I would like to know who here speaks foriegn languages fluently.
Also what is your primary language?
I am starting my two years of language in college now and would like to know if you had a hard time learning whatever new language.
If you speak more than one fluently please list them all.

Well, I can speak three. But not fluently anymore. My native tongue is english, I also know french and spanish, but I'm not so good at them anymore. Don't get much opportunity to practice!
i speak persian. I'm losing it though, it's easier for me to speak english so I do and I'm forgetting more and more persian. :(
I speak a bit of french, thats just from school. Us canadians have to take french from grade 3 till 9 then its optional.

My native tongue is American English, not to be confused with the Queen's English.
I studied Spanish in high school for 2 years, don't remember a whole lot of vocabulary, but I can listen or read and get general concepts.
I studied Japanese in college for 2 years, never was fluent, but I can read katakana easy enough. I can pronounce hiragana, but again, my vocabulary is weak, so I only remember common phrases and simple sentences. I only recognize a couple dozen kanji or so.
Learn as much as you can, any tiny bit is so useful, and you never know when you'll use it.
well i finished my oac in french (that's basically like grade 13)... i can understand fairly well, my speaking skills aren't as great...also, i guess you would say i speak french with a quebec accent because i heard france french sounds really different...
I wouldn't go so far as to say fluent, but i speak Italian fairly well (i live in Italy at the moment, and can communicate almost anything i want, which is not the same as fluency).
Native language is the Queens English and i learned Italian by listening, asking, and making an arse of myself.
An example...
I wanted to rent an aparmtment for a year, and asked in an agency. The woman smiled politely and said she didn't have any.
When i told my Italian colleague how i'd said what i wanted he laughed at me, for quite a while.
Due to an inflection in the word Anno (year) which i missed, i had asked for an apartment for one anus.
Oh! That always hurts.
I am listed in a spanish class now but I want to take something where i have to learn the whole thing. Say something like japanese or chinese, something along thoughs lines. Don,t ask me why they just seem more appealling to me.
russian and french and spanish...these are my langauges...and oh yeah, english is foreign too!
My Brother in law started Mandarin lessons. VERY hard for a western tounge. New sounds, new writing, a real challenge.
I can understand you wanting to do that. I love languages.
I used to speak French very well, and German too (not so well), but i lost those a while ago.
Languages are cool to learn. Go for it!
Also, a nations' people will respect you for trying to learn their language if ever you have cause to use it in their country. Better to stutter out a crap phrase in Chinese than to come straight out with the same in your own language.
Athlon, I speak english, live in the US. I also picked up quite a bit of spanish when I was waiting tables.

I have just finished my exam for french ( high school exam) and i preyed for the day to come! i hate speaking othjer langugages cos i lose interest very quickly. Al i speak now is english/scottish/could u reapeat that plz ( scots often cant be understood by foreigners)

How hard was it to learn Japenese?
I am really interested in it, but some things I pick up and others well dont come to me quickly.
Japenese interests me becuase I have a japenese relative and I want to learn something intirely new to me.
Learning japanese would really help me when playing imported RPG's from Japan. I know that is kinda pointless because RPG's are based so heavily on text and interaction, unlike dragonball Z/fighting games, which are just push button, non verbal games. Oh well, I just want to learn Japanese.
I am Dutch... so I speak Dutch and English...
And a few words german and french..thats about it
Me and some of my friends in high school started out own language we called "germanese" It involved the sound of german, and the ninja-like precesion of japanese sounds all roled into one (Hope this does not offend anyone, we were young and involved in a world embellished with "stand-outish" types. Anyhow, it was great, everytime we talked like that people thought we were going to attack.
