my little web site: huge upgrade idea

i was just about to add some characters and some work-in-progress games to my little web site (you can check it in my signature if you don't know what i'm talking about)... i would like also to improve all the code, because i have done a lot of progresses since...

as my web site resides at http://www.levillage.org, i really would like to take advantage of the name "village", and change a little bit the content of my little web site.

here are my ideas:
- it would be a... village! yes ^^. you'll have the ability to enter inside houses, talk with people. i'll keep rocky as the main character, but... mmmhhh... surprise.

- the site will be game-based... not only my own games will be presented, but also your work (finished or work-in-progress and motivated projects). for example, you'll enter in the "magnetos house" (hello magnetos ^^), talk virtually with him (there will be a character in that house that represent magnetos, you'll can talk with him, and he will explain in short words which of his games are available in his house... of course you'll can play his games exactly like the "bobby" one in my current site.

...what do you think of the idea? oh, and there's no money involved, of course ^^

That would be great. Just be sure to keep it looking consistant.

A template would be agreat idea,so it´s easy to build houses with matching look.i can also support you with a levelediotr if you want to do it tilebased and need one (see my thread on this).

i'm currently changing all the graphics. it will take some time, since they are a lot more complex than the previous one... but still in the same optic...

thanks and no need to hurry,i´ve got some other things to do right now anyway,just tell me when you need it.(won´t take me long as i only have to implement your graphics :) )
i don´t know,but since i started doing them tilebased,i just don´t like art based flash coding (for 2d games) anymore.
in a tilebased world,it takes a bit longer to set up the game engine,but therefore,the design of the game itself gets somewhat easier.
collision detection is no problem anymore (whereas art based/using hittest is always jerky,unprecise and gets slow and slower the more objects you have to check) and creating vast worlds with a fitting overall look can be done in 5 minutes in a tilemapped game (with an editor).
Besides that,you wouldn´t have the pain to convert tilemaps into artbased ones by hand,so i suggest a tilemapped version,but that´s up to you,if you want to stick to artbased,i can still support you with the editor (and,before i forget: i want to have my house right at the beach :) )

NOOOOO, please can we all do a tilebased isometric pixel city! where we can all have our own houses, www.flashkitgamers.com or something. we could make the inside of the houses our own style (within reason) and someone good at pixel art could do the outisde world, to keep it all constant. :D:D:D:D

however, i've pretty sure that marmotte could come up with a much better idea!

a bit like that, but pixelated... i hate the size of the map there! you cant bloody see where your going! i forgot but we have an engine complete, eds...

the fact is, the graphics i have can be hardly converted in tiles (i mean, the exterior graphics, the interiors are a lot easier). a tile conversion of it will be a lot harder than the zelda graphics...
mmmh, you captivated me, i'll try to look at your level editor, it seems pretty interesting...
about the hitTest in my art based games, well... i only use one hitTest code for all elements on screen... also, there are elements that swap depth... of course, cows will be here ^^

now, don't think my site will be a multiplayer one, since i absolutely don't know how to do it for the moment...

my idea at the begining was not to create an interactive world, just an area where you can wander, enter houses and play games... that's because i'm still limited with online gaming and such things :-(

That certainly sounds interesting, marmotte, I am looking forward to seeing it, even more so after looking at the picture you posted... it looks somewhat mystic quest-ish to me, or am I wrong? (trying to recollect from my not-so-good-memory, lol).

And mbenney, that is a really interesting idea too, to collect games Flashkit members make that way, one might even wonder if Flashkit could offer us a space for that????

Hmm, that is too bad, as I really think it would be an interesting idea to provide a space as a sort of 'showroom' for members on here. I was not aware there was one before though. Well who knows, maybe someone will read this and reconsider....

Oh and on a total side note, magnetos, as I trust you will be reading this since you posted in this thread: I finally managed to obtain a copy of that movie you mentioned a while ago, and the scene with the cow is indeed hilarious, I loved it :)

If I recall correctly (bad memory, as I mentioned earlier), the movie is called 'kung pow' and, by the way, the rest of it is quite funny too, but the cow part is my definite favourite! :)

Do get that video if you get the chance, it is really worth it (and again thanks to magnetos for pointing me in its way...)

i just wanna let you know that i didn't draw the graphics...
this time, they are ripped from the same game as rocky: kikikaikai and kikikaikai 2, SNES (there are some zelda 3 graphic elements though, like the mail box, did you notice it ^^); so the overall graphics will fit rocky perfectly... and other characters are already playable (yes, the above screenshot is already a playable area, not finished though)

well, i guess cows are famous around here ^^

ok, since FK will not provide space for members game (i understand why they choose to do it), well it's a good idea to present them throughout my new little web site, mmmhh??? ^^

the main page will be HTML, with either the choice to enter the "game", either to go in a level editor and create your own house, with the character in it... then just push "send", and i'll recieve the mail with all the data in it... and so i can add your house configuration to my game? ^^
imagine the main page: "news on 25 november: two new houses added" ^^

well, i'm surely dreaming, since it's A LOT of work and since i'm not a god coder... :-(

Just played your Bubble Bobble game Marmotte and it was brilliant and you where right it stops at lvl 6. How long did it take you and it looks like you only used one frame in the main timeline am i right?

mmmyes, the game itself is in one frame, with areas that are attached then removed when out of the screen... on level 8 you also have some moving platforms. yes, i'm proud with the playability, the little bub is very playable in my opinion.

mmmhhh. you want to convert an easy game in flash?
try little and addictive games like pooyan (i spent hours with it on arcade), pengo, urban champion, yie are kung-fu...

ohhh, and one day i'll revive the old and incredible shinobi, arcade version! i love it!

Wouldn't it be easier to do this via PHP and MYSQL, rather than you editing the FLA everytime? Each persons room could just be one SWF with all the code in it, the database then tells that swf what needs to be in the room and the swf loads in each movieclip and positions it.

That way people could create rooms as they feel. :)

ok, i'm not able to handle PHP and MYSQL for the moment, sorry...
i just began to work with the house editor, and... well for the moment it works.

features: you can already add/remove tiles, and work with several layers (so you'll can play with depth).

i was now wondering: is it possible via a submit button to send to my e-mail the resulted array? and also some variables that handle for example input words?

if i get your personal array through e-mail, i just put it in my file and your houses configuration will be collected ^^

so, how can i do that?

your editor work sounds good,
i guess you have one variable which contains the whole map array/data,so do a search for mail(form) flas in the movies section to mail yourself that variable.
(though i´d really suggest you have a look at jeroen´s highscore php tute to check out how to directly save/load things from/into flash using php.you will have way less work that way
(you could also go for xml but there´s no such good tute/sample for it around,so..))

about my house editor, it works well although my code is absolutely non-professional, hehe

i'll look for some flash/mail examples, and also jeroen's thread about PHP it's time to learn!!!!
but learning PHP must take some time i suppose.

anyway, soon i'll have holidays and plenty of time to work on the site ^^

learning php properly will take quite some time,but with the help of jeroen and his tute/sample file,you should be able to (up)load maps within a day.
