... their new site is 'pig dog ugly'* ??? DO you tell someone their site is pig dog ugly??? Is it your place to tell them if they don't ask for your opinion? Or do you secretly mail the 'webmaster' and trash the site through e-mail? Do you just let it go and hope you never have to visit it? Or do you post the link on an international message board and let everyone else tell them for you? ;)

It's a friend of mine ... they've started a new venture and a friend of theirs wife has offered to do it for free. The site isn't live, so I truly will not post any links ...Quote:

if the new venture has any competition in the marketplace and particularly if the competition has websites, surf them with your friend, praise up good ones, subtly sneer at bad ones, particularly if they are anything like the one being built.
Suggest better looks and colors, etc. If images are bad, say so. If colors clash, say so. etc, etc.
I'm sure you can be positive in the way you tell your friend the site sucks ;)

When I first saw the site - I e-mailed him back and said, "Wow! You're online! ... I figured you to go for more of this type design" and I inserted some clean, simple pages ... he e-mailed back and said the wife of a friend of his offered to do this for free ... I said Oh - well ... can't argue with free ...
I think he's just excited to have his new venture on the internet LOL

If they think you are coming from a more experienced viewpoint they should take your critique in stride and learn something new... if they think you are just insulting them they will probably get offended.

Or your on the right course but here are a few things I think would really polish up that site.
Actually I take that back those are things I tell strangers.
Friends are well friends. If they came to me because of a trust issue I'd lay it out. Not attack just the facts.
in a "well you know" Rome wasn't built in a day and the internet isn't as new as it used to be.
We just gave up a renewed (2nd-time-around) contract with an architechture firm - their response time (amongst other things) was shambolic - we're talkin' weeks here, just to look at a page and say 'OK'. And now, the pillocks've gone and hired some wacko firm to create a half-baked excuse for a site. (UUUUUUUUGLY).
SO whaddya say to these guys? - I'm an artist, you're an artist, so we both know your site sucks?? OK - just as long as we're clear on that.
Sure, sure - best to say nothing - oooohhhh, but I got some good lines goin' here.

that sounds like it really sucks with the architecture firm. damn, don't you hate those naive clients that don't know what's good for them.
i have had the same problems (well they were friends not clients) and they didn't know a good site from a bad site and they wanted me to make an ugly one but i wouldn't do it.
now for my advice: don't give them negative criticism, give them positive criticism. don't tell them that its bad, tell em what they could do to make it better.

You have no idea how many times, when people are checking out my demo sites, etc, I have to say 'don't tell me it's just bad, tell me why it's bad - give me a solution, not some half-baked critique line I've probably heard before. (in reference to some other work, not one of my sites, obviously:))
Someting like
"It's different"
"Um yeah"
Or
"Um..interesting"
and they should get the hint.
Or you could just say:
"It sucks!"
That works well with friends who can't take a subtle hint.
