presumably, early life didn't "eat" as such, they just absorbed chemicals from around them. When they evolved to a stage where they did start eating, its just like now, they didn't just eat their own kind, they ate other species. And as for dieing out, I guess they reproduced quicker than they could eat each other until they reached a point where they started to evolve further into distinct predator/prey groups.
