super crossover fighter v0.2 [beta test]

some people asked it, so here it is.

sorry, it's not the role of a flash game, really, but the file is in downloadable format (.zip), forgive me. note, the filesize is quite big; 1,5 mo.
i put it here for a bug testing purpose. some are already known, some not (there are surely a lot of them! ^^)
note; a preliminary AI is implemented (sometimes the opponent is crazy). well, it works but deserve to be polished a lot ^^

ok, here's the link to the file, please don't forget to take a look at the readme file, all is commented... if you have questions, feel free to ask, you are welcome. and don't hesitate to post bugs.

i used some flash 6 actionscript. so flash player 6 is required...

edit: sorry I didnt read the readme marmotte, looks awesome, havent figured it all out yet, but you've made big progress(AI, wooo!). I loved the japanese voiceovers, that sounded great.

Fospher: did you extract the contents into a folder and then run it? Make sure that the file 'CVSSNK_kim' is in a folder called '_characters'. If its not, then it didnt unzip with full file paths.

Marmotte, thats wicked ill be sure to find some bugs for ya by tonight.

First you should have chars name somewhere in the selection screen.

And I almost broke my keyboard with your game.

Main problem I have, is way too small screen for such a big download. I want to have it fullscreen or at least double the current size.

I have 1 more suggestion, make it repeat the last 5 seconds of the fight in slow motion :)

Great work as always but I think the special moves are too hard..
Or atleast there should be a practice part.

mmmhhh... the graphics/characters are taken from already known games. be sure to read the readme, the games they are coming from are mentionned there ^^

sure, there are bugs a little bit everywhere... plus i'll work the Ai, more adaptive to the current situation

of course the screens are far from finished, it is only a beta test; playablity problems, bugs, glitches etc... of course the more advance version will include the name of each character, his size, etc... don't worry ^^ i wrote in the readme file that the screens aren't finished at all. they are just here to test the code for character selection, etc...
about the screen size (304x224) it's abolutely identical to a real neo-geo game... for the html version, of course the size can be doubled easily :-) fullscreen? that would be crazy, but awfully slow i imagine...
about your last request, urmmhh ^^ that kind of replay is suited for 3D fighting games... but i see what you mean. and at the same time the camera is rolling around the characters ^^ ouch

hehe, i played the game with practiced mode here ^^
yes, the combos are super hard to produce with the keyboard. isn't there an application that allow you to play it with your keyboard on PC...? it works for me (i'm a mac user).
i may consider to add a practice mode with a key that launches a combo, eventually (like the first toshinden game), but it will be not fun at all, i imagine... :-(

:eek: Marmotte, that is amazing. It's people like you, making games like this, that make this board great.

I think what gasbag15 meant was a blank level, with no opponent, so you can practice special moves without getting beat up :D Or turn the AI off so you can practice the moves that require you to be near them.

And the Ai is good enough to beat me so far! ...but i don't have much practice with fighting games like this. ;)

ok this might be just an anomalous event, not even bug but it's worth mentioning.

1st round: I won basically by ducking and timing my moves as well as being cheap by jumping behind him whenever he gets up and doing a few multiple kicks to the face.

2nd round: He gets angry and somehow corners me. and does the blackflip kick 5 times and it sustains me in the air.

possible bug: when I throw him he sometimes goes the wrong way.

you are right, i just tested my game with a faster computer than the one i own. wow, the game is pretty hard that way ( it's a lot easier when it slows down)!!!
i'll low down it a little bit (make it more smart also). for now i just have to decrease several values and the game will be easier. but i really want to polish the AI. the enemy attacks way too often for now, in my opinion.
about a blank stage, it will be done. it was planned some time ago ^^

oh, i never tried to put 2 characters at the same time with AI. it could be fun to see them fighting "alone"...

aaah, some bug report ^^

1st round: that ducking attack is terrible! yes, i have to polish the AI more and more. this was just a first try... i'm not completely happy with it...
2st round: i realised that the character was able to perform that combo only after applying AI... it's quite deadly also ^^
the fact is, he doesn't have to charge down before launching that attack, like you have to do when playing with him. it's his official anti-air move. he hit you 5 times with it!!! ^^ his score with me was 3...
throw: mmmhhh, when 2 character are very very closed, and the action is fast (less than one or two frames), it may happen. but it doesn't ruin the gameplay, i think. anyway, i'll fix that tonight.

a bug i had: you release the direction key, but your character continues to walk...

The classic Street Fighter II Guile computer bug...:p

My comments:
The combo system is excellent, and moves not only flowed together nicely, but they also looked like combos. The characters reacted to the hits very nicely, and it really felt like a fight game.

Unfortunately, I could only get Kim's special moves off about 15% of the time. I remember getting Terry's and Xia-Fen's moves off every time I tried.

I'll have to play around more later.

ouch! the fact is, that old combo system only allowed one type of combo, and this one accept almost all. mmmmuok, i'll try to mix both techniques, thanks for your report...

maybe also you cannot launch the combos succesfully each time because of the ennemy, you are more nervous so your presses aren't as percise as if you where alone on the stage...?
i'll take a look at that, a fighting game without combos isn't a fighting game!

I can get combos off, I just can't pull special moves off...

Down, Down-Forward, Forward and Kick.. Things like that. I just couldn't get the timing down for some reason...

When I did Down, Down-Forward, Forward and Punch in the old engine, the character did the special move.

Maybe the computer I'm on is too slow, or my timing is way off...

aaaah! that may be the problem. because the game runs quite slow with my old comp, i maybe didn't let too much time for combos. i'll try to correct that, and if it's not the problem, i'll look for another solution. it has to work!

oh, WilloughbyJackson, do you still have stage mugen files?
i have myslef a LOT of mugen stages (almost all in fact), but i cannot convert them using the mugen utilities i have. the only one supposed to work with stages (mugen character maker, i think) don't launch at all, the old and new version of it... maybe you can help me with this? please contact me if it's possible, thans a lot ^^

don't forget that i'm always the most fideless of the real arcade games. so, knowing that the window size is exactely the same as a real neo-geo game, super crossover fighter runs at 60fps, like absolutely all my games. maybe it's too much, but its a pleasure to play a game as smooth as a real one ^^


note, i just let 2 computer characters fight against each other with their actual AI. that's quite excellent ^^
