Now before answering this obviously (hopefully) rhetorical question I must warn you that this question may cause you to think.
Ok, if you are looking at a gate that is infront of you are you behind it or in front of it. Think about it.
Everyone I have asked has said the opposite to me so I am posting here in hope of reassureance although it could work the opposite way. :)

Depends which side of the gate you're on. If there's a gate, I assume there is also a fence and that fence surrounds an area. If you are inside this area your are behind the gate, thus being outside the area makes you in front of the gate.

don't read too much into your answer. Questions like this are purely psuedo-psychological babble. Yeah sure, if you choose a river over a sea it means your kinder to animals or some other BS.
As for the gate, I'd say it depends where you are. Gates form part of barriers, if you're on the inside of the barrier, you're behind it. If you're outside you're infront of it.

there doesn't have to be a 'right' answer, if you standing before a gate between two enclosed fields then the right answer is purely subjective, you can't be wrong.

So you're either in front or behind. Doesn't really change anything.
from my point of view: you're behind the gate.
Everything that escapes your eyes must be behind you. If you're looking at the gate, the gate's infront of you.
Take this example: when you're in a line, everyone that is infront of you is infront of you because they're infront of your eyes. Everyone else is behind you, why? cause you can't look at them. If you can look at something, you can't be infront of it.
Hmm, I would say if you are on the side of the gate that you actually want to be on then you're in front of it - and vice versa - or maybe its OR vice versa, too much coffee - not thinking right!

Wherever the keyhole is on the gate is the front.
