Self Improvment

I have been striving recently to improve myself physicaly and mentaly. No doubt others do the same so what better way to improve than to share tips!

Here are some good ones that I've came across to get this thread started:

1. The Heimlich Manoeuvre
Get behind the chokee and wrap your arms around their wast. Make a fist adn place the thumb side against the abdomen, below the ribcage and above the nabel. Grasp your fist with your other hand and press into the abdomen with a quick upward thrust. Repeat untill food becomes unlodged.

2. How To Open A Jar
Usualy a towel will suffice however if it is still stuborn run boiling hot water over the jar then cold water, and resort to the towel again. It has to do with the difference in coefficients of expantions.

3. Expand Your Vocabulary
Ever found yourself bored with a yearning for learning? Or just bored? Read a dictionary, and study the words that you don't already know the meaning too. Or not.

1. Ever find yourself deeply bored? Bored enough to just sit there, staring into space? Quickly pinch yourself. Anywhere. Really hard. I mean REALLY hard. YOu have to trick yourself. Beat yourself before you can think about it. It stimulates the most primal parts of our brain, or our 'reptilian' brain. Works really well, if you can do it right.

2. If you have a body part that hurts, try this. Say it's your arm. Close your eyes, and imagine that your arm is filled with the color red (or any other color you would associate with pain). Take your other hand, place it at your shoulder, and slowly move it down. Imagine that you are pushing the red out of your hand. Continue, at a slow pace, until all the red is gone.

Best to do this in a quiet, dark place. Or atleast one with few distractions. It works wonders for the mini-migranes I get sometimes.

Oh, and no Fightclub references or sexual tips (save them for PM's). :D

When cleaning up the house, don't just take one thing to a place. Pick up two things.

It makes your movement doubly efficient, and gets your tidying up done that much more quickly.

if you break a lightbulb off in the socket, cut a potato in half and use it to unscrew the sharp remains....

Too much whining about personal problems on the boards lately. Go get some exercise, come back when you've got good code to show off.

Good way to shatter a glass jar; rapidly cooling an object that has been heated to a high degree can often cause cracking (or, with glass, shattering). Ancient civilizations used to build large fires at the base of rocks then dose them with cold water to crack them apart so they could be moved.

A better way is to use an ordinary rubber-kitchen glove. Provides enough friction to maximize your hand's strength.

To clean really stubborn stains in the kitchen or bathroom, make a mixture of white vinegar and cream or tartar (higher ratio of tartar to vin, so that it becomes pasty). Apply to the stain and let it absorb for a while, then scrub. Takes out most offending items.

Naaaaaaah, hit it REALLY hard in the middle off a bit of wood (old worktop or something). The lid will pop right off when you screw it, try it...

you could just push a screwdriver under the lid to stretch it slightly and release the airpressure! Lid comes off no problem. Kitchen knives are not usually strong enough!

RE: the hot and cold water. I had a friend do that, the glass exploded with boiling water in it, and burnt her quite severely.

Bi-carbonate of Soda is actually a better cleaner than cream of tartar. Mix with white vinegar to clean bathrooms, kitchens, toilets.

Sprinkle Bi-Carb on carpets mixed with dried lavender pieces and leave for 30 mins to one hour then vacuum up. Cleans and deodorises the floor.

mix a small amount of bi-carb with a little water and make a paste. Spread on the sink and stove (really bad stains) leave for 10-20 mins and remove with a scour sponge.

Making your own massage oil (one of my favs! :P) this leads into the physical activity stuff too! :P
Take extra virgin olive oil, or Almond/Macadamia Oil (100mls); 100mls of melted copha (coconut fat); melt together, add essential oils of any desire (must be essential, not fragrant!); put in container and keep in fridge. It will harden and you can use a melon scoop to make massage oil balls. drop one of these on the back of whomever you are massaging and it will touch them cold and melt with their body heat. Alternatively drop one of the balls in a hot bath for a nice body soak... :)

How to clean your house/room.

you don't need boiling water to unscrew tough jars, just hot tap water will be enough to loosen the lid, especially if its metal. Rubber glove gives that extra bit of help too.

Of course REAL men don't need such assistance.........

To open a jar, use the bottom side of a mouse pad and unscrew that way.

Its like the number 1 grabbing substance in the known universe.... ever.
