It's just that people who don't live in Austin and think they know things will tell you that Austin is some sort of tech mecca, which it is not, at least not for some years now.

ahhh yes dallas.. that's the puppy. I knew it was somewhere down there. BTW, if you're bored in austin this weekend and like interesting documentaries, check out "the revolution will not be televised" about the overthrow of chavez in venezuela, it's showing at the paramount theatre and probably won't get a general release, so it might be the only chance you get.

speaking as someone who's never been to austin, its profile is rapidly rising, I hear about it more and more in all fields, cultural mainly.

speaking of good flicks, you all should go see the Pianist if its in theaters near you. Best picture of the year without a doubt. so sad yet so beautiful in parts.

ahhh... I love documentaries but alas, this weekend is the weekend of SXSW (music) so downtown will be utter hell and I dare not venture there.

in other news SXSW (interactive) had nominated WHOSWE as a finalist in "best company" category of their web awards. They didn't win but I'm also forced to mark another major award/competition off my list of relevancy (along with FLASHFORWARD where they won!) Bleeurggh!

but that's funny about austin gaining profile...well it is quite pretty in places, and if you're a naive college student/grad it's a great place to stage a protest. Yay!

oh and I've spent part of today reading about what a monster polanski is. I still want to see the movie but he belongs/belonged in prison.

yeah, I have seen it and loved it, it's one of those films people avoid because it's depressing, and while it is 'depressing' I think there's so much energy to be gained from watching a great film, going to the cinema isn't a process of osmosis, people miss out on so many great films because they think they're depressing. Great cinema is great cinema.

I just saw 'the good thief' which was a cracking little heist film.

so many people have been saying that the pianist should be judged by its merits, not on polanski's history, but I think it's unavoidable, he did rape a child and has been convicted in the states, no amount of art merits his liberty.

I agree, where Polanski deserves some prison time and should not have been granted asylum out of the US, he is yet a great Director and visionary. Maybe he should get into website design? (I just said that to bring around the topic :))

Man, it's too bad FOX isn't in charge of the Academy Awards...they could invite him...award him the oscar...and then while he's giving his pompous acceptance speach JOE MILLIONAIRE could run out and tackle him and drag him to prison!

And then maybe america could vote on who would be roman's new boyfriend.

I wonder if in the event that polanski does win an oscar they would dare put him on a satellite feed from france so he can say something like, 'thanks for this award I'm sorry I can't be there but I'm a convicted paedophile on the run....' God I hope not, it was bad enough when they did that at the BAFTAs (the british awards), he was on a ski slope with his teenage daughter, it was creepy.
