When they 'engineered viruses', do they mean man-made viruses?
Frankly, although it's worrisome that a synthesized super bug could escape captivity, it's the natural virus mutation that is surely more cause for concern - the virus changing it's colors, beyond the confines of a laboratory, becoming 'immune' to medical treatment.
Like I heard the other day, in reference to the venom of the blue-ringed octopus - it's not trying to hurt humans, and would rarely attack, so it ends up being a nasty coincidence that the poison is one of the most deadly substances known to humans.
Could happen the same way with viruses - in their attempt to continue reproducing, DNA alterations could create a nasty little bugger that makes SARS look pretty insignificant.
Wow, I noticed that they reference Revaletions in there. If any of you are Christian and have a Bible, read that. There is some crazy stuff in there.
I prefer to take my fictional reading from other sources.Quote:

Oh yes, I'm well aware what I said could be controvertial.
And Don't Fear the Reaper (Blue Oyster Cult, for the kiddies) is a satanic prayer.

this place needs stirring up - it's a little dead. Some controversy could surely liven it up

i believe we've always had the same chance of survival, it's just that nowadays we realize more of the dangers of our world due to the help of technology and science. But come on: do you think 150 years ago the earth had no chance of receiving a lot of meteors and get destroyed? today everyone looks at that risks just because a few years ago some scientist discovered that chance. But remember, dinasours were destroyed by a big all meteor, so the chance has always been there.
What about viruses? well, there are things worse than sars: aids for example (there are some theories that it was created by the CIA, but it's more belivable that it was originated in Africa, by some kind of apes)....and what about cancer (i don't think it's a virus but a degeneration of your own cells) and like 100 years ago, the plague, etc etc etc......
The chances of surviving have always been the same.
and don't forget the general stupidity of humanity.
it can be overwhelming how stupid humans can be.
We need more cow bell! :DQuote:

Bruce Sterling's "Tomorrow Now", which just came out recently, is a pretty good collection of realistic predictions for the near future based on a lot of the advances in science being made today.
I think a lot of people agree that one of te biggest potential threats to humanity is nanotechnological research getting out of control.
we can be like they are, come on baby, don't fear the reaper, baby take my hand, don't fear the reaper, we'll be able to fly, don't fear the reaper, baby I'm goin' mad...Quote:

I think the most dangerous thing is clonning.....now that's way out of control.....don't try to play god! look at what happened to jurasic park!!!!!
The technology behind satellite TV kicks butt too, except when it rains and you lose the signal.
:(
Nobody's invented microwave signals that can defeat rain yet - or if they have, they don't use 'em 'cause they might fry you up like you were on defrost.
always a 50/50 chance...
If the moon turns to blood or whatever. that would be grosse.
and to destroy the world? someone is a little psycho.
i wouldn't want to be with a person that slaughters half of the world.

I just wondered whether you were open minded enough to read the Revelation chapter in the Bible.
Even if you are not a Christian, you may get a lot of insight from it. In my opinion. :D

Sure, I read it. I've read a lot of the Bible. I was confirmed when I was 13, and I was even a choirboy when I was a kid (but only because they gave me some pocket money to show up).Quote:

My family quit going to church when we moved to the States, as it (the Episcopalian Church) was more like God, Inc. than a spiritual, fulfilling event. After that, with all the stories about money changers being thrown out of the churches, I figured it must be all crap, as if these money grubbing pillocks didn't get slung out on the street for the reprehensible adoration of the Almighty Dollar, then the Bible must be, and still is, quite a work of fiction.
That just illustrates the corrupt world we live in. I belong to a church of about 40 people who really have a faith but dont want to go to the larger local churches because they are fed up with the irrelevance of what is spoken there.Quote:

I can understand your feelings, but everyone has a free will, including ministers who choose not to praise God, but instead praise themselves and ask for money.
I don't see how freewill can be invoked when on one hand, they are claiming to worship the Lord and spread His holy word, while the other hand is reaching into your back pocket and taking any and all of the contents.Quote:

Seems to me to be a complete and total contradiction, even beyond that, it's a complete blasphemy, using religion as the means for gaining wealth. And we're talking wealth here, not just enough to fix the church roof. Evangalism aside (it's just a joke), the purpose of religion has been lost, bastardized over the years, where finding a path of spiritual fullfillment (or leading someone back to this path) has become secondary to turnover. And, to take that one step further, if this is allowed by any all-seeing, all-wise entity and allowed to continue, why should I take the time to respect them, when they cannot repsect me enough to offer a decent Sunday morning's worship.
I realize that your group is not like this, breadlegs, but I really steams me up to think that is condoned all over the world. I've come to the conclusion that I am better off without giving my time (or money) to the church, as currently in this world, spiritual righteousness has been relegated in favour of power or respect, and there's nothing like a quantity of cash to get that respect, so I'll not be giving any of mine away to purchase any indulgence in the near future.
Consider me agnostic.
Getting away from the religious arguments for a moment and back onto the topic of this thread, the greatest threats to our survival presently are over population and destruction of natural resources. It's simply a matter of time until we out breed ourselves and need to slim the herd.Quote:

Nano-technology and engineered viruses are much the same, microscopic elements specifically designed to do a task. The real threat, as HurricanOne pointed out, is the increased selection pressures we're putting on naturally occuring viruses and bacteria. Germs grown in a lab can be developed with elements of control, germs facing an evolutionary crisis of new antibiotics and medical treatments can't be measured. Over use of antibiotics has already resulted in new strains of resistant bacteria, and bacteria have a habit of sharing genetic code with others.
And Argonauta, cancer is actually not a degredation of cells, but the rapid multiplication of non-usefull cells. It can be caused by viri, but is usually the result of mutation (as far as current medical research knows)
And yes, BOC was a dang cool band, though my personal favorite is Burnin for you.
*edit*
sorry, submitted this with out responding the the post I quoted... still a bit early for me.
Cloning is really not as bad as everyone seems to think; it's basically creating an identical twin of a living person. There's no mind control/evil implant, and the person develops their own personality and traits (well, that's a whole other debate) At present, you still need to implant the embrio into a female surrogate in order to clone anything, so it's not like the government can just set up a factory and pump these guys out of test-tubes.
All in all, it's just like natural conception without the fun of sex. The scary part will come when we discover how to genetically engineer certain traits (intelligence, strength, etc.) but that time is still a long way off.
What you are saying then is you used to beleive in God, but now, because of human failure and a corrupt world you are giving up?Quote:

You say the purpose of religion has been lost. Yes it has in our money hungry countries. But if you give up so easy, whats to stop everyone giving up.
If you are angry then you must have beleived something in the first place. The Bible does not say go to church and pay donations to the greedy. In fact in the Bible, the Church is a gathering of people who worship together, not a certain building in a certain place.
Yes we live in a corrupt world. And soon, when the day of judgement comes, the greedy will be judged.
Sorry to rant, its just a shame you lost your religion because of other peoples failures. God will not fail you if you put your trust in him.
