I also use stock when appropriate, but I also rely on my trusty little digital camera and scanner to do most of the work for me.
I carry my digital with me at all times just in case I see something that catches my eye. You never know when you'll be walking, riding or driving around and just see something that inspires you. And never underestimate what a scanner, a variety of different types of paper, and art supplies can do as well.
Same goes for me, mostly stock photo.

ok was considering taking fruitloops challange in his new thread, but dont have time to assign to it, so I took my inspiration from his image and followed on from save_larry's image.

believe or not, i took the mountian rock from last image, which is the greyed out part top right of my image that covers the eyeball.
Ack, no comments on mine. I take it that's a bad sign. Tell me what I did wrong!
save_larry, your image is good but is a bit bland, needs a little uummpphhff...

Thanks, Kaco. It does need more umph. I had more I wanted to put in, but I lack the Photoshop skills. I guess this is where I learn.

How do so many of you get such vivid colors even after saving as a jpg? Is it something to do with how you set your pallette?

Not that I'm a long-timer here (actually just started myself) but you do have to include part of the previously posted image as well as adhere to the pixel dimension (landscape or portrait) and file size. Not sure you did that at all in your currently posted image.

Check out the rest of the battle (Open battle) Every image has the same size and includes something of the previous image posted, but anyway, welcome to the arena Jafit. :)

Freddy77, since you've asked for a critique directly, I'll give you one for your image... mind you, this is merely my opinion, and nothing else.
standard disclaimer: I'm avoiding getting targeted again for hate mail for giving my opinion on an image, even when I was asked...
The first thing that hits me is the usage of filters. Mind you, I have sorta built up a dislike of filters since I've been using Photoshop for way too long - since version 2.5 ya'll.
But the colors seem a bit muddy; dark colours are cool, especially if the palette is sharp and tight, but everything has a bit of a grey tint to it - like there's a slight issue with either contrast or there's a grey layer mixed in.
The lightning and eyes is a good concept. I like that part immensely. The faces being masked out as they were though makes it a bit spooky, but it also draws attention to the layer masks. They could have been done a bit better, imho.
The clouds in the background are a bit pixelated, and the red swirl gets lost - I would have loved to have seen that pulled up a bit in detail, and made to "glow" a bit like it was giving off light/heat.
The text, while fitting the mood, is a bit hard to read. I swore there was a "r" where there is a "n"...
But, all in all, it's a well thought out piece. Just the execution was a bit rushed. Can understand though... this is the Kung-Fu Battle. I hope you see that I'm not saying it's a bad piece, but overall, it just lacked a bit of clarity and detail.
