As far as the 'casual request' vs. 'flower & a note' debate, it doesn't have to be one idea or the other. A single approach isn't going to work with/for everyone. So it's not really a fair comparison since every single person in the world is going to be at least somewhat unique in their response to any given situation.
It's also pretty much impossible to get an accurate assessment of how someone will react when you are presenting the choices 'on paper'. Whether you just casually ask a woman out or if you decide to go the more romantic route and do it with a note and flower, it's all going to be in the delivery. Some people could carry it off, and some couldn't. And yeah, if you just walked up to someone, dumped a flower and note in their lap then asked them if they wanted to go out, you would likely face a quick refusal. It could be done with enough charm and flair though, that you would be creating a memory of a first encounter that could be shared with your children.
