does anyone know what Materazzi said to Zidane?

Zidane, apparently, is blaming something Materazzi said for provoking him, no one else knows what. But it's just a cop out, who cares what Materazzi said, in football everything has been said to provoke opponents, it's a constant stream of digs and insults. Zidane is the only one to blame for the assault, it doesn't matter what was said, he lost it and physically assaulted another player, he deserved to be sent off.

He's been one of the world's greatest players but now he'll always be remembered for this, for letting his country down.

Just watched the incident on youtube, looks like the only person consolling him after he got the card was the Italian keeper, buffon. Weird.

Just had a French reporter on the telly, seems like it wasn't racism but just a plain 'ole "yo momma" type jibe that pushed him over the edge.

What Matarazzi didn't know is that Zidane's mother is seriously ill right now, imagine that you're stressed about a huge game like this, worried about your mother and then some idiot calls her a whore right in your face. Unless you're in that situation I dont think you can say how you'd react.

I dont see it as so bad, they lost because Trezeguet missed his pen. End of.

At the end of the day people who love and know their football will always remember ZZ for his grace, skill and just being a joy to watch....not for the headbutt.

What I find interesting is that even after Zidane gave him the head butt, the majority French fans continued to boo Italy every time they got the ball. Speaking of, why were there so many French fans compared to Italian fans? They are both next door to Germany and we know Italy is obsessed with the game, so why weren't they there?

BBC's italian "lip reader", he said something like this

"We all know that you're a son of a terrorist whore." and "I hopethat you and your family will suffer a painful death and go to hell".

It's also a theory that he said something bad about Zidane's previous coach, who died of cancer just before the world cup...

But Zidane will tell his agent his version of the story in one of the coming days, and we might get to know what happened.

Rubbish! They lost because of the coach and zidane... if the coach hadn't taken Henry off and Ziddy had stayed on, that would have been two pennas that they would have scored! (Even if Zidane did almost fluff his earlier penelty).

Why the hell did he take Henry off so close to pens? Even if he is injured, he can hang back, not make runs and wait it out till he takes his kick.

Knowing the story behind the headbutt I do kind of feel sorry for Z. Its something he shouldn't have done, but I can now see why he did it.

But the only pen France missed was Trezeguet's. Its not like Zidane would have replaced him as pen taker, headbutt/sending off or no sending off Trez still would have taken a pen and still missed.

The greatest show on earth is over. All in all it was an interesting world cup.
Especially in the group stages - we were treated to some vintage attacking football resulting in a flurry of goals. But sadly in the knockout stage the coaches took over resulting in Defensive football with hardly any goals and most of the games went to penalties.

It would have been great if some Latin American team like Brazil or Argentina would have reached the semis, or even some African team would have been good. The two best European teams playing attacking football - Holland and Czech. Republic also went out and we got to see boring football in the semis. and finals.

Its a long wait till the next world cup !!!
