my domain is on virtual hosting type thing, so I guess this means it doesn't have an IP??

Are these XML dealies you are talking about availiable anywhere to dload? Are they easy to setup?

Just to confirm, what IP do I put in the chat.swf?

i got a SMC Barricade router, and i cant seem to find anywhere to input both external and internal ports. i have these options:
DHCP Server
Virtual Server
Special Aplications
Access Control

if u know which one i should choose, please help me. :cow:

PS i noticed an ip address in the router main menu that is not my routers and none of my comps. might that be the external ip?

Because of a Flash player security feature, a SWF loaded from one IP cannot connect to a socket server running on another IP without something that is called a "policy file".

A policy file is an XML file that has to have the name "crossdomain.xml". This file must exist in the root directory of the IP/domain to which the socket server is bound.

That said, and for a little background information for anyone else reading, here is *your* current situation.

- You are running ElectroServer 3 from your own PC, which has an IP address of XX.XX.XX
- You are serving the Chat.swf file from your domain (stylishdesign.co.uk)

So, in order for the SWF file to connect to XX.XX.XX, it must be able to load the http://XX.XX.XX/crossdomain.xml.

The SWF file will automatically try to load this XML file, you do not have to tell it to.

What you *have* to do, is:
1) Put the XML file on your computer in a certain location (which I'll explain)

and

2) Enabled the ElectroServer 3 web server....which is enabled by default when you install it.

One other note before I explain #'s 1 and 2 above. Policy files (this XML file) were introduced with Flash player 7. So you must have the Flash 7 player installed.

Ok, explanation of #1:

Create a file called crossdomain.xml (a text file) with this as contents:

The the first "allow-access" line should give access to your domain. The second one gives access to all domains. Delete that line if you want to.

Take that file and place it here:
C:\Program Files\Electrotank\ElectroServer 3\webserver-root\

Explanation of #2:

Open configuratin.xml in the ElectroServer 3 installation directory. Look for this node:

Make sure Enabled it True as above. Change the IP to match that of the IP you are binding to (so in your case its your internal IP). Change the port to 80. Save the file.

Then try starting your server!

So what should happen when you star the server is this:
-The server will start and listen for connections on your internal IP and the port you specified
-The server will start a tiny web server which will listen for requests on port 80 (the standard web server port). Requests will be made to load the crossdomain.xml file

Remember to do port forwarding for the web server too just like you did for the chat part of the server.

In your SWF connect to XX.XX.XX (well, your actual socket server IP), on the port on which you started it. Then embed the SWF in the HTML page as you did before, just on your norml stylishdesign.co.uk web site.

When the SWF is loaded into an HTML page, it will see that it is supposed to connect to a socket server at XX.XX.XX. The Flash player will think "hmm, that is a different domain than me. I have to load the crossdomain.xml file to see if I'm allowed to do this". The Flash player will pull the crossdomain.xml file, interpret it, and then connect to the socket server.


This is a lot of info I know. Just for clarification, this has nothing to do with ElectroServer 3 per se, it applies to all socket servers and Flash.

im confused now. u said port 80 but in the code it says 8080. is that the same thing?

Webgamehost is only like $18/month or something like that. I'm not sure if you'll find anyone cheaper.

Do a search for Tiga Host, I think that they would host it too. I think they are out of China or something and are cheap.

To answer your question:
Lets assume your networks external IP is 63.74.105.23, and your internal IP pointing your specific PC is 196.98.104

In the configuration.xml file, the chat is set to bind to 196.98.104.

In the SWF file, you specify that you want to connect to 63.74.105.23.

Both the config file and the SWF file specify the same port.

The router must have port forwarding. It must forward everything on that specific port (9875 is the default, if you didnt change it) to 196.98.104

The web server must be set to bind to 196.98.104 on port 80.

just wanted to say that it works outside my comp too. i didnt change the ip or set any port forwarding, but still it works.
