hey guys amazinstuff still going on, haven;t posted here for awhile, but need to make the effort!
Olly those canvases are so freakin cool! btw where are u getting ur vinyl toys from, i wanna get into it! :)
Nice one nayades! I agree with Mags they could do with beeing a little more puffy but I don't know how difficult that would be I've never worked with soft toys.
Yojo I love your spongebob figure! Those watercolours are nice too, they remind me off the initial colour tests that Pixar do :)
Xup, thanks man! There's loads of sites you can get vinyl toys from but sometimes it can be expensive so you got to look around. My favourite place is www.tokyotoystore.co.uk, real fast delivery and very friendly people!
www.vinylboutique.co.uk who are good for stuff to collect rather than paint over because they can be more expensive, they specialise in Pete Fowler stuff.
But sometimes for the sake of a little extra wait it's best to go to american websites and abuse the dollar to pound exchange rate :D
www.myplasticheart.com
www.ningyoushi.com
www.kidrobot.com - I wouldn't recommend these guys for anyone out of the usa, their shipping prices are ridiculas! O_O
A nice website for news on the stuff is www.vinylabuse.com :)
And here are a couple of customised toys I have been working on:
Cerebus The Aadrvark:
painted onto an 8" 'Dunny', commissioned

Stitch:
Also painted onto and 8" 'Dunny', commissioned
http://aim2win.bizland.com/okideas/o...titch/box1.jpg
Swamp Knuckles:
painted onto 2" 'Knuckle Qees'
http://aim2win.bizland.com/okideas/o...swamp-wood.jpg
I did quite a few colour variations of these guys aswell which was fun :)
hey Olly those toys look abso freaking lutly cool especially the cerberus little dude , still dont understand how you make them ,is it plastic? do you mold them yourself ? what's a 8" 'Dunny'??
I think he buys the toys and paints/customizes them. am I right olly?
anyway, what's the technique you use to paint them? spray paint? that doesn't look like a brush's job.
anyway, I think toony wanted to know how to get into designing your own models, contacting the vinyl company, etc, etc.
about the softtoys:
they are quite puffier in fact. it's not chopped rubber but the kind of foam you use in pillows. the problem is that because I push it in by hand it's not easy to keep the same level of puffyness all around, and that makes very subtle different bumps. you can't almost notice them qhen you have them in your hands thou.
Cool nayades you should join the KidRobot.com forums they have people there who make their own plush and soft toys aswell :)
Mags. An 8" Dunny is a plastic(vinyl) model that I buy from one of the links in my last post, I don't make them myself. They come with designs on already by artists such as David Horvath - www.uglydolls.com, Dalek - www.dalekart.com and Gary Baseman, and are printed in limited numbers to make them collectable. They are a basic rabbit-ish shape that different artists can apply their own designs too. KidRobot produces them and occasionally they do a mini 2" series which they invite artists to make designs for which will be produced in large numbers and sold 'blind boxed', so you don't know which ones you will get.
Though lots of people like to paint over them like myself and create our own designs. I use Citadel Miniatures paints, all brushwork, you can get them from Games Workshop and places that sell 'Warhammer', they are specially designed acylic paints to give thin and even coats.
On the Cerbus Dunny I used a two-part epoxy clay called Milliput, really wierd stuff, which I moulded onto the 'Dunny' and then sanded down and painted. The sword is made of milliput aswell.
I hope that makes sense, I guess the best way to understand is to look at the links and visit the forums and stuff. :)
If you are looking at getting your own figures made, which I am, unless you have the money to invest yourself then it's creating an original design and getting yourself noticed by companies like www.wheatywheat.com, www.flyingcat.com and www.adfunture.com. I'm still learning about this bit, best person to ask would be Horvath on the boards here. He's a big name in the vinyl toy industry now!
thanks for the info olly
now that you said it I can tell the piggy's nose is handmade. but i wouldn't have been able to spot it out without your comments.
hair is seamless though. great work.
I'll have a look at those citadel paints... I thought they worked on miniatures only.

Looking good Mel, just checking out your blog :)
Ah for goodness sake Mel why are you so damn good at drawing people!!! I like the lady with tentacle arms especially. I really got to sit down and do some life drawing properly soon, but I always end up drawing creatures lol. Speaking of which that beast at the top is fantastic!
Nayades, their just a specially thin form of acrylic paints. They are designed for mini figures because normal acrylic fills in all the little details but they will work on anything really :)
I did a mini Dunny for my Dad, tis his birthday today he liked it thankfully! :):
