Can some one give me the jist of FP and its speed in various browsers?
I have a game runs a 45 FPS 100% all the time in FP and as soon as its in a browser the speed drops to 33 with a 35 max. (Thats both IE and FF and the FPS stays the same on all quality settings)
Any Idea's why?
How do these swf to exe programms work? I Checked the site but i was hoping to get some feedback from some people that have had experiance using them.
IE gives 100% fps if you add this line to the html file displaying it:
Without the line it runs at 5fps less. With or without the line it runs 5fps less in both IE and FF.Code:<PARAM NAME="wmode" VALUE="transparent">
Imho IE is best, as it has full compability with everything while FF has problems with alot of stuff. People always say to someone that prefer IE:
- You like IE???, are you nuts?? you like getting Spyware and such??
Well, I don't bother with them as stuff like that has never caused any problems for me, heck, I don't even use a virus program...
So.... IE is the best... imho
You lose the speed 'cause the Flash player in a browser is an ActiveX plug-in, which affects it's performance ( Have a search for a more indepth explanation, it's been done to death ).
Ironclaw from memory that transparent background hack breaks FireFox ( Keyboard reading screws up ), and so should be avoided.
When developing a game, test it every now and again as streaming within the IDE, that's not too far off the performance you'll get in a browser.

Don't understand your last line, IDE?... is there a way then to make a movie set to 30fps run at 30fps in IE without the background hack? Is that why some people use 31fps?
What about your games, do you get the speed you want?
IDE, that's the actual Flash editor.
People use 31 ( Me included ) 'cause way back ( Possibly F5 ) the mac wouldn't play back correctly at certain speeds, 31fps being one of the few it would play at roughly the same rate as the windows plug-in. Just a historical thing that's stuck.

Breaks your heart to have something so silky smooth working, and then dropping it into a bit of html only for the fps counter to drop 5 straight away ( Although it always feels like it's actually running at half the true speed, and then with 5fps taken off that ).

Mine droped by 10 FPS which is so crap. If i set the FPS to 50 is there some code i can add to make it run at 45 or even 30, it was just an idea to maby get rid of the speed reduction.
The thing with fps is that it's not a magic cure, you can't just bump it up til it's running at the speed you want. In fact running with too high a fps can actually slow down the game 'cause it's trying to do too much in too short a time.
Quite a few coders develop at 31 and then bump it up to 35 or so for the final web based version.

Hmm, yeah, I could keep my productions at 30 fps, and when they are done and ready for the net, I change the fps to 35.....
so, no matter how fast a computer are, they wont get higher fps than 25 if it's saved as 30 in IDE?
About that. I always expect to lose between 4 & 5 fps with the game just sitting there ( Not factoring in anything much happening like scrolling etc. ) on any machine.
PercyPea did post a workaround, but in the end it was found that it didn't work a 100% so it was dropped, which is a real pity ( Basically setting your fps to 120 and then using setInterval to slow it down to the speed you want ).
Not a big fan of hacks like that, best just to accept that it's never going to be as smooth in the browser.

Nope, I was saying that if you use the code in IE, you get 100% speed, if not you get -5 speed..... and without the code it runs -5 in both ie and ff.. so I'm not saying both.. but I'm saying it runs -5 in ie without the code 2 times....

The speed-up trick on my friend's Mac using FireFox has the OPPOSITE effect! With out WMODE, she was getting 25 fps, and with WMODE set to transparent, the FPS plummeted to 17/18!!!!
Yep, wmode doesn't work well for ff... only IE. that is why I say IE rules :).
Too bad so many people today use FF.
I guess I have to think of the ff users aswell then... will skip the wmode and increase my fps by 5.
or you could use php(or something else) to only show that line if your in IE :P
yeah,js would work,too for detecting the user browser and then adding the right embed code based on that.
You can easily detect the users browser like this for example:

downside of any js solution would be that it would only work if the user hasn´t disabled js (but yeah,you could also check that,too)
IronClaw im running FF and i tryed our your wmode link and it ran at 30 the hole time? Maby my FF is just stupid or somthing.
Oh well, what speed do you guys run your games at, i used to do 30 but sometimes it looks choppy so i bumped it up to 45.

You don't need to detect the browser. The OBJECT tag is used by IE and the EMBED tag is used by FireFox (unless I'm mistaken?). So you don't need js or anything. Just put the WMODE portion in the OBJECT tag, but not in the other one. BUT the problem is, IE users would get 30 fps, while FF users get 25! If you just bump the fps to 35, then IE users would get 35, but FF users 30. So it's best to just not use the WMODE trick at all, and bump your FPS to 35, so both users get 30.
So what this means is doing your editting in Flash with the game set to 30, but then before you publish, you set it to 35. Kind of annoying, but...
Gloo Pot: If I could get away with 60, I would... But for the sake of slow computers I use 30. An exception would be this small arcade game clone I'm doing. That is set to 60 so I can get the same smoothness as the original arcade game. (It's in a small window though: 240x320)
**Added Apr 5: Publishing at 35 could yield higher fps than 30, as I am now discovering...
