people know already, he actually advertised there was an easy way to make a million dollars with an idea like this....if and only if you were the first.
There even was an article in a known newspaper, the Wallstreet Journal or something similar.
The idea is that now, there are several sites like this, but only his will succeed, why? because he was the first one that had the idea. Therefore, all media that talk, write about this, will point to his site, making it even more popular. So it's a great deal for people wanting to advertise in it.
If someone does this again, it'll probably won't get noticed, because nobody will care anymore.
If you ask me, it's a great thing. It's such a simple idea, but it's the execution that makes it genius.
The Flashkit frontpage makes this for years ... kinda. :p

I seen a site similar to this a month ago, the guy had about 10% of the pixels filled, but this site! WOW thats alot of effing PIXELS..

$1 per pixel is not a lot of money for any orgainsation.
Funny thing is everyone is saying who is going to look through all of these followed by my eyes hurt. Been looking lately. That would encourage people to buy bigger pixel space: the more, the bigger, the more noticable.

10x10's the same size as a favicon, right?

Long time since I played around with 'em, I can't remember.
yup, a favicon is 16 by 16, the smallest font possible is 7*5 and our avatars are 50*50. Having a site full of ads is like a search engien, but having a site full of ads that are smaller than the average icon is just pointless.
The next step is probably making an isometric world with ads...
