Windows is great for games. It is great for everything, except probably movie editing. But if you want that, get a mac.
I love games. I am a gamer. I am a shoot em up, stuff a frag down their throat gamer. I can't play my games on Mac or Linux.

windows is 'great' for games because it's the only machine games work on...

Um, that could not be any further than the truth. What are you talking about? If you're talking about the bundled free junk software provided on both OS's then maybe, but saying "windows isn't great for movie editing" is just plain bs. Nearly all feature films are cut on Avid Film Composer on high powered PC's. PC's also support dedicated DV capture and realtime editing cards, such as those built by Matrox, Canopus etc..-macs do not.Quote:

Avid DV Express, Premiere, After Effects, Vegas etc...all run perfectly on PC's...in fact these programs were written on a PC.
Right now Im having a hell of a time getting an Avid Film Composer on the Mac to export any file besides quicktime. Avid Film Composer for PC will export virtually anything.

Why don't they make it so games can be played on Linux? It's freeware... that's the idea, they can make games.
And you know... I don't consider myself a sheep.
If it works for me, then it's good. I am not a follower. If Linux can beat Microsoft, while suppporting GOOD games, and software like Flash, I would use it. But as of now, for my uses, Linux's ass is grass.

If they did make games for linux I have no doubt it would be better than the win platform. But as it is we're stuck with window's crappy handling of open GL and buggy video support.

Games are starting to appear on Macs properly now; Mac OS X has system level support for OpenGL.
Medal of Honor, Black and White, Wolfenstein etc. there are loads out there...it's more an issue that MS has control of the market than it's actually good at being a games platform.

Well, as long as it is the only one to run my games AND Flash.... It is what I will use. I don't do it blindly. Sure, I look for better options to fit my needs. But as of now, I just havn't found any.

The K desktop is more like the Mac Desktop... It is focused on usability and is very usable- what exactly is your wrong with it? The Windows knockoff distros act like windows becuase well... that is the point. They are migration distros. They clone the way windows looks and feels so the windows users that jump the fence don't get scared off.Quote:

They are porting the K desktop to Darwin so there must be something desirable there. Likewise they are porting the Gnome desktop to Windows (see my freeware thread for the link) so again there must be something there also.
Its bogus to say all linux apps are knock offs of other apps and are no good. Its not true. If it were true there would be no desire to port them and CYGWIN and the likes would not exist.
As far as no games for Linux??? There are games for Linux. Lots of them in fact. They just aren't typically from the larger game houses, although some are, but that does not mean there aren't any nor does it mean they are no good. Heck 30 games were created for the Indereama alone before it went down. The Indreama was the Linux version of the Xbox, which got canceled becuase investors didn't want to invest in a technology that directly competed with Microsoft. Speaking of Xbox there is already games out for Linux on XBox.
However with Linux on the desktop growing at its current rate it is expected that Linux will surpass MAC OSX on the desktop in the next few years. Also Linux/Unix Apache is what is powering the WEB right now. As a server IIs is not the most popular or most used so saying that more people use MS products than anything else is FUD. On servers Apache is still over 60%. Yet the most numner of exploits and Virili still happen to be on the MS products. The only explanation is that they do not spend the apropriate amount of time testing their junk.
Windows and MAC don't have SodiPodi and the GIMP doesn't work as well in Windows as on Linux. There are about a half dozen apps that I use which are only for Linux...Quote:

I use a dual boot or Knoppix when traveling to machine to machine. Klaus Knopper is a Genuis.
In over three years of running Linux desktops - several at a time - I've had two/three crashes, and they weren't due to Linux. All of my machines run 24x7. Gotta remember, Linux isn't the distribution and it's not the software that runs on it.Quote:

OSS is great because it's your's to do what you want - whether you buy it or it's free. But, it also allows anyone to modify/create and offer their's to the world. It can be very hard to find the right product/developer (especially the free ones) without some research. But the same goes for any industry.
One great quote by Linus is: "It's ready when it's ready". (of course Microsoft doesn't have quite that luxury, I understand).
What other industry prevents you from modifying what you buy? Is the hood welded shut on your car - would you buy a car that your neighbor built from looking at his car? If you want to build a room on the house, you have the blueprints - would you hire a 14 year old to build it? The only thing similar, that I can think of in my morning daze, is the ingredients of the prepared food you buy is only listed in order, not itemized.

The prior two were because of screensavers choking the memory.
