Jessica Lynch - truth is blander than fiction

it appears that she received her injuries in a crash and would have died if it weren't for the medical aid given by those evil eyeraqis.

yep -- an evil Iraqi doctor and ambulance driver tried to take her back to the US checkpoint but they shoot at the ambulance so they had to drive back.

be careful swampy, watch out for a particular individual who will scream "anti-american" at you

Don't give the iraqis too much credit... This was a war and they certainly weren't going to play by the rules

I'm not, both sides behave less than human in any war, that's what war is about.

I am just pointing out that at the time, on Fox and on this site it was a foregone conclusion that she had been shot and bayonetted by evil eyeraqies, been tortured and mistreated and was kept as a prisoner in a wing of the hospital rather than receiving treatment in a wing of the hospital.

When I pointed out that she could just of well have been treated with compassion by the Iraqis and not tortured I was accused of all sorts of liberal minded lilly livered treason.

I could not agree more.

well, to be fair, it wasn't like she wrapped her cute little dodge neon around a telephone pole.

the humvee she was riding in entered a dust cloud and slammed into a jackknifed tractor-trailer while they were attempting to flee an ambush that outmanned and outgunned the american crew (and let's also remember these troops were the food and support guys).

The more that comes out of this war (what with the current hoo ha about Blair "sexing up" documents, Bush using flawed inteligence info etc) then the more scary the implications become. It's one thing suspecting that we're beong duped and quiet another having that proven by subsequent information.

I read an article by AP today in the international herald tribune that said:

my personal take on this whole incident is that yes it was blown all out of proportion by the govt and the media when it happened and probably deliberately so, for the media it made a good story and for the govt it was a way of raising moral and focussing attention on a positive event.

I can't blame them for doing this, I don't think it's anything that govts in war haven't done for hundreds of years. Yes it's a form of propaganda but it's not exactly unique or shocking.

I'm with swampy that it was ridiculous for people to instantly demonise the iraqis that held her and raise this woman up as a hero, but the emotions of war run high in some people and while I think it wasn't rational it was understandable.

In the end she's a survivor who seems to have received fair treatment from her captors, which as swampy pointed out, isn't much of a movie of the week.

I honestly couldnt care less about this whole thing. I just kind of ignore things like this as I'm sure these kinds of stories happen all around the world and we just don't hear about them and no-one else gets recognition for them so why should I give Jess any attention?

there have been lots of articles about how the media are wooing lynch, including CBS making a combined offer of interviews, magazines, movies, documentary, etc a nice round package.

if anything I think she's been very restrained by not having any thing signed publically at this point, hopefully she'll become a real hero by rising above all the crap.

the iraqi lawyer that told the americans where she was has already signed a $500k book deal and moved to the US.

Supposeably she's in her own room with a Guard at the door at Walter Reed Medical Center, and also it's said she doesn't remember some or most of what happened.

both of which have now been disproved. Not trying to say she wasn't abused, but how much weight can you put in the word of leaders who have now been proven to have been mistaken in their previous reports?

Not trying to belittle her capture or captivity either, but it sounds more to me like the story has been hyped way more than it merits. Listening to the descriptions of the rescue from the soldiers and from the Iraqi hospital staff is rather alarming...

And isn't that just the American way? In a country torn apart by a war led by us and years of economic sanctions, we pull out the lawyer, bring him to the states and give him half a million dollars for a story already told...

Let's be honest, though, if the viewing public was not in such a bloodthirsty mood, the spin of this girl being tortured by the enemy would not have been so readily sucked up as fuel for the fire.

Everything needs to be taken in perspective, even this, when we find out that she was not mistreated to the extent first reported. So the Iraqi's figured she was more useful, propaganda-wise, alive than dead?

So they patched her up.

And now they're the Good Samaritans?

If that's ur arguement about how much weight we should put in what they say, then the opening statement that Swampy makes about how the doctors saved her, how do we know that's true.. or if any part of the report was true.. The whole gun thing about fighting till she ran out of ammo was acknowledged later as false by the military, or at least they admitted they didn't know.

I don't really put any stock into report issued by the military before an investigation is conducted. Now that we have begun to look into the matter, I have a bit more faith that what's being reported isn't a) rushed and b) being issued in an atmosphere where controls over information have a clear advantage.

By "we" I was referring more to the American culture; our government, our companies, driven by our desires and wants. I just found it funny that the first individual Iraqi I can think of who is getting some type of direct compensation from the war (other than the boy with no arms and the playstation) is a lawyer...

Agreed. I don't want it to sound as if I think otherwise, it's just the term "lawyer" carries so much comedic potential in the states that it is sometimes the first thing I notice. This guy might actually start to reverse the negative sterotype of lawyers... bah, I guess not. :D

things can get pretty confusing in war. Heck some times you even end up shooting your own troops.

The media has screwed up reports in war, and even peace, for a long long time now.

ok i understand what u mean now.. the part i was referring too that came from the Washington Post about her being mistreated cames from the Army investigation.. or at least suppose to cause apperently the report hasn't be 'released' yet.

I tend not to believe anything that comes out from the war zone till the 'fog of war' clears up. Whether it be military or Media reports.
