Pixel WAR!!!

For the time limit of the animation of the sprite i will make it a considerable amount longer then what you had for the actuall drawing of the sprite. Simply due to the fact that some people havent animated a sprite before and would like to learn a little more before entering their sprite. Any suggestions on what the time limit should be?

mbenney : a walk animation will be fine. Im just looking for some sort of movement. I just said attack animation because some people may want to use the character for a Turnbased rpg battle engine. But what ever you want to animate is up to you. But you atleast have to move the characters limbs.

Could everyone please post the picture of their entry to the last round in this thread.

And describe the angle they took to the sprite with the rules.

And the winner isnt decided by me because i think it would be fair if everyone voted rather then just i choose. In my books though everyone that has participated so far is a winner. Even if you havent submitted a sprite and your just helping out you are a winner :) .

Ow one thing i forgot to mention. Your sprite character must remain at the same size but you can increase your stage size an extra 30X30 to cater for the animation.

Right click and save the quicktime movie. Its just the greatest pixel work I've seen in a long time. Amazing tune too! :)

mbenney, Im using photoshop 7. Thats what I made him in so far... just a little lost on proper shading and what not...
any advice or help would be great!

This pixel work is on the video for a great song by Junior Senior called - Move your feet. My favorite track at the moment, it's very cool :)

Did another character today, which is the green gecko lizard thing. i drew this by drawing it in flash first than exporting it as an image and opening it in adobe image ready, then i traced it, the colours just came from the top of my head. :rolleyes:

i like that ninjarette girl,great work,you should team up with squize,get some shading help from him and create a golden axe game featuring your ninjarette and his character.
(not that its an advice,i´d just love a golden axe like game featuring your two characters :) )
i don´t know about that green fella of yours.the proportions don´t seem to fit (the chest plus head is bigger sized than the legs,dunno,looks strange)

@tyler: hmm for shading isnt it all a manual matter? i shaded mine as i would with a pencil

(hm,yesterday i replayed my good old monkey island3 for a while,don´t know if you remember that vodoo mama there,i just love how she talks about the most trivial things in a misterious manner ;) )

yeah fospher,but in older games (the real pixel classics),they didn´t have that many colors,so shading was mostly (if at all) done in two colors.(main body/clothes,one color tone per fill/part and a brighter highlight color (or if not in light a darker shading color).
nowadays it´s coming trendy again with cell shaded graphics in 3d games,which is about the same,only high res.

For fear of being shot down in flames ( And sounding stupid ), can someone give me a definition of what constitutes "pixel art" ?

The styles in this thread seem divided between scans/illustrations ( Such as RipX's warrior girl and strangelife's Ninja girl, both really excellent ) and what I consider to be true pixel art ( RipX's "Space frog" and my re-worked sprite for want of a better example ).

It's just it used to be two distinct forms of art ( Illustration and Pixel Art ) but it seems blurred now. Is anything non-rendered considered pixel art now ?

I'm really not trying to start a row, far from it, I'm just curious.

I would define pixel art as being the art of pixelating an image by hand. All of my images are drawn in PSP7 and not just scanned and resized!

hm,good question,i guess forms are really becoming one,some use pixel by pixel drawing,others scan the pics in and pixelate them afterwards.anyho,i vote for squize´s warrior guy,he could fit perfectly into a classic game (did i say i´d loave a golden axe like game.. ;) )
damn,have to clear up tomorrow,can´t find my scannercable.
(on the one side it has a normal usb port end,but on the side which fits into the scanner it has a special connector end,so ican´t use a standard cable..)
