I survived an explosion!

hooray for me!!

There was an explosion in chem lab today, and some chemical spilled all over my clothes. Luckily the chemical turned out to be non toxic (mild irritant) called ethyl butyrate, used in pinapple flavoring.

So for the rest of the day my lab mates and I smelled like we had put on egregious amounts of bad perfume.

Yeah I hated chem class but that is besides the point. One day we had the burners out that connect to little nozzles near the lab tables that have the gas in them...well my dumb friend didn't check the hose and it had a hole in it and let the gas go for a minute and I turned around and was like what is that smell?....and smart him was leaning over the burner about to spark it. Good thing I was across the lab. He spakred that and it was a huge flash of fire and we lost a few ceiling tiles. He is lucky that was all that was lost.

I totally would have milked that and gone home.

I used to go to the nurse once a week and tell her I had diarrhea, they can't prove anything and you get to go home :angel:

We set the science building on fire one day... wasnt our fault though, they shouldnt have had lace curtains above the gas outlets, nor should they have given 30 16 year olds boxes of matches...

I was very disappointed when we were mixing acids and bases expecting an explosion, but only to get salt water in return, cartoons have failed me.

Ha, loved those chemistry lessons. Sounds like grade 11-12 chemistry (is it?)

An explosion from an alkyl group? How in the world did you manage to do that? Wouldn't alkane's be more prone to explosions instead of alkyls? Butyrate doesn't sound familiar at all, is it a halide? Cos that would explain the non-alkane explosion since they're derived from em.

Mabey he blew it up in the 4th dimension. Did it make a tesseract or a glome?

Nope, it's been ten years, I'm blurting what to me is obvious and isn't. Alkanes = single bond, easier to break, more likely to cause an explosion, Alkyl = triple bond(?), harder to break, but...ha, likely to cause a bigger explosion.

I dont know, was a question, get off my case.

my memory of chemistry class is just my teacher telling us that we were going to witness a really exciting and highly dangerous chemical reaction. he'd set it all up and get these little test tubes of chemicals and mix them together, and it would just go *fzz*.

and that would be it.

oooh. if that was exciting to him, he needed to get out more :rolleyes:

oh and we used to have competitions to see who could keep their hand in the bunson burner flame for the longest. i was usually the winner. but the loser at the same time.
