that's still US$3.37m p.a which I am SURE is enough to finance this site which, if existing as a community funded by the community would be free of ads and other commercial things. In effect, we would be the first website community to "buy itself" out of a VC holding?
Perhaps we could even nominate the lead FK'ers to become the "management" etc etc etc

You know? Why pay us, when you can click on a banner? Yeah, most people aren't happy about the casinos, but who is out there trying to out bid them? Noone, because there are millions of impressions and minimal click thrus. If you wanna keep flashkit alive, click the banner. Eventually someone will out bid the casino.
There are a lot of younger folks here, who contribute a lot, but aren't able to afford a monthly.
The thing we ask, and is best to keep this going, is for you to click on a banner everytime we give you something you want/like. This is going to make us wanna make you estatic, trust me. 10 seconds and one click is minimal.
You know, I missed the part above, where you calculate 25% of the members paying a few dollars. Sorry about that. But that would be even harder to set up than the 100%, so I can't see them doing it. If everyone feels strongly, though, keep it going and I'll pitch it to them.

Just a quick note to everyone worried that this change in management will affect the site adversely.
Internet.com have owned the site for a long time now, somewhere in the order of a year. Yes, there were changes when they bought the site, some good, some bad. The important thing was, the site lived on and continued to prosper in many ways.
Since the time internet.com bought the site until now, the crew in .au have continued to manage the day to day running of the site, however the owners have also had a big say in what goes on (it is, afterall, their site). All that has happened now is that they have taken over the day to day running of the site. Internet.com have had all this time to make the changes they wanted, if there was something significant they wanted to change, they would have done it long ago. The conclusion to this in my opinion: you won't see any major changes as a result of this move. I honestly don't know what everyone is so worried about. I think John and Scott will do a great job (in the tradition of the previous webmasters) and they have already set hard to work (much of which is not available yet out there to all of you but trust me, it is going on). I think some people are unfairly writing them off already without even giving them a chance to prove themselves and that is a pretty piss-poor attitude.
You know, here's a trick for you, if you wanna keep internet.com in check.
Start clicking on banners. Let the suits get comfortable with the click thrus. Then, use it to your advantage. If you like something I/we do, click. If you don't, then don't click. If you stop clicking, your going to see me freaking out, trying to figure out what I did wrong, and how I can make it good. If you want a quicker effect, start a thread about your issue and then slow down on the clicking.
If there's no click thrus now, and none when there's a problem, what's the difference?

i agree with this, as i said before clicking on the banners is pretty damn easy and achieves a lot. If everyone who visited the forums clicked a banner once a day flashkit would probably be in a much better position.Quote:
