Is it just me or is Thank You only used in Canada

I just got back from Daytona

I spent a week there and travelled all through virginia, georgia and the carolinas.

NOT once did i hear a Thank You or a You're welcome.

I say "Thank You"

They say "Uh Huh" , "Sure" , "Yep"

this is even in customer service situations like dealing with the hotel and buying something.

No for the americans, do you guys say thank you? like when ordering food and they bring it to you.. what do you say?

I'm not kidding here... not once did anyone say thank you or your welcome back.

it's interesting that you focused on this. i'm not sure why you never heard it.

i say thank you at least ten times a day but i usually say no problem instead of you're welcome, unless it involves someone using my property or entering my house. :)

I can't remembered if anyone said "Thank You" or not but I'm sure they did.

OT : I sliced my foot open on a really sharp seashell when I was in Daytona. Should of sued someone like everyone else :D

heh a guy from my school went down there for a week, (Im in Canada) and he got stabbed in the neck and head,hes now in a coma ;(

It was a result of a bar fight, but still that's pretty extreme =\

I must be living in the politest US state then :D

People say Thank you here all the time - if I say thank you first at a shop I get a 'You're welcome' instead which is nice.

People smile back too - you dont get smiles in England :D

Yeah, I'm in DC and people are pretty cold for the most part. If you smile at them or use polite expressions, you get a nice response back. I always try to be polite in all situations. Some of the time, I get positive responses, other times I don't. You win some, you lose some. So be it. The key in DC is that you need to initiate the niceties for the most part. As said, people can be cold here.

People in the South smile and laugh too like when they are drunk and their team is winning , but this doesnt count :D

people are pretty friendly in brighton but most of them are enhancing their mood with supplements. It's a funky town.

I must say that canada is by far the most polite country I've lived in, but it can be a little odd, toronto sometimes feels like a suburb of stepford, yet people from places like saskatchewan say everyone in the city is rude!

Like everywhere the US is different depending on where you go, amongst the friendliest people I ever met were during a road trip across the states. The people of montana, south dakota, that area, were so damn friendly, and not in a scary lobotomy-induced way, but in a geniune, we're friendly people way.

unfriendliest country I've ever been in would be morocco. Friendliest costa rica, by a long way! Great place to be.

Friendliest country I've been to? Hmmm. I'd say England.
Least friendly? Hmmm. I'd say France, hands down.

i say "thank you" "your welcome" "yes sir" and "yes mam" all the time. Just the way i was raised. Of course, I'm usually ranting about how the aliens put that damn chip in my brain... but VERY politely!

I lived in and visited France on many occassions - I found it very friendly and especially if you take a trip and visit the rest of the country outside Paris, the locals are great. I would seriously consider moving back to France, I have friends there and in Belgium and many fond memories.

Of all places I've been to and lived in London would be on top of my list. I thought that most big cities are as unfriendly with people working jobs they hate and taking it out on you when you walk through the door expecting some customer service. NY proved me wrong

My vote is gonna be Australia, the people love a chat over a beer, and throw sport into the mix and you've got hours and hours of conversation.

As far as Americans not saying 'Thank-you' or 'You're Welcome', I think it may be a demographic thing dpending where you are, because I've spent time in LA and San Francisco and they say it all all the time.

Aussies don't say it either, they say "No worries" or "you're awright"!!!!!

really? That's a shame man. I'm used to being hassled in other countries, like morocco, but costa was just a dream in that regard, even in san jose people would ask us if we wanted to buy cigars or something, then when we said no, they'd amble off somewhere else. I spent several months in a beach house near santa teresa where the only tourists are surfers, my experiences with the locals there was nothing short of wonderful, todo sobre 'pura vida'!

maybe I just look too poor to hassle in costa when they're used to rich tourists :D

Shoulda clarified this more, but I had a blast over there, I actually was in Santa Teresa as well, the one in Mal Pais.
Great people and yes they are friendly, just noticed they treated certain visitors differently.
Ex: I'm filipino, so I look almost Central American. So when i walked into a shop or small mercado, there was almost always a price for me and a different price for my wife and friends whom i was travelling with (they're Aussies!) So many times my bottle of water or fruit was say $1 American, and when any of my friends would roll up to the counter they'd get charged $2.00!!! With a smile of course;)

For a while I got a good kick out of it. But gon't get me wrong, I loved it over there

Ah New York. What a town! ;) Can't wait to move there later this year.

PS: In the US, I find Chicagoans to be extremely pleasant.
