When I found out someone made a software program that the average idiot(savante) could use to animate things it drew me in, now the sweet intoxication that is "Flash" will forever course through my veins.
Oh, you were asking about Flash..KIT! I did a search for tutorials and FK was numero uno on the list. I signed up for the free stuff and FK has done a wonderful job helping to satiate my addiction.
.....................THANKS FLASHKIT!!!!!!!!!!!!.....................
like many others i dont remember exactly how i found flash, but i do remember why! opps no i dont :) i probably open up flash and wondered what the heck is this all about then!
originally i went to the tuts and then progressed to the movies then i got here very recently. I've answered a question, asked one and done a couple of site checks so i guess i'm slowly moving out of the red on my FK account! (the largest folder on my desktop is my flash tuts folder 99% downloaded from FK!)
I really like it here ............
I found Flashkit absolutely by chance. But then flash gradually bacame an important part of my life, of my work, and of my income... :-)
Many thanks to J. Gay, M. Fennel, E. Jordan, B. Gates,...
Vahagn
Found Flashkit after a Google search on Flash tutorials for Flash 5, mostly for trying figure out how to do MovieClips.
Tutorials, online help and the sound FX are the best. :D
hmmmmm....where did i come from?
well basically i had a class called tech team in school, and when i first got flash 5 the teacher, a fellow student, referred me to here to learn...
basically i came here knowing how to move stuff around....
then i learned that action script existed, upgrade to MX and wonders happened
i look back at my first attempt to an intro to a site and i think did i actually make that thing???
haha i love it here,
saved time and effort on lots of learning
thanks to whom it is due!

also...
i really appreciate the standards that has been set up here at FK
really makes it easy to just well just be here without having to worry about running into anything wrong...
thanks again

Hadn't used Flash since I was taught it in college. Got roped into doing a Flash web based app. for the company I work for. A shockingly easily distracted person, I found myself doing work in between posting here and at newtek, CG Talk, Flash pro, Site point, etc. Now I'm hooked I find it hard to get anything else done lol.
Thanks:)
Boy, I do't remember what brought me in, but the slowness and overwhelming amount of ads brought me out
Originally I came for the downloadable movies and soundfx but the value of this forum, i.e. being able to get questions answered by experts for free is my current interest. I think it's a great site and I find that the ads do not slow things down over here, seems pretty fast. I certainly wouldn't worry about any negativity people are providing here, as a former University web design instructor I can tell you that your site is just fine and dandy. Thanks very much for everything you provide, have a pleasant tomorrow. :)
Started using flash 4 as soon as it was out, for animation.
First checked out flashkit when I was building an educational game around june 2000, needed some as help- found it here.
It's hard to deal with some of the questions that are posted in the forums these days- People need to check out tutorials and documentation that comes with the software before posting (!). So, I've found the forums to be of little interest lately.
Once in a while I check out loops, sfx, etc. - great to have such large collections of material available to browse.
Seems like a great portal for people just getting in to flash tho.
cheers
:doughnut:
Actually I strted frequenting flashkit in early 2000. I got out of the navy and got a job as an applications instructor at a tech school and flash was one of the first apps I picked up. I decided I would see what I could find out on the net about flash and found another site.... I can't remember the name similar to flashkit. I forget the name it was a blue site... that never got updated much. And there I found a link to flash kit. And after 3 years of teaching everything form word to web design to Network engineering I still refer all my students to flashkit. I remember 2advanced version1. Ultrashock before it went live and alot of other now non existant flash comunity sites. Flash kit is still my fav followed closely by Were-here.com and ultrashock.com
And actually I was a regular on the boards for a awhile but haven't posted in about 2 years now. Lol how time flies...
Well thats my rant thenks,
James Waymire
My TA for my freshman year in college was featured as a FlashGod or something by flashkit and he showed us in class. Being only a year younger than him, and seein all the cool crap he could do, I figured I'd take a stab at it. And whenever I got into a bind, flashkit has been the answer, especially now that I have a job doin flash 24/7. You dont even have to know flash now to get a job doin flash, you just have to know the basics and know people to help. I figured I'd be a slacker for life but it's weird how you learn things when you do it for so long. I now find myself asking less and helping more. And I think that's why flashkit has and will survive.
my uncle told me to come here, he told me there would be sound effects and movies and tutorials and games and all that other stuff... i then found about about the forums, and so i signed up...
i just hang here now,
and thats it........... i think:rolleyes:
well, he told me to come here cause i was just a beginner in flash 4... i got better the more i came here... then i moved to flash 5, which is alot more comfortable... i now know alot more than my uncle does in flash 5!!! muah ha ha ha ha ha!!:D (he does pro. websites too ;) )
and now im hoping to get my hands on flash mx ( and a new computer ;) )
and thats it............ for sure...
but the reason i came to the forums was because i could never find wha i was looking for in the tutorials section and the movies section and the search section thing... and i got hooked in the coffee lounge, but every once in a while, i help the poor and mindless in the general help and the newbies forums...
and thats it............ yes:rolleyes:
Thanks all for keeping this thread sooo great and clean :)
i used to be one of those people who make crappy "homepages" with drag-n-drop web based editors. all my stuff would come out ugly and disorganized. i had no design sense. well somehow my IE5 broke and wouldnt display any kind of java applets which was what the web based editors displayed with. well i was hooked and wanted somethin to make sites with. i did search after search on web based editors. finally i gave up and learned html. nut of course i still wanted more. so i did more search on webdesign stuff and found out about macromedia flash. i downloaded the trial (flash 5) and opened it but was intimidated by its complexity so i immediately closed it. 5 days b4 the end of the trial i opened it again and started to mess with it and learned a bit but then the trial ran out. so i bought and and then i still didnt know crap so i looked up flash stuff online and found FK. and have lived happily ever after :D
at the end of 1999 early 2000 it was the only decent flash site around. I've learned a lot here.
It's still the best flash site around.
keep up the good work

I was just a young boy at the time, scared and confused.
People were pressuring me to try new things...html, photoshop,
zip drives...you know, that sorta thing.
I never really hung out with that crowd, you know, the computer
nerds. But then one day something sparked my interest. I don't know what it was, but I just felt like doing something crazy! "All the others were doing it," I remember telling myself. So I said screw it and I gave into peer pressure.
The decisions me make all come back to haunt us. I'm here today to tell you that my handle is VT360....and I am addicted to flashkit
I owe a great debt to the people and posters on Flashkit
I started knowing only drag and drop HTML using dreamweaver.
From flashkit i learned flash printed off almost every tutorial on this site pored over the content day and night, and got my first job in the industry. That was 5 years ago. Now im Senior Webdesigner for a company in london, and i still use this site almost every other week. Its a great source of scripts, knowledge, and most importantly talent. The forums are invaluable.
omg
looking at this thread now, made me cry . Old good times and what a crowd :) almost 10 years since i started this. Is there any new members who like to add the story ? :)
I would add one... but I swear I had already done that...
wow, seeing the names of members long absent brought back great memories. It would be really good to know what has happened in their lives.
Like many others, I don't post much any more, but I lurk around.
david
tomorrow I shall feast on Vegetable and pasta soup...
quick tid-bits.
when I first found FK.. I was teaching at a local tech school... (hahahaha.. I think I was here searching for an answer to 'swish' or something I used back then....then found Flash)..
married, 2 kids now... a couple jobs later..
and I still pop-in and surf/help out if I can. :)
Learned alot here.. not just about 'flash' but whatever other hobbies/interests we all brought to the table..
was nice to be able to 'pick' the collective brain trust in the CL about whatever.
[good times]
A partner of mine pointed me to FK in early 2000 after seeing it lauded as THE place for flash. I lurked for a while as I grabbed audio clips and stupid text animations from that text animation tool that used to be here. I had zero intention of learning to code but our first client (Buddy Hacket's son Sandy) asked for one of those html splash pages that launched the flash site into a popup and I had to sign up in order to ask questions. I remember the answer came from Colin Moock. Little did I know he was a giant in the industry.
Shortly after I realized I'd have to learn a lot and promptly put flash on the shelf for a while. I eventually got serious around '04, managed to remember the place and spend all day in the actionscript 2 room. After running out of posts to reply to I found my way to the CL. I was quickly edited for responding to a thread dealing with ex-girlfriends with a story about one of my ex's who disappeared and reappeared in porn. I was reprimanded for calling the mod's nazi's by one Mr. Gerbick. We've been close friends ever since and the rest is history.
What a strange occurrence!
I just logged in to FK for the first time in a year, and after browsing around for awhile I found this thread. I also went back and looked at my oldest posts for nostalgic AS2 goodness.
I enrolled here almost 8 years ago, after getting a copy of MX2004. I was instantly hooked on the animation, but never figured out the coding, so I found this site.
In 2004 I was a high school dropout with no prospects of work. I learned enough AS2 in the coming year to start work as an assistant to a Flash developer, eventually learning enough to build my own websites. We grew the agency, eventually working on a site for Marilyn Manson. Flashkit was my go-to for every question I had.
2008 changed everything business-wise, every company was cutting back marketing budgets, and work began to dwindle. It took two years (2010) before I was laid off.
I took the summer to relax, and randomly found a craigslist post for another Flash job.
It was for the biggest agency in my city, they needed a freelancer. I started doing AS2 banners and websites, and instead of fighting AS3, I eventually decided it was time to learn it. Every day for 4 months I studied everything I could about it, using this site as a great tool. I quickly became an AS3 developer, and replaced the agencies other Flash guy.
I'm now the lead developer here, with another Flash guy working below me. I've done work for FILA, Marriott, Under Armour, The Art Institutes, and tons of other big name clients. I've also recently been spearheading an effort to dive into mobile application development, and it's great to know I can turn to Flash for this.
It's been a great 8 years, but the future is uncertain for myself and Flash. I'm learning a lot about HTML/CSS/JS, PHP, and even some Obj-C. I'm afraid that Adobe is no longer behind Flash like they used to be. In the agency world, it's all about buzzwords, and Flash has a bad connotation these days :(
I dont remember why I joined but I remember checking the "Cool sites" section very frequently. Waiting for the next big thing, like 2Advanced and Eye4U.
That was over 10 years ago, now I'm married, 4 kids, and still doing my flash thing. More on the mobile front but its still my bread winner.
When I joined, getting on for 10 years ago, knowing nothing about Flash, I thought what a friendly, helpful place it was. I really could ask a stupid question without feeling belittled by the answer. Lately a the folks at a couple of the larger sites I did in Flash have asked me to do an HTML version, readable on iPads etc. I know the basics, but really I've just used HTML to load Flash movies, so it's been a crash course learning how to do the equivalent to the existing site. I've found a pretty well used HTML forum, but I'm really disappointed with the attitude - a couple of times I've come close to telling them where to shove their code. I ask a question, post a link or the code I've used and get 'I wouldn't do it like that', or 'that's a really OTT way of doing it'. So tell me how to do it, or suggest where I can go to find out. Makes me appreciate even more what FK did for me - hell, it helped me make a passable living for the last few years.
It was 10 years ago. I had learned HTML and CSS, but that was not satisfying. I looked into Flash, I bought a version. I think it was Flash 5. Of course we all have questions, when we use a program and there is a problem. I searched in Google and found Flashkit. That's it. Sounds like a story thousands of others can tell.
Elective course in school. Flash Game Development.
Wow...blast from the past here. I got out of college in '96 with a major in creative writing and a minor in philosophy...ready to wait tables forever. :)
I ended up landing a job via nepotism at my dad's company doing e-learning, which I never had an interest in, but it paid the bills...and then I found flash. It was so much different than the coding world of HTML and easier to use than Director or Authorware (dinosaurs now). When I needed help, inspiration or just someone to chat with, I came to FK.
Learned SO much from FK, went through many jobs (after getting laid off by my dad...lol) and am still doing flash full-time AND doing sideline jobs as well.
Married, 2 kids, divorced, all is well. As often as I can, I try to help out newbies to pay back all the help I've gotten here. I also spend lots of time STILL asking questions and am now making the painful transition to AS3 and turning myself more into a coder than I ever wanted.
A bit bittersweet seeing all the buzz about html5/css3 and the "demise" of flash, but, it's all good, the electronic world will keep changing and there will always be work for those willing to change with it. :)
Thanks for everything FK and ALL the people who have helped me throughout the years! :)
I occasionally make it back here, usually to see how people are reacting to major world events. It's always kind of been another community of diverse people with different reactions and points of view.
I'm happy to say I do indeed work in the technology industry these days. I work as an interactive marketing strategist for an agency in Chicago; we design/develop law firm websites and other marketing technology products. I pretty much consult with clients on business goals, site requirements, user experience, IA, all that fun stuff.
It's funny to think I started out here at about 22 while a junior in college (I think). I've been in Chicago 10 years now, engaged and getting married soon - we've been together for over nine years now). Bought a house back in late 2010, generally enjoying a successful career so far and have been in the legal industry for about 9 years now. Fortunate to do a decent amount of traveling and photography in the past few years, much of which you can find here - www.flickr.com/mg33. I'm pretty active with my blog as well at www.randomtransmission.com. I'm a few days away from a big update to my mg33.net site as well, finally finishing off a large photo portfolio.
Anyhow, really cool to see a lot of old names in this thread!
I joined almost 10 years ago as well.
Can't tell you how many times I logged in for tutorials, sound files, snippets, advice....
Q: Have to learn AS2? A: Flashkit
Q: Have to learn AS3? A: Flashkit
Q: XML and Actionscript A: Flashkit
etc.
I know that I don't have as many posts as others who have been around as long as I have, but trust me I am here all the time. I have tried to give back as much as I could but looking back I would say for certain that I have gotten more out of this place than I have taken. Not only has this place help me stay innovative, it's probably helped me just plain keep my job at times. For that I can only humbly say thank you.
I'm certainly not alone when I say that I share the same hunger as mg33 did, and FK's 'debates' and 'updates' have sort of nourished me in more ways than I could ever imagine -- of course, I dare imagine too that FK could have risen to be the "twitter" or "facebook" of today..
Nevertheless, it still feels warm, fuzzy and familiar, these blue-yellow colours. ; )
Just got a sudden wake up call and thought I'd check FK. Signing in after a long while. Great to see most of the oldies are still around!
Keep rocking everyone! :)
First time I saw it back in October or November 1999 I said it was the worst idea I had ever seen. Guess I was wrong :)
Actually I remember being in Sydney way back on 9/11 and the servers were based in NYC. The site was slow but it was very moving to interact with people on the ground experiencing the tragedy up close and personal.
