This better be a joke... or an yet-to-be updated list...

A REPORT FROM German site Cynamite has given us our first glimpse of the new backwards compatibility software emulation within the European Playstation 3.
Sony announced over a week ago that the European version of the PS3 would not feature hardware-based backwards compatibility in the form of the PS2's Emotion Engine.
This is despite both the Japanese and American versions of the console featuring the chip. These therefore offer a significantly high degree of backwards compatibility.
Cynamite has managed to get its hands on a European PAL PS3 prior to the official launch date, and has begun performing backwards compatibility testing.
The list of games tested are claimed by Cynamite to be the top-twelve PS2 software titles, and are listed as followed:
# God of War
# MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
# MGS 3: Snake Eater
# Shadow of the Colossus
# Guitar Hero 2
# Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones
# Okami
# GTA: Liberty City Stories
# Eragon
# Final Fantasy X-2
# Ratchet & Clank 3
# Lumines Plus
Its reported that only ONE of these twelve games operates properly - Eragon. All other titles refused to run, and referred the user to future software updates and the Sony Website to read the downward compatibility list.
It's possible that this console hasn't received the latest firmware patch destined for European consoles on release (it was reported to be running 1.50), but if it is the case that the PS3 backwards compatibility will be performing as badly as this, then European gamers will be in uproar.
Most likely an old firmware as this looks like not even close to the stated >1000 games. But the real question is, why is Eragon a top twelve game?

Not scientific nor accurate; however via Amazon.com/Amazon.co.uk, Eragon had pretty damn high sales compared against other PS2 titles. Which amazes me actually.
1 game... 999 to go. And the release is when? Looks like yet another buy then update once you plug it up from Sony. Again.
Microsoft did the same for BC, Nintendo ... well, they more or less just overclocked the Gamecube, so that comparision isn't exactly fair.Quote:

It's just quite hilarious that Sony said they'd not do that... and still somehow did.
A year later after the 360.
Live and learn?
Nope. A year later, they do it again in Europe too.
This is getting a bit repetitive.
Wow and I used to think microsoft just wanted to take gamers money, looks like sony is the only one focused on the dollar now.
Ok, FW 1.5 isn't the one upposed to release with the PS3 in Europe. FW 1.6 will be the one inluding BC for the European market.

There was lots of other interesting information revealed too, probably a bit too much to take in but Phil did state that the number of working BC titles on the newer PS3 hardware is now at 1200 and rising steadily

Confirmed updates:
* PS1/PS2 Compatability with EU PS3 systems.
* Background Downloading (exact details of this are not confirmed)
* Remote play through WAN
I dont care about backward compatibilty, I didnt buy a next=gen console so I could play my old games, I brought it so I could play the new ones. As for the PS3's "Amazing" graphics, they are pretty omparable to XBOX 360's and 360 has an easier to use dashboard, is cheaper and has a great online community and plus doesnt cost loads of money. To be honest I dont really care about Blueray, PS has made nothing but boring and linear games since the PS2 was released and any good games could be brought on xbox or 360
Let's hope that 1.6 fixes the problems with 1.54... shame to have your Blu-Ray stop working due to an update.Quote:

Problematic updates... check for both systems.
Trouble upscaling and downgrades to 480p... PS3 only (check).

Troublesome power supply... 360 only (check)

Limited blockbuster games... both systems check.

They fix the jagged edges on emulation though? No EE hardware means they're pegging the CELL emulation via all software...
I have no concrete infos on that, but with emulation that's certainly a possibility, that and upscaling to 1080p.

Man if you don't come out of the gate BC, I wouldn't want you waisting any more time on it. Get the games flying off the shelve so the damn console price can drop.
oh and
http://www.technewsworld.com/story/S...-the-One.xhtml
bingo. it was a mistake when Microsoft did it and the Sony fans went nuts about it. To downplay that Sony did the same exact thing is pretty telling on how... well, how they see things.Quote:

Should be the same - since it was advertised as such - for the PS3 or 360.
It ain't.
I'll be waiting on this generation of vid games systems to shake out and finalize. Nothing is compelling to me yet.
Oh... Subby... 1080p scaling for PS2 games? 480i games, like Final Fantasy X still don't work well to this day. And that's with hardware in Japan and US that have the EE inside of them. Doubtful it'll allow scaling up to 1080p from 480i when they've not got scaling past 720p or playing at 1080i finalized yet. This 1.6 doesn't patch that problem from what it seems.
Bingo. No emulation, no upscaling. The hardware solution has a fixed set of output possibilities, software emulation on the other hand should be able to output whatever you teach it to do.Quote:

They could have done that from the very beginning and saved money to themselves at least and avoided the complexity of including the PS2/PS1 hardware in the US/Japan hardware and just invested into better software from the very beginning and updated regularly - you know, I actually HATE hearing that my consoles are due for upgrades, if I wanted upgrades to offer me more options, I'd bought a gaming PC instead - and done this all right from the beginning.Quote:

Hell... all three machines have CPU's built by IBM, multiple cores in 360 and PS3... based off of the PowerPC architecture... starting to see too many similarities in them too.
They both waited to late to figure out the best path for backward compatibility and haven't really delivered more than a handful of graphical demos... I mean games that are worth a crap.
