American Muscle: What Should I Get?

Alright everybody, it's time for me to ditch my SUV gas-guzzler and find myself a nice muscle car. I've narrowed down my options... any tips, comments?

96 Ford Thunderbird LX V8

I'm sort of partial to the Mustang, but I like all 3. All are priced under 10k, which is in my budget... I want something fast, powerful, and flashy. Not a fan of imports, though. Any ideas? Feel free to suggest something else, too.

Aww. Man, I thought you were going to get a real muscle car. I say, for that price range, get a perfectly restored 68 Camaro SuperSport. Or a 67 Malibu. Very fun cars. But, they would probably consume more gas than your SUV did.

Out of those three, I would go with the Camaro.

definitely. ive gotten around 12 mpg out of a suped up one.

but, the quality of the ride is well worth it. :)

I'd have to say Camaro...not a fan of Mustang's.

It's just my opinion but all those cars look so similar, just another modern boring box with a chunky engine, bleh. Get a real muscle car if you're going to get one at all, get a car with some character.

or better still try something exotic, like a fiat dino, value for money classic with the same engine as the legendary ferrari dino (take note mark).

Thing is, I probably can't afford a classic muscle car. Might be able to get the actual car, but the upkeep and maintenance would be tough...

yeeeessss....I would love to have a 70 chevelle...i saw an old lady sellling one cheap a few months ago, mint condition and one bad a@#%$%#$#$%.

I always like the Thunderbird. Has a roofline similar to a BMW 635CSi, thought that made it look a little GT.

But if you want to be stared at (for the right reasons) get the 'Stang. Want to be stared at for the wrong reasons, get the Camaro.

Did you think about a TA (sorry, wrong reasons again)? Or although you don't ilke imports, there's always the mid 90s Toyota Celica. That's a classy rice burner.

You'd be suprised. Of course, if you get something that hasn't been re-done from the 70's it's going to break down. But, if it's rebuilt and restored properly, those things can be reliable. I've seen the cars listed above in near-perfect condition for 8-10k.

And repairs are always going to be cheaper on those cars. You could probably buy a high-performance racing carb that would fit on an american V8 for a fraction of the cost of any fuel injection unit (or even a repair of such a unit).

The gas is the main killer.

And you will certainly learn a lot more about driving and maintaining your car too.

i'm with aversion...i don't think any of those cars are what i would consider 'muscle cars'. you need something that is older than you at minimum, and something that is older than me at best.

the mustang for newer hands down. thunderbird only for nascar. the camarro is nice but the doors are fiberglass and the fenders are rubber. the mustang body is all metal. besides the power, there are many aftermarket parts available to customize. and when you got the hammer down at 110 mph an all metal body is a little more assuring. if you want to go older late 60's are the true muscle cars. but watch the mid 70's cars that is when people started buying the imports and american companies started trying new things to keep up. unless you like experiments and working on your car.

out of those three I would take the thunderbird without a doubt. You have a v8, as apposed to a v6 (gas milleage probably won't be that different). You also get a IRS with the thunderbird if i'm not mistaken.

DigitalOne: I am sort of ill at you refering to a v6 mustang and v6 camaro as muscle cars.

I own a '00 z28.. believe it or not these newer '98 or newer z28's and trans ams.. get 25mpg or better.

i currently get about 27mpg!! out of my v8 camaro. i picked up the car used.. '00 dark blue z28 w/ 30k miles on the clock. for $13,900

the car has the same motor as the corvettes.. it dynoed 324 horespower at the wheels bone stock. That means 360hp @ the crank roughly.

I have spent $1,200 in bolt on modifications and a 'baby' cam.. the stock cam out of a '02 z06.. now the car is at 420 horsepower.. 371 at the wheels. (drive train loss)

buy those extra two cylinders.. they are worth the fun they envoke :mrpimp:

the 5 liter v8's often weight just 50 to 100 pounds more than the honda vtecs and the like that don't deliver the same amount of hp(stock) and certainly do not deliver the same value.

I beat every rice rocket I ever raced in every distance (short as well). They make up for their weight with much greater torque than the little toys. I even ousted a brand new Porsche 911... until we hit the curves! :D

my mate I'm livin with worked over in America and has a green mustang v8 and he hated it he was tellin me all about it he's got a sierra cosworth 2.0 turbo and is far quicker than anytihng he drove in his time over there.

I'm just goin by what I've heard, but I do love the wee cars ;)

My best friend has a thunderbird, 94 I believe, and it sucks. It's in great shape, but it just isn't a good car. And the mustang will get you chicks, you cant compare the too.
