Wow tony's here. Tony, As everboody said they have one question, I do too. (Come on one more to go...).
Is there, by any means, any chance that Eric will surf the forums too? I see pixelranger around quite a bit, and you too. But is there any possibility that eric (the great) comes here?
I had booked a flight to come to your party too, just so I can meet him, unfortunately for me though, plane delay made a mess(What do you expect. Its new zealand after all. $2700 went down the drain). I just can't wait to see the release of Propod, heard rumours they might have a party then too. Hopefully if EJ comes there, Ill come over a week earlier...
Oh and yeah, I have those qualifications, maybe I should give it a shot. But i'd rather design than develop. It's quite unbeleivable having one of the worlds best designer from the worlds best (no doubt) design studio actually come here.
Makemedie. Big big big big big big oh allright big*as high as it goes fan of 2Advanced.
If you want that book, you can save a dollar AND get an autographed copy if you buy it from 2A (you'll note that 2A is listed as a co-author of the book).Quote:
Eric seems to post more frequently at ultrashock than here.Quote:

I haven't seen anyone but shane post here since the v4 launch. (Tony got quiet. Odd.)
You can add Australian company Spike to that (wheer I worked for a year before resigning), who at one stage were THE big boys in Asia Pacific, raised $42 million on the stock exchange, and then proceeded to piss that all up against the wall with no workable business plan at all.Quote:

The corporate mission of building a sustaining design centric company with some 2000+ employees and unreal revenue is just ridiculous. Evidenced by the failures or eminent failures of nearly EVERY single one of them: March First, IXL, Organic, Agency.com, Tanning, Sapient, Proxicom, US Internetworking, Rare Medium, and Razorfish (just to name a few).
Their idea was to become the online "youth brand of the world", and had a US based online radio station at one stage with some big bucks gong in.
But all completely unsustainable with their business practices. As Tony said, lots of false promises.
Is this a coffee lounge thread?

So what are the guidelines for running a design-centric firm? Can it really be done today?
Personally, I think you'd have to go beyond the web and do ALL forms of design from video to print to web and so on.
wow, talk about resurrecting the dead.
I'll build your site for a cheeseburger.Quote:

Does anyone know if there's a tool out there that will let you define your own price/hr, and number of hours per task, and once you finish a questionire like the one above your price, and number of hours will be automatically calculated.Quote:

Ahahaha. Listen everyone this is getting a little vague here. There are SO many factors that influence and dictate pricing:
-Is it a Fixed bid job or Time and Materials?
-When do you need delivery by?
-New Project, Facelift Project, or Major Overhaul?
-How many pages of content are we talking about?
-Any dynamic content feeds? Database? XML Streams?
-Do you need our staff onsite at your facilities?
-Hybrid of Flash and HTML, only HTML, or only Flash?
-Flash Navigation, or the ability to switch between both?
-Administrative tools for performing updates?
-How many graphics?
-Do you have your own graphics?
-Do you want to license Stone images or Comstock images?
-Who is responsible for integration?
-Is your content written, or do you need a copywriter?
-Is this site going to be in English only, or do we need International translations?
-Who's building the back-end?
-Is our company producing the solution, or will we be working in concert with your team?
...
(etc, etc, etc.)
Every single question above and over 100+ others must be answered in order to effectively determine "price". Skill of the firm, customer demand, production efficencies, and related will help you determine an hourly rate. But at the end of the day you don't ask the right questions you may determine that you can do the project in 20 hours and it will end up taking 100 hours. By my calculations that $50 per hour just worked out to be $10 per hour (much less after taxes).
My suggest is this:
1. Determine the entire scope of work first.
2. Determine the client budget for the project.
3. Provide the client with a realistic scope of work that you can do which fits the budget.
(Sorry for the rambling...)
I could develop a spreadsheet, but I don't want to re-invent the wheel. Somebody outthere must have already thought of this.
Anyone?
thanks in advance
