Clothing Trends

I went into Pacific Sunwear yesterday, since I havent in many years, and wanted to see what was up with the latest saltene fashions all the wannabe kids are wearing nowadays.

At least 70% of the shirts in there were "grunge" effected shirts. From hurely, to volcom, roxy...all those kinda companies. Even bigger companies are doing this, like abercrombie and gap or whatever. I even went on line and some companies entire 2004 line consist of grunge shirts. The grunge effect had really blown up in the last few yeas apparently. I remember when this was the case for web too. Its kinda dying down and getting more clean cut and stylish. So do you think clothing trends will turn this way soon? Like clean cut and slick.

I normally wear plain t-shirts from gap and then relatively unbranded (ie, not deisel etc) jeans. I guess each to their own, I don't mind big hooded jumpers though :p Just don't really go in for massive logos particularly.

As far as the office goes...

Suits are definately coming back in style, the 'messy' hair look is going out. Gone are the days of casual (unless you're me). Think of it as the final nail in the dotcom coffin.

even the larger fashion houses are going that way this season. raf simons is making a killing by using old band logos (Bauhaus, Crass, Conflict etc) on his clothing and selling them at £90 a tee shirt.

I was out on saturday and saw some young fashyonista wearing one and politely pointed out that conflict were crap, he looked suitably confused.

Having been into these bands in my ill spent youth I just dug out all my old teeshirts for a fraction of the cost. I just wish I'd kept hold of all my brothers seditionaries (vivienne westwood/malcolm mclaren/sex pistols) clothes as they are now selling for £2000 a tee shirt

I tend to mix and match designer labels (fake london, maharishi, griffin laundry) with charity shop buys otherwise I tend to wear levis and teeshirts during the day.

Please, everyone and their mom has a CBGB shirt these days, none of these people have been there.

that'll be because most of the people wearing them are 11 years old.

it's like the people that say they saw the beatles at the cavern or the pistols at the 100 club. If they were all telling the truth then the bands would have had to have been playing a continous year long set while all these people filed in one door and out of the other.

OK, truth be told, buying a $20 shirt would have been the equivalent of 3 beers, and I ain't givin' up 3 beers for some crappy shirt, on any day of the week.

These people are usually always changing, of course with the trends. They take notice of the originality of others and then duplicate the same style/brands as soon as it becomes popular - but not too popular that it isn't cool any more. When too many other trendwhores wear start to wear the same thing, they must find a new trend. At the moment the punk/surf/skate thing is by far the most popular range of close followed closely by "wigga" clothes.

Wigga:

Previously known as "white homeys" these wannabe blacks live in suburbian paradise. Their mobile phones and riceburning cars are a necessity although they claim to be living in the ghetto. There fashion is typically "Wu-Tang/Eminem/can't remember brand names...damn". Anyway they are all agressive tryhard black people who start fights because they are bored.

with summer gone, I was very reluctant to hang up the sear sucker and spectator shoes.

you people are too fancy, I only shop from the 80% off rack at target.

If I ever need to go to banana republic/gap/old navy [since they are all owned by 1 company and sell the same exact clothes] to get pants or something that is absent of the company name ill go to old navy for their 15$ jeans. otherwise i order all my clothes online from companies that arent sellouts.

I have no idea what either of those acronyms mean.
And just cause I shop at the 80% off rack doesn't mean that I wear anything, it just means that I may have to wait a long time before I find anything I like.:p

actually they are different levels in terms of market. In theory cheapest is old navy, the gap mid level, then banana republic.

this i know. but they sell the same clothes w/ a diff name. magically, the more expensive they are the nicer they are.

I haven't found banana republic and old navy to be that similar.

I still stick to rather "prep casual"... button up shirts, blazers, khaki's/slacks and the what not... except when I travel or weekends... then it's t-shirt and jeans. Pertaining jeans, I tend to stick with some of the urban threads as of late... just supporting the upstarts (Indigo Red, Azzure, Akademics, Enyce - all of the calmer stuffs).

The whole suit thing... I've been doing that for too long. Barely wear suits now.

and like Jamble, I truly hate huge labels, but I like label clothing. so, stealth labelling is my thing. mostly for quality, I guess.

Known for my "ugly" shoes though.

See your point, No-Tec, but your setup is horrible.

If you don't take the time to give your point the once-over, it's easy to come away thinking that you're referring to the clothes being nicer and not the labels/brands, 'expensive' not being a word generally associated directly with the description of up-market shops. Their products, yes, the shops, no.

When people bash Banana Republic, all it says to me is "This is my way of saying I wouldn't be comfortable in clothes that would possibly make someone question my sexuality."
That, or people still think they are the safari look, which is completely gone, and has been for a few years.

I worked there for over a year, might go back over the holidays just to make a little extra money and stock up with the excellent discount you get there. Their product quality is at the best point it's been ever, I was in there a couple weeks ago for the first time in a while and the results of their having aquired a new design team in the past year are obvious. The prices have gone up somewhat, but their latest clothing is really great.


And No Tec, you are factually wrong. Their clothes don't even come from the same place. Gap and Old Navy are the type of clothing store that has people buy designs from other fashion designers, stuff that is modeled at fashion shows. Banana Republic used to do this, but they are not anymore. They have actual people working with them creating their clothing.
I really hope you don't believe that jeans at Old Navy are the same as jeans at BR.

I bought a 72dpi warfare shirt from WA007 (James Berga). Damn good quality shirt that not many people have. It's one of my favorite shirts now.

Anyhow, to answer the original post.

As far as work, I wear a tie 4 days a week and casual day on Friday. Most of what I wear is from Banana Republic and Kenneth Cole.

As far as casual clothing, Kind of prefer plain heathered t-shirts, or short sleeved colar shirts-plenty from thrift stores, which I've been shopping at since high school. have found many great pair of jeans at thrift shops than look similiar to ones you'd pay over $100 for to have that vintage/broken in look. Go to a thrift store and you can find ones someone has already broken in for you.
I guess I'll get something from just about anywhere if it's something I like. Been going to Urban Outfitters for quite a long time, and now we've got an H&M in Chicago as well, some good stuff there.
European fashion is much better than stuff being created in the US for the most part. I guess I've always leaned that way.

I've got several wool blazers, and several full length coats, good for the winter up here. Even if it's nearly below zero, you've got to keep it fashionable. Zip up turtle neck sweaters are a staple.

Oh, and I would not use Pacific Sunwear as a good measurement of what's going on in fashion. They 100% cater to everything that's trendy as far as teens are concerned. Best avoided unless you can find some good skate shoes for sale.
