can anyone suggest any decent literature ?
I have just finished "the battle for berlin - anthony beevor" and I am nearly finished reading his other book "stalingrad".
Both are very interesting but a bit depressing factual assesments of battles during world war two.
I would like suggestions for some lighter reading, something with a title that doesn't rhyme with "marry rotter" please.
"Choke" or "Lullaby" by Chuck Palahnuik. Both dark humor, young male aggression, but very funny.
I've been on a John keegan kick lately.
But i'm also reading seabiscuit, its simple and fun, horses run and jockey's puke.
Foucault's Pendulum by Eco is fun to.
How about "Ferry Otter"? ;)
I recommend Farenhieght 357.
Not exactly light, but a good book. Goes quick too.

ya anything by bradbury is good :) if you want to read something crazy go with a Clockwork Orange, or for a good classic there is Great Expecttions, and of course there are the lord of the rings books. Also a great one is The Once and Future King, its about King Arthur. Oh ya i just read SeaWolf by Jack London and it was pretty good! Heart of Darkness is another good classic (tho can be tedous to read at times)

ya anything by bradbury is good :) if you want to read something crazy go with a Clockwork Orange, or for a good classic there is Great Expecttions, and of course there are the lord of the rings books. hte movie (a clockwork orange) is nothing compared to the book the first 4 chapters are so is nothing but random acts of violence. and it takes a while to learn the futuristic slang (nadsat, only 1337 ppl can speak it) ya theres some pretty gruesome stuff in there

Other light hearted yet funny favourites are Are you Dave Gorman by Dave Gorman, Round Ireland with a Fridge and Playing the Moldovians at tennis, both by Tony Hawks.
Or, theres any of Roddy Doyles early stuff.
The Commitments, The Snapper, The Van, Paddy Clarke HA HA HA are all brilliant. His later stuff got a bit deep down but worth a read if you've read the others is 'the woman who walked into doors' and 'a star called henry'.
Now get reading Steven, I'll be asking questions later.
oh, and The Dice Man by Luke Rhineheart is a light read but still makes you think, thoroughly recommended.

Haven't had a chance to pick up a book in a long while, but a few I always recommend:
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Douglas Adams
(comedy insanity, good break from heavier stuff)
American Gods - Neil Gaiman
(mytholoical based fantasy, again lighter than most)
Anything by James Clavell, and I'll second Catch 22. Beowulf is also a interesting read if you haven't alreay.
I also reccommend Palahnuik. He writes psychological thrillers, Fight Club is an example you'd know. However, Lullaby and Choke were only mediocre I think. Supposedly 'Survivor' is his best work, I am going to start reading it later this week.Quote:

Survivor was also very good, draws a lot of parallels between religion, life and society to keep your brain working more than the other 2. I'll have to re-read Choke and Lullaby now though to compare.Quote:

Still haven't read Fight Club though.
J.G. Ballard is good - "Super Cannes" is a page-turner.

Well, depends on what you like. Recently I've been on a action/suspense kick...
Michael Chriton - His two newer ones were pretty good (Prey and Airframe), but the one before airframe was so-so at best (Timeline). Another good, kind of unusual one of his I remember was Eaters of the Dead. He took the first known account of Viking/nordic culture and kind of mixed it with the Beowulf story. Not a masterpiece, but entertaining, especially if you like Beowulf.
Snow Crash - Neal Stephenson - Been out for a while, finally got around to reading it. There are an ungodly amount of reviews around for it, so I'll just leave it at "I liked it :)".
Vertical Run - Joseph R. Garber - Read this a few years ago and still one of my all time favorite suspense/thriller books. Highly recommended.
