So, what's next? People on that bus with BO? How about women wearing perfume? Personally, I think women should not be allowed to practice chemical warfare on men in the workspace. Not only are most perfumes stinking cheap immitations of organic flowers, but many of them are noxious and damn irritating by the first coffee break. Many smell like nothing so much as Black Flag, the insect killer. I'd rather smell a good pipe smoke residue on someones clothes any day.

Face it, your just a complainer, and smokers are the easiest target to vent your frustration on. You couldn't name a person who ever died of second hand smoke inhalation if your own life depended on it, so why use it in an arguement?

Im sure your in a minority of perfume haters. Im not in a minority you see, the only people that tolerate smokey environments are smokers.
And for your information, a friend of mines Grandfather died of lung cancer and hadnt smoked in his life. His wife however had been a smoker since she was 12. Maybe it wasnt the smoke that caused the cancer, but you cant tell me that it helped at all, even after she had quit when he was diagnosed.
And anyway, the reason for me not wanting people smoking in public is not primarily so i dont die, its because i hate the smell of smoke and dont want my clothes etc. smelling like it.

Well, at least your honest about it. Your not hiding the fact that it's just a matter of you imposing your will over someone else and calling it a god given right. In the mean time, could you stand downwind with your fish and chips, boozy smelling, rotting teeth halitosis and the garlic odor coming from your unwashed armpits, and please, when you breathe that foul odor, would you take it outside? Cause you see, I don't like it and I have rights.

And I hardly think I am in a minority when it comes to women wearing a quart of stinking perfume inside a small room, or even a bus, for that matter. It's just that most men are too polite to say so. To say nothing of that time of month when they smell like a cess pit and their breath has that rusty iron odor. I think we need a law to force them out on the sidewalk with that.

don't be ridiculous, I know of no valid comparison to second hand smoke, BO and perfume certainly aren't, they might annoy you but they certainly won't kill you.

This has everything to do with people's rights, not the right to smoke in public, the right of people to go out in public without having their health endangered by selfish addicts.

From a smokers point of view, it's no more ridiculous than a law that effectively places at least a quarter of the population in second class citizen status. And BTW, many perfumes do make my gag reflex kick in, so it's a real thing. But my cynicism comes from hard facts though. To name a few, of the recent billions snatched from American tobacco companies, not a cent has trickled down to the victims of smoking or their families, in many places where smoking bans were passed into law, the laws are now being ignored, you only have to go out and look around to see it, it's all about money and control, nothing else.

As far as I'm concerned, a simple no smoking sign would have done just as much to prevent smoking in certain areas than a blanket law that doesn't work and pisses off a large percentage of the population.

The way I see it, those who yell the loudest about not smoking around them are in the same family tree as those who had Goodie Barton burned at the stake because she walked by a cow that subsequently dried up, or those who made black people ride the back of the bus and drink from certain water fountains, or wouldn't let Indians vote. They see an opportunity to use the law to impose their will on others they don't like and they use it.

You say it's about peoples rights, yet you really mean it's about your rights. Out in public belongs to me just as much as it does you, yet you want, no demand, that others don't have certain rights. I have as much right to smoke in the open air as you do to stand upwind of the smoke. And as long as there are so many other pollutants in that air that are harmful, your demands border on the ridiculous to me.

You have exactly the same rights as I do in public. The right not to be poisoned by other smokers.

No one is trampling on your rights by telling you not to smoke in a place where other people are gathered, that's such a spurious argument. I might as well say that I have the right to fire guns in public and you have the right to get out of the way of the bullet.

Smoking is banned/outlawed in places where people gather not in the open air. It's hard to stand down wind of someone in a bar!

Rights are for the good of the majority, not the fatal addictions of the few.

there's plenty of evidence that pollution harms us all, and there are plenty of people trying to do something about it. Just like there's plenty of evidence smoking is harmful and there are plenty of people trying to do something about that too.

What next, you'll tell me to stop driving a car because of carbon monoxide posioning? Yes that's another good one too isn't it? Stupid though, not that I drive or own a car but smoking is something you do willingly, you chose to smoke and many smokers chose to smoke around aother people. Cars are not the same thing, neither is running a central heating system or using electricity...

Yes, I have a family BTW, and if you were reading my posts instead of just coming off with your knee jerk reation to a few posts, you'd know that I smoke only in my own bathroom, near the window, and leave my butts at home when I go out. I ask periodically if anyone in the house can smell the smoke and they can't. Neither do they go out of there way to make me feel like some low life second class citizen because I smoke.

that's nice man, while these aren't knee jerk reactions, I haven't read this whole thread. My reactions, as usual, are to your extremism, such as comparing people who complain about smokers to racists and fascists.

I didn't assume you did smoke in public, I deliberately avoided saying so, but the fact that you don't smoke around your family suggests that you understand why non-smokers don't want smokers in their places of work or where they socialise.

I have no arguement with any of the facts you or anyone else here has pointed out about smoking or the effects on those who don't. All through this thread, I've tried to make it clear that cramming laws down peoples throats is not the way to get them to stop smoking or to take it outside. That last bit about not smoking within 6 meters of a public building or on any beach in the state ought to make even your hair stand on end. Because if they really get away with it, what's next, water fountains and busses for certain folks? Laws like that do not help society when they are binding to 1/3rd of a population.

I know you're a responsible smoker but the fact is a lot aren't. It doesn't matter how many signs or requests people put up there's always people who ignore them. It's part of the nature of smoking I suppose, it's an addiction and some people find it hard to act with all due consideration to other people. There comes a point where, to protect the health of people in offices, public transport and other places you have to resort to a law.

Any time there is a law that tells people what to do it is because of a failure of society to work something out itself. From gun control to anti-pollution laws it's common enough. I agree it's a shame and I regret the necessity but in this case I have to say I support the laws if smokers, and it has to be 90% of smokers, don't use their common sense and smoke with consideration.

Well, when you get back, I'd love to hear your thoughts on all those billions taken from tobacco companys using the argement that it was for all the loss of life and hardship to smokers and their families, yet none of the money found it's way to those people. Perhaps you can see why I am cynical about the whole encilada? :)

Perhaps you've been so accustomed to smoking that you don't realize the difference between passing cars, and some dude next to you puffing fumes in you face. I'll tell you now, there is one, trust me.

Health risks aside, it still smells, and its a hell of a lot more noticeable and annoying than passing cars and busese.

Unless the nurses in the hospital you were born in blew smoke in your face, even you have been breathing car spewed fumes longer than cigarette smoke. If someone next to you is blowing smoke in your face, tell him to stop, then try telling a driver to turn off his engine. Both fumes are equally deadly. My point was that it's easier for you to hate the guy smoking, cause you don't, than it is to hate the car driver, because you drive too, even though both fumes are killing you.
