These are the rules that I pulled from one of my textbooks. They may seem obvious, but will help narrow down your search:
1) Make it so that people can pronounce it.
2) Make it so that people can remember it.
3) Make sure there can be no confusion about the spelling (your idea I think has two words. Will the url have a hyphen or not?)
4) NEVER EVER use the words: web, net, or new (at least according to my teach.)
And I second the motion that the name comes first, then the site.
basically i think this comes down to personal preference and is as unanswerable as the old "do you write the lyrics or the tune first" for musicians
it all depends on the situation and the inspiration - for my company we spent nearly as long deciding on the name as we did developing the software for the service we offer
we felt that the name was more important than any design issues
however if your site is going to be the focal point of what you do - presumably acting as a formal portfolio for potential clients - then it is obviously as important as the name if not more so
i don't think theres a formula for successful names - trying to include an X or a superscript 3 or something just 'cos others do will end up limiting your options and giving you no end of pain
I think as long as it has the name "Razor" in it, then you've got a winner. I mean, look at all the big companies: Razorfish, RazoRmedia, RazorTuna, etc. :D
Actually, you can name a company anything you want, but for the name to be worth anything, it has to have reputation behind it. I mean, "Ford" is a simple, popular name, but only because it's been around forever.
"Enron" was probably a good name back in the day, but now the name sucks.

some people might say just use your own name, i.e. ScottManning.com but you should only do this if you have an egocentric streak ;)
my trading name is HBF solutions.
my real company name is HackersBerryFinn.
quess i broke a load of rules on naming a company.
:mrpimp:
Normally I would agree, but in the web design it really doesn't matter which comes first, I truly believe that. I came up with the name of my company and designed the logo after I was finished laying out my site.Quote:

Or you could use some random name like MediaRazor since no one would trust your name. ;)Quote:

or just use your own name because you have absolutely no creative talent whatsoever and therefore no imagination so why would we employ you anyway!?Quote:

Ah ha! So it's Razor's way of letting off steam, and Scott's his whipping boy. I dunno Scott, I'd be steaming mad myself at this point. :D
Well I broke at least one of those rules, but when I started Birnam Labs it was named mostly for personal reasons -- but until I started telling the name to people I had no idea how many ways there could be of spelling Birnam!
Birnam is a Shakespearian reference. My full name is David Woods, my Mom wanted to name me Birnam when I was little to reference MacBeth, as in "When Birnam Wood do come to Dunsinane" (see my 'location' item in my post information).
My Dad vetoed it because he knew I'd get picked on as a boy living in the south: "Burn 'em Woods, huh? haw haw haw" Although there has always been a part of me that wishes they'd had the guts to give me that name -- so when I started a business that was the name I chose!
Going with the theme, my logo is based on a red spot, as in "Out! Out, damned spot!"
Yeah, but getting insulted by Razor is like a compliment. I'd hate to see how he treats people he doesn't like. ;)Quote:
