Old Vicodin

My tooth is killing me... when I lay down the whole side of my face and sinuses hurt... needless to say I am calling the dentist in the morning.

I have about 9 or 10 old vicodin... I took a 500 mg Codene earlier, that didn't seem to do squat, an hour later I took one of these vicodin, that was about an hour and a half ago... I was thinking about taking one more just to put me out of my misery before trying to lay down. Laying down is what brings on the pain.

Anyways... I looked at this vicodin... it says 'Throw away after 6/17/04'. :yikes:

I feel like the last one I took is having some positive effects... does anyone know if taking old vicodin is hazerdous? I can't find anything online... too much vicodin spam about.

Any advice appreciated.

I'm sure that they make it at least a couple of years short of when it starts getting dangerous. PS, I call dibs on your computer.

Hey admedia, if you have an exposed root.cavity try this it works wonders ! Go to the store and get Hydrogen Peroxide, then put some in your mouth and swish it around that area, it will take down the pain IMMIDIATELLY, just make sure not to swalow any of it. Hydrogen peroxide will eat up and bubble around the infection, the taste isn't that terrible, but you might want to druink a glass of water afterwards.

Tried this before when I had a cavity, works wonders.

You know it's wierd... I am not exactly sure what is going on... I don't think it's anything exposed. I actually think I might have an infection inside a tooth or something and when I lay down it's draining inside of my face.... Hehehe sounds sick I know, but that's what it feels like.... you may be able to tell I have been here before :rolleyes:

Yeah it might sound disgusting or even odd, but it works like magic, I've been told to try it a few months ago, the guy I worked with suggested it to me and I didn't believe him at first, but it's amazing the pain was gone in literally seconds.

PS : It does not hurt AT ALL.

In my experience Ibuprofen is going to work better than either Vicodin or Codeine. In addition to both of the latter being habit-forming, Ibuprofen is geared toward reducing pain and inflammation while Vicodin and Codeine are both narcotic analgesics...just pain relievers.

Ok, so just to cover my ass...I'm not a doctor and if any advice I offer ends up causing you any kind of harm I won't be liable. :)

As for the Ibuprofen dosage, I would recommend taking 1200mg...yep, that's 6 200mg pills. Normally you don't want to exceed 800mg in a single dose, but I know from personal experience that 800 or even 1000mg won't cut it. For me it was like a wall...absolutely no relief until I took the sixth one. And then, boom...life was good. I didn't take it all at once, I went from 4 to 5, then to 6 when that had no effect. I had the dentist tell me the next day that 1200mg was definitely not something you wanted to do often...it will eat a hole through your stomach...but for 'emergency' use it was quite acceptable and I was in no danger of any ill effects.

So there ya go...you don't want to do it all the time, but Ibuprofen is going to be your best bet for killing that pain. Additionally, it doesn't look like Ibuprofen will have any kind of adverse reaction with the codeine that you've already taken. You might want to start with 800mg and work your way up just to be safe, but like I said, I didn't personally feel any relief until I went all the way up to 1200mg.

no, actually I think this old vicoden is just delayed reaction or something... started feeling quite well after posting this... over an hour after I took it.
I might have another before going to sleep, but I am feeling good enough to work a bit right now.

Take the Vics and drink a 40. That'll marinate your ass till tomorrow no problem.

The main reason behind expiration dates on drugs is for effectiveness.
The expiration date is the least amount of time that the drug keeps full potency under normal conditions.

Depending on the type of drug and the conditions the drug is kept in it may still be 100% effective as long as 10 years after the expiration date.
Pills that don't require refrigeration, like Vicoden, are the most stable especially if they're kept away from heat and sunlight.
Liquids, antibiotics and anything requiring refrigeration are the least stable.

This is important because without knowing if the drug is still 100% effective a doctor would have no idea what dosage to prescribe.

The long and the short of it is that as long as you have no liver problems or alergies to Vicoden you should be fine taking at least the original reccommended dosage on the label.
I have a high tolerance do to a life of excess so I normally double up my dosages whenever I'm prescribed vicoden even tho I have a mild alergic reaction to it. Makes me itch something fierce.

Btw, good thing you were joking about taking a whole bottle of ibuprophen. You can OD on OTC drugs too. An Ibuphrophen OD can damage the liver or cause organ failure if you have hepatitis and an aspirin OD can cause kidney damage.

As for hydrogen peroxide, there's nothing in it that affects nerves or kills pain. It's strictly for cleansing and killing germs.
If you want something topical and non-perscription go to Walgreens and get a tube of Orajel.
Other than that, take an extra vic and get some sleep. :zzz:

I thought you were refering to the Vicodin as old as a term of endearment.

It sounds like you have an infection. I had similar symptoms (pain when laying down) after having a wisdom tooth pulled. I sat around for a day thinking I would be able to fix it with pain killers before having to go to the doctor to get anti-biotics (which cleared it up in an hour or so).
