anyway, i knew Olli, once you got constructive on your side I would look differently at you. I think I am an arrogant pompus etc... if my attitude is talk down to anyone I think is below me. My words and assumptions were there to illustrate my feelings. 99% are amateurs, ?, maybe, its my guess from what the point of what I would consider an amateur. I do think the industry is flooded with crap!, but I certainly dont intend to insult you or anyone else, if you read it that way fine. Out of all the posters here, you are the only one that trolled through here, similar to the way you may bash a successful firm such as us or 2A for no reason what so ever. Its typical in all boards and not right.
As for the Propod thing, I would be a cheap arrogant pompus then I guess....no really, it just fitted in after this thread went on further than I thought it would.
Listen, the whole FI team are going off Skiing/snowboarding tonight for one week for a total jackass vacation, im really looking forward to it, and there I will discuss with everyone in the team about this thread after a few beers, and see what opinions we come up with...actually the MTV Jackass serious was filmed on our street 2 days ago..

Have a good time skiing/snowboarding Dave. Just snowed 2 feet here in Washington, DC and I will be going skiing one of these days as well. Let us know what the rest of the FI team thinks about the thread topic if you want. I'm sure we are all ears.Quote:

I've done no bashing whatsoever, just took what you wrote the wrong way I guess, but turned it into a more humourous note to end with.Quote:

I respect your company and you as a designer, and have a very high regard for the work that you do. I just think you could have handled this a bit better that's all. In the end you're only human and so emotions can run high on subjects you're sensitive about, fair play.
Have a good vacation. :)
fair play to you too...!Quote:

thank gawd for that, now everyone bugger off and have a good weekend, even if some of us won't spend it skiing!
there is a busy spanish bar near here though
;)
Olli_Budworth - Have you seen the Portfolio section of the said site? I think when you look at the subnavigation with the swooshing line with the angle at the end , The way you scroll thru work..etc.. you can see that part is waay more than inspired. I get the feeling like you just went to the splash & homepage.
Nevil - I respect you but I dont think you of all people should talk about pimping things. You've even started topics in this section specifically about your flash store etc. I mean..I would too if that was my means of income but dont point at David when you have 4 fingers pointing back at yourself.
To sum up my feelins on this topic. If people do not know that something like this..is COMPLETELY WRONG... they will continue to do it. Its like the rule about where you are supposed to post a URL in the topic of this section of the board.. Is it enforced? No. Do people do it? Seldom. All you get is "HEY COOL SITE" or like this one "Saw this in SITE CHECK!!!" if Aversion or someone hammered down on it and really enforced it do you think it would become a norm? Sure. Just go look at the Bombshock section of Ultrashock.com You know what you are getting. My point is...until stuff like this is enforced..with no quarter, people will continue to build these OVER inspired sites. Its very easy to say "Oh that is the best compliment of your work you can get". Well..i can tell you..you probably haven't had it happen to you then. When you see it, your heart sinks...your jaw drops..and you feel like CRAP that someone took what you did and belittled it and hacked it apart.
If 1 or 2 or 3 or more people on this board have to come across VERY HARSH on the matter to get the point across. then so be it. If someone was SCARED OFF by all this, then good they shouldn't be doing such a thing in the first place and if they do, they will think twice about it. The point is..people need to know what is right or wrong..bottom line. Sometimes we can't all sit around holding hands singing happy songs. I'm a football coach as one of my jobs. The way I handle things...if you suck at something..or a technique..i'm gonna tell you straight up about it...if you ripped something..i'm gonna tell you. Its the only way people without a doubt learn in my experience.
Anyway..Have a great weekend everyone :)
Shane

oh, I didn't know it was my fault that people built over-inspired sites because I don't enforce the rule that people have to post URLs in the topic.Quote:

Christ, here we go again.
I’m not taking sides here, but I think although pixel ranger and David have a valid point about copying. I think they have explained themselves in the wrong way. For example, pixel ranger just then was making his statement on what he thought of the thread (nothing wrong with that), but for some reason felt that a dig at Nevil was in order (which I thought was unfair). That was just an example, but I feel that the points have been made in the wrong way by some people, and other have been dragged down because of it.
This post probably won’t make much sense to people, coz its 1 of them things I understand in my mind, but I just can’t explain it lol.
Ritchie.
The problem is, how does one enforce something like this? The moderator would have to contact each member individually and question them about the motive behind their rip. These members could simply say that the never intended to use the website rip commercially, rather they were just trying to see if they could mimic 2A (which even you say is acceptable). There's a real blurry area. Are these people sellig services, or simply experimenting? I just don't see this as being enforceable, although I am sure that Aversion would be more than happy to volunteer to do so. :DQuote:

What about Flashlevel taking swipes when his site and his latest portfolio site (linotravel) are obviously overly inspired by 2A and FI. I think it's the nature of the business. The rips will continue and there's really no way to police it.Quote:

to clarify this
it's not my fault people design over-inspired sites, I don't think that was shane's intention, I hope.
it isn't a rule of this forum that the topics must contain the URL of the site in question, only that the topic shold be descriptive.
having said that I'm going to talk to the other mods of this forum and see if it's not a good idea. I don't want to restrict people to saying nothing but the URL but maybe it should be at least included in your topics.
I'll get back to y'all about it.
I'm sure he was kidding, like I was.Quote:

Man....this thread got pretty crazy. I doubt that the creator of this site had any idea it would start up a discussion like this. :)
I myself am completely a hobbiest, so you can take my comments as unqualified if you wish.
A portfolio/design site should be a representation of your OWN ideas and creativity, period. It's a lie to yourself and your client to take the creative works of someone else and exploit them for your own financial gain. There are many cases where people can be inspired by aspects of sites and include variations of those aspects in their own work in a respectable manner. However, when elements of a site are copied in such a frequency or exactness that they are blatently copying a site, the designer should be held accountable.
On the other hand, I find no fault in people copying sites for the sole purpose of learning and building new techniques....just so long as those sites aren't used for profit and credit is given to the original creator. I remember spending hours when I first started with flash trying to copy the menu from eStudio (BlitzDS now).
Once these skills are developed though....think for yourself and come up with a unique design. You'll feel much better about it.
Peace!
