Maybe a few months in jail (not prison)...and a harsh release program..or something.

a couple things about prison. you really should look at the breakdown of crimes people are serving there on. its not just rapists and murderers. as is seemingly popular, you are also greatly exaggerating what prison is like. of course its not a small punishment to be physically locked up. but, it isn't the hollywood, walk around with a "shank", "gang school", scene that some think it is. just trust me on that one. sending this guy to prison isnt 'risking his life' because he isnt from that 'walk of life'. what are you saying? that only poor people who dont have successful careers deserve to go to prison?

i wouldn't like to spend the next 4 years of my life in prison. i dont have to fear that because i dont steal! and anyway, they dont put software thieves next to murderers. the actual incidences of prison rape is actually very low. probably lower than it is in civilian life per capita.

nobody is pissed about anything here (that i can tell). looks to me like a simple case of the justice system doing its job.

I wouldn't. Stop validating your opinions by accusing everyone else of the offense.

And also, no, it will never me. I don't have to pretend to know what it would be like. I don't understand how some people make it sound so difficult to stay out of trouble. I've never been arrested, let alone sentenced and imprisoned.

you are correct...he would never go to a maximum security prison...I was using extremes.. as others have... but I dont need to take your word on that..I formed my own opinion. And I dont know where you were..are ever have been...but some places have a VERY high gang presence... everyone of course not.

hehe. i havent been to prison myself. but i have known people here and there throughout my life that have been. i also have a close friend who worked as a prison guard for several years. so, ive heard a thing or two about it from both sides of the gate. its no place anyone sane wants to be. but, by far, the typical experience is more like Cool Hand Luke (without the torture) than American Me.

anyway. thats besides the point since you're still removing the responsibility from the convicted. if he goes to prison and then becomes a gang member, thats ALSO his fault. people should always take responsibility for themselves AND be held responsible for themselves. not just hopefully one and then blame society if the other doesn't happen.

meaning.....if you were in the same position (as I think I said.."if it happened to you")...you would have a different opinion about having to go to prison and having a murderer or rapist as a roomie.

I apologize, I thought you were saying "don't give me that crap" because you think everyone does or has committed theft, not because you were asking us to imagine what it would be like going to prison. Again, my apologies.

If in that position, yes, I think it would be horrible. Given the nature of the punishment, and most importantly being so remote from the rest of society, I would probably be very afraid. Note, however, that it is hard for me to imagine myself there, though I could imagine how dire the situation would be.

Rehabilitation works. However it only works when the individual applies themselves
starting with accepting the responsibilites of thier actions and understanding the implications of thier actions not only to themselves but also twards the victum and society.

If rehabilitation didn't work then the prisons would be much much more overcrowded then they already are. The stigmatism of commiting a crime can last one's life time.
(unless your Martha Stewart) Making it extremely hard to enter the work world. Without a job that pays the bills one is more likely to commit a crime as they have no alternatives left.

Abilities do not always equate to success in web design. It takes much much more to be a successful designer then design skills. Lack of success in ones field of endeavor does not justify illegal actions to financially compensate oneself.

My father worked for the criminal justice system as a parole/probation officier for most of his adult life. He had seen quite a number of people who were one time offenders and career criminals as well. When asking "Why did you do it?" "Because I thought I could get away with it" was always the response of career criminals.

Unless you envoke the death penalty for all criminals they will at some point re-enter society. Therefore rehabilitation or re incarceration are the only options. With the overcrowding of prison populations expect to pay a great deal more in taxes for prisons
or expect a larger criminal element in society which doesn't fear being caught.
