Dental work ... halcyon??? :running scared:

Oy vey ... someone hide me! <looks at G's :smoov: smiley ... gawd, that hair's so big I could hide in there> ...

I'm about to have some dental work done ... Dentist says he usually prescribes a dose of Halcyon or Ativan to take 30 minutes prior to the appointment ...

Now - Although, I don't really *like* going to the dentist ~ I don't usually freak ... I told my Dentist - thanks, but no thanks to the halcyon - just give me some nitrous and all will be right in my world ... but now ... :scared: I'm a gettin' the shakes ...

I'm not a big pill taker - I take sinus and headaches stuffs no problem, but that's about it ... I don't like taking much else ... and I don't like the thought of not really having all my senses about me (no funny comments from the cheap seats, folks ;) ) ...

Anyone have any experience with this? Taken Halcyon, Ativan, Valium or somesuch prior to a dental appt? How'd it go?

Please people - I don't want the scary went on halcyon and went homicidal stories ... just give me the facts from your own experiences, please :)

They put that topical numbing agent on my teeth and I 'bout shot straight outta the chair ...

My teeths are fine, I have never had any holes or anything, so I don't really have any problem going to the dentist.

My dentist just have a look, and says 'your teeths are great', and it is all finished and I leave with a big smile on my face, laughing at everone else.

No experience.

But if you are really stressed out by the fact of going to the dentist, I can't see anything bad about it.

Also you said you don't like not to have your senses about you, so if you are not really totally completely suicidal about going to the dentist, maybee you shouldn't take the drug.

I used to go up and down to the dentists all the time with toothaches and stuff. About 4 years ago I stopped going and I've never had one problem since. I don't even go for check ups.

They seem to create the problems rather than deal with them (or I've just got a sadistic dentist!).

So what happened to that fabled Texas grit that we've heard so much of? A little dental work gets you all bugged out? What would happen if the Lone Star state was to try to break away from the Union today? Me think that would be a short battle, probably worthy as a 'did you see this' at the end of your local news show.

she's more concerned about the drugs before the dental appointment, not the dentist.

in other words... it's all about the fact the she doesn't wanna take those drugs.

and I don't blame her...

I don't get it then - she's understandably against taking halcion (that makes sense, whoever heard of such a wacked-out thing??), but she's still up for taking multiple lungfuls of N2-Whoa, which'll surely mark the last moments of a coupla handfulls of braincells.

And I still don't understand why topical anesthetic would make you jump out of your chair - was it cold?

Going to the dentist ~ although I don't like it ~ doesn't bother me too much ...

For reasons of convenience, when I go next week, I'm getting alot of work done at one time. My dentist said alot of patients will take a single dose of Ativan/Valium/Halcyon about 30 minutes prior to appt. time to reduce anxiety, etc. (asking around different dentists ~ this seems to be a very common practice).

I'm not fond of taking drugs at all ... Allergy meds and headache meds are just about all I take. What I was wondering about was the effects of a drug like this ... what does it make you feel like when you take it, etc. I'm reluctant, but ~ with re-doing an old root canal and having two more root canals done ... the possibility of a 'hurt me, but as long as I don't remember it, it's okay' esperience is looking sort of nice ;)

I've done some reading up and though the information is enlightening, what I was hoping for was someone who's done this before and could tell me first hand ... I've read that these drugs make you a little less inhibited, talkative, etc and am curious to know if that's true. Like I said earlier ~ I don't really like not having my senses about me ...

As for the topical anesthetic ~ my teeth are very sensitive ... When she put that stuff directly on my teeth ~ it was about the equivalent of drilling right into my teeth without the benefit of a pain killer.

As for the nitrous ~ pffft ... I've had it before - doesn't bother me. :D
