I'm considering purchasing a handeld pocketpc..
The one at dell has me drooling..and scheming how to pay for it.
So..is a pocket pc a useful way to stay organized, or is it another "organizer" that requires an organized person to be uself? :D

I have a Toshiba PocketPC (got it from work), and honestly, I don't use it for much more than reading e-books on the subway and Avantgo (and the occasional game of solitare). I definately wouldn't have paid a couple of hundred dollars for one. Put the money toward a 12" tiBook instead. :D
It's worth it if you use it. I have an old Palm Vx and I rarely use it.
If I did use it though, I would me so much more organized ;)
I recenatly bought a Compaq iPAQ, and now I can't live without it. Perfect intergration with Windows and Outlook, brilliant device. Well worth it!
As much as we all hate Windows and Microsoft, if you are using Windows as your OS I recomend a Pocket PC (Windows based) as they work so well with your PC. If you buy a Palm, the intergration isn't any good, and the software is rubbish. As much as you may hate Microsoft, they make flipping good software.

So...what kind of integration do they offer?
(and can you connect to the internet without a wireless card..like through the usb cradle?)
Exactly that. You can use the internet, save the data you want in the cache and then show it to people when you are out & about.Quote:

Also, a service called AvantGo, where it downloads the latest news when you connect for you to read at a later point.
Using a Pocket PC, you get Pocket Word and Pocket Excel, smaller versions of their sisters, which use the formats of those programs, so you never even notice it came from a PDA.
Also, the pocket PC provides 4 different ways to type, where as the Palm and others only have 1. The typing system is also "minimizable" rather than on the Palm where it just wastes screen resloution because you can't get rid of it.
The Compaq has an amazing design, there is not a single problem with it, everything has been thought about, from the USB cradales ability to take it with our without the cover for the PDA, the buttons, the way you hold it, where you put the pen, how to charge it - everthing very clever.

Thanks for the insight!
Can you store/retrieve email?
Also..how does this compare to the specs of the one you have?

Once again..thanks. :)
I would have loved a Dell, but you can't get them over here in the UK :(Quote:

That has good decent specs, 64MB is plenty, that looks nice.
When you connect it up, it updates your inbox onto the PDA or from the PDA to the PC depending on which is the latest version, or you can merge them. It also holds all your contact information, caledner, tasks and notes which are all in Outlook. If you don't have Outlook XP, it comes on a disc with it.

Get on MSN...this slowness is driving me batty! :D

If you would get a pda, go for palm. Palm is the best. I never did like PocketPCs....
I am in school, and I love it. I sometimes do my homework on it while my teachers are yacking. Then I sync it to the comp, print it, and I'm done. I write my homework in it, just notes for me, and sometimes, when I'm really bored, I draw. Oh yea, and e-books rock too.
they are a waste of time to me. pdas seem more like toys, not organizers. my cell phone and some paper does the job of an organizer for me. plus, im sure if i got one i would get bored of it in a couple weeks and it would end up lying around somewhere around the house. but thats just me.
if you need help organizing yourself, or you need a new toy, i guess it is a good idea.
Give me one good reason why Palm is better than a Pocket PC.
I can think of a three good reasons why Pocket PC is better than Palm, more ways to type (4 ways) perfect intergration with Windows and Office and a colour screen.

pah, don't buy a PDA, not only are they expensive paperweights but they're about to become obsolete, maybe :)
we're starting to see phones with full colour displays and PDA functions, both GPRS and 3G, which are a much better solution than carrying around a PDA and phone. Some of the new phones you can get in england now are all about net access and email checking, scheduling etc. Most of them have built in digital cameras and proper displays, rather than browsing the web on monocolour WAP you get decent looking pages that are far more usable and java apps/games (you can even get the original 'doom' as a free download for this phone!).

I'm not sure how long it will take before GPRS phones are standard but most of the new phones sold in england are of this type and young people are embracing all this multimedia messaging instead of just text. It's definitely the way forward.
I've had/used both a pocket pc(compaq) and 3 different palms (one mine and 2 that my sister had)...Quote:

why is palm better?
1. battery with the compaq you basically had to charge it every day, and if you let the battery run out all the data went kablooey... which made it useless for longer periods away from your PC. Whereas all the palms wwe have used seemed to be SO much better in this regard.
2. integration with windows apps... Well we actually found that palm did this better! Maybe it is just the way we did it but we found that (for example) word and excell docs could be read easier AND weren't as mangled when you took them back to the PC
3. Colour/accessories, well I first had a handspring and the woman who had a desk next to me was a gadget freak! She had camera, cellphone, mp3 player... all the widgets, very cool! Plus most non-budget palms have colour
But as for whether or not to get one, some people find them useful some don't. I used to write all my emails(personal) on the tube and then send them once I got home, I also did all my invoicing and timesheets (was contracting at the time) with my palm. Now however I don't have one but want another one. My last palm took a bang when I was in Beirut in October and kinda died. But is was quite a bang!
Thanks for the input guys!
I've fairly well decided I want one. I just need to get the money. ;)
Pissant...the one I'm looking at has a battery for data protection.

Palm have at least 2 ways to enter data:
Graffiti and the pop up keyboard.
They are definately color. Low end models aren't.
Other things I love about my palm:
It is small (i can carry it in my jeans or shirt pocket).
It works -- Does everything I need. Main want contacts and appointments listed. Especially when travelling this is a godsend.
While browsing the web, writing word docs etc are neat features to show off to buddies the main thing you will use it for is contacts and appointments. Occasionally writing short notes to yourself.
I would recommend buying a palm/pda integrated phone. That way you don't have to carry 2 devices.
i'd agree, but get one with symbian on it, symbian will rule the mobile world :DQuote:

This is the only problem with palm, only one model using palm OS has a flash player, the sony clio (latest one) but the sonys are SO cool...
But what I really want is a tablet pc... and a laptop from alienware... and...
Yes it does. :)
