finally found some time to surf the net!
Welcome back, how's things in Gauteng?
I wouldnt have a clue... I watch the sun rise and set from the window in my office at the moment.
But, I havent been hijacked yet this year so I suppose things are good!
How is the mother city?
he he I just remembered that your name is the same as that guy from the Smurfs cat. Welcome back!
Well my loyalty to my company has finally been rewarded by getting retrenched.:D So I'm just waiting for my passport before I leave for London.
oh (insert expletive here)!
I was contemplating doing the same thing actually... heading for the UK.
What is an average rate of pay for us over there?
Well, from what I can see someone with 2-3 years experience will get about 2000 per month. If I go over there I can afford a house in SA by paying 100 pounds a month.
PS.
If anyone from the UK is reading this and wants to offer me a job - I love you long time :D
Can you live on that over there?
Welcome back Azaraelle!
Apparently quite easily. I just want to go over for a year or 2 to get international experience and save some money.
Thanks!Quote:

how much experience is needed?
How much can you live on over there?
It all depends, whats actually happened is that the web got popular which meant a huge trend of colleges and universities jumping on the bandwagon and creating these web design courses. This meant that more and more people were graduating each year with web skills whilst the number of jobs went down. now, if you apply for a job, you can aask for 20k - 25 with that experience but there is a huge likelihood that a college leaver will do the same job for 12k just to get his foot in the door.Quote:

You need url's, experience and you have to be good!!!
You can live on 12k a year if you live with friends, more realistically, you need at least 15k to 20k anywhere outside of London (although city centres are expensive to live so think of travel and commuting), and inside London, approx 25k-30k to be comfortable.
Hope this helps :)
Thanks for the info... nice to get it from someone who is there.
The same situation has happened here. Every person you speak to at the moment is a web designer. I have moved into art direction just to keep a roof over my head.
the stupid thing is, they're asking for people like this:Quote:

Which to me, is a joke.Quote:
asp/php/cgi programmer wanted for small design agency. needs to be an expert in flash, actionscript, director, lingo.
minimum of 6 years experience, should also have knowledge of COBOL, PASCAL, Prolog, LISP and expert systems. needs to be experienced in SSADM and have their own car.
Salary 12k per annum
when I started out the job specified was - html coder needed urgently (and the pay was great)
Now you practically run the company on minimum wage!
I agree with Bruce, employers now seem to want all singing all dancing employees with a decade experience in programming every known language and they want to pay them peanuts.
but you know the saying?
you pay peanuts, you get monkeys.
Through all the crap though, some larger firms are learning from their mistakes and are upping the salaries and filtering through the blaggers, I just feel sorry for people graduating now. When I left uni, there were no web design courses, now, you have to use the web in all courses, they all contain a bit of it, its sad.
Can the people point me to a few UK based job sites? Another thing is how much does Brainbench certification count for - cause in South Africa it isn't worth the paper its printed on?
worth less than that here.
sites are:
http://www.monster.co.uk
http://www.planetrecruit.com
http://www.gojobsite.co.uk
http://www.jobserve.co.uk
Thanks Razor I'll check it out
