I thought I would post this to get some tips on what could have been done better..

I love the kind of ghostly effect with the people, it's really nice.
The top one looks like you used one of those black things to rest your camera on. I recommend getting a cheap tripod ($20?), that'll mean you can get the camera higher and where you want it!
Higher ISO will help you get brighter shots. I HATE going higher because of noise but to get certain shots you really do need to bump it up. I shoot around 400(no higher...so far) at night and have not seen anymore noise really. Even dropping your f/stop down a few stops can kick in some more light and keep all the other settings the same. But to get a larger DOF I would say go even higher then the f.5 you were shooting at. The best bet is to bump up the ISO and play around with that. At longer exposures you aren't going to get a human(or animal) to be sharp...we just natural can't be perfectly still so if you ment a better picture of the people that will be more difficult. You can try on a long exposure to blast the subject with the flash in the beginning or end of the exposure to get the shot you want as well.

Yuk. Here's a series of 6 shots I just made at various ISO settings and times. The slowest ISO is 400. It was really dark out too. Clear but no moon. The last shot is of a Planet, Jupiter probably, and I didn't use the timer to trigger it, so it blurred.

Ask The Geezer, you've got the aperture at f16! Try knocking it up to f3.5 or the highest your lens can take, it'll make quite a difference - just make sure you keep it very still...
Yeah, those were the very first night shots for me, ever. I didn't have a clue where to start. I did use a tripod though. Next time, I'm going to start at ISO 100, mirror up, f3.5, and about 6 seconds, and use the remote to trigger the shot.
If you've got a remote trigger, then try going for 30 seconds or a minute. Works great for roads, train lines or airports etc.
I was worn out after a long day last night. Tonight, I'm going to try again, this time, I have a better idea of where to start. It was also as dark as a sock inside the toe of a black boot last night, couldn't really see a thing.

Thanks for the critique.. I did use a tripod for my shots.. The first one was taken with the camera resting on the ground.. Was looking for that angle.. after posting this I realized I should have gone higher on the ISO.. Wasn't thinking when I was taking them. I got excited about what it was looking like in the screen.. I will make sure I do my homework and play with the settings more.. Me and my wife are getting more into the photography and we sometimes get excited and not play with settings.. we need 2 cameras.. lol..

Well, here's my second night of shots. Numbers 9 and 10 are basically the same shot, but I set a Custom Function for #10 that is supposed to be Noise Reduction in the camera for long shots. It seems to work, but the last several shots were out of focus. When using that Custom Function, it takes the same amount of time to write the image to memory as it did to take it. That might eat up the battery if you did a lot of that.

Yeah, this Pixelpost template isn't that great. If you go to that link, it goes to a category page. Mouse over the thumbnails and you'll see the alt text. I guess the top left one is #10. They aren't in the order I entered them for some reason. Here's a direct link to #10.
I'm interested in those old steam engines, but not enough to drive across the country to see one. When I was a kid, they were still used occasionally, here in Wisconsin as a power source, not for plowing or anything, more for running threshers and other old early 20th century junk farm equipment. They were too dangerous, IMO. Use to hear about them blowing up all the time. What would you expect, being run by a bunch of moon shine corn likker drinking farmers. ;)
But, those don't run. They are just there for show as far as I know. At least, I've never seen them run in the 5 or 6 years I been here.
If anyone knows of a better Photoblog that free and easy to install, let me know.

Nowhere near the quality of you guys, but I located this one on an almost discarded memory card that I thought had stopped working. Click for the noisy 1600x1200 version. However, still using that same ol' Canon.

Canon S230... my ol' companion. It needs replacement badly.
And that's a shot taken through my moonroof in the now-dead Jetta... which also needs replacement.
